Vernique had been staying with Solver in the main building more and more lately, because Svalin watched them like a weary hawk when they weren't, and the quiet between them was... too much. But Vernique couldn't start the conversation that hung unsaid between them. It hurt too much.
She avoided some of the others, too. Not Marlow, to whom she'd always be grateful, or Kael, who'd tried to make amends. But Aridis... who'd laughed at some in-joke while Solver was in Klatu-barada-niktoheim, and Aslief... whose cold voice she could still hear dismissing her panic. Even Hal, dear Hal, could never understand why she hurt like this.

So she stays in the house except when Solver needs his sunlight. And more and more, they stay in the nursery. But right now, they've ventured to the kitchen. She fixed Solver a sippie-cup.

Asleif was already in the kitchen, enjoying a grapefruit. She looked up when she heard Vernique enter, but did not say anything, and resumed her eating.

Vernique managed a nod, though she tensed just looking at her. She'd never had a problem with Aslief before. Dark, Mysterious, whatever, she'd made more sense than some of the family. Now, when Aslief's attitude was just the icing on the Cake of Unsaid Things between Vernique and Svalin... she got a nod. It was the best she could do.

"Juice outside?" Solver asks. He's getting so good with words, so quick. His father's side.

"Not right now, sweetie," she says, a strain in her voice. Svalin would insist on coming outside, too, and Vernique just couldn't face her right now.

She'd thought she'd known what she was getting into when she agreed to marry Svalin. But she'd never expected to end up hurting this much.

Her sister's mortal wife was moodier than usual, even for a mortal. Asleif did not have it in her, exactly, to wonder just what troubled her so.

Still. She was working on being slightly less rude to mortals. There were, after all, a handful she liked. And Vernique's spirit at times did impress her. Not that she would admit as such.

"He grows quickly," she said instead.

"Yeah, he does. One next month, and he's already ahead of most one-year-olds in a lot of things." Vernique says it conversationally between sips, but she doesn't quite look at Aslief. She keeps her eyes on Solver.

"I do not recall mine younger siblings growing so quickly," Asleif said. "Though I doth confess, I paid little attention to their rearing."

Vernique's teeth set. "Shocking," she mutters. "Well, Solver's a few other things besides being a god, you know." Thank Goodness. It was something to cling to.

...She was going to have to be civil enough to ask. Curses.

"You seem... agitated, Vernique," she said, after a moment.

Vernique blinks. "...Yes. Yes, I am agitated. I've been agitated all week. You may recall what happened the week before? With the illusions and Malekith kidnapping Solver and passing him off to fire demons?"

How could she act like there was anything weird about being agitated? Again?

And Vernique stares at her as she steps closer. Much closer. "...How? How do you shut the storybook just because there was a victory and a big party? Okay, maybe you had to say and do the things you said and did because of the circumstances, but how can you just shrug them off like none of it happened? How does it not get to you?" Her voice gets a little hoarser as she moves on.

"Tis how the fates were written," Asleif said, annoyance creeping into her voice, both at the presumptions and just how wrong she believed Vernique was. But now she annoyed.

"Thou art being entirely too mortal about the whole thing."

Fortunately, Solver was looking away, engrossed in his juice and the play of light on the kitchen window.

Because as much as it was not Vernique's style to haul off and punch her sister-in-law in the face, it would have been even less so to do while her son was watching.

But there it was, the tiny fist slamming with a crunch into Aslief's jaw. The fractures, of course, would be Vernique's, but the pain doesn't make her scream, just snarl more as she speaks.

"You're damn right I'm mortal. And I'm staying 100-percent mortal! Solver needs somebody who doesn't think that people, even family, are window dressing in the big divine drama!"

The blow was still surprising enough to knock Asleif out of her chair and onto the floor, the crack of it enough to hurt her some.

Her eyes were dark as she got back on her feet, the kitchen suddenly feeling like a storm front was moving in. "Thou hast made a grave error."

A bolt of power rested in Asleif's hand, but the comment struck her just as sharply as a blow might have. She had not expected this. Did not know how to properly respond.

She lowered her hand. "I should.... take mine leave of thee."

Svalin had been on her way to the kitchen after a training session when she heard yelling. She drew her sword and ran toward the disturbance.

She reached the doorway just in time to see her wife and sister arguing and hear her wife say that marrying her was a mistake. Vigfrior fell out of her hand and clattered loudly when it hit the floor.

The yelling was done and her wife and son were fine. A part of her was relived, but her stomach knotted up at her wife's words. The second thought that went through her brain was to get out of there.

Svalin turned and left, but she didn't run.

Vernique sees her, and didn't think her heart could sink further, but finds she was wrong.

"Svalin..." With her good arm, she scoops up a now-agitated Solver and follows after her.

Svalin put Solver on her right hip and took her wife's hand with her left, the flesh and blood one. Svalin could feel the magic flowing and healing her wife's hand.

"Asgardian faces art most hard, milady," she said. "Mine sister's no exception, but I art certain she didst deserve it."

Vernique winced slightly from the initial pain of moving her hand, then it was gradually relieved. "...Thanks for assuming that, at least," Vernique says weakly. "I don't think I could take look like I've lost my mind."

A long breath. "I love you, you know. I do. The whole thing wouldn't hurt quite as much if I didn't."

"There art times when I hath wanted to do the same," Svalin said.

Svalin nodded. "I know. I love thee and Solver with all mine heart. Please do not mistake mine inaction in searching for Solver for not caring. I wanted nothing more than to go with thee and wast mightily torn between thee and mine duty to Asgard."

"Okay, I... I know. But I can't follow that script, hon. I can't. I try to understand how your family does, but I don't. I try, but I'm always going to run off and act like a mortal, and sometimes I'll still be messed up after Victory Is Won and everyone's taken their bows."

"I ne'er expected thee to follow the script or asked thee to."

Svalin took a deep breath.

"It ist not always easy to follow e'en for those who art born and raised knowing that our path is set before us. Duty and the heart oft conflict and what must be done and what one wants to do art not the same."

"Mine heart ached with e'ery beat that I couldst not protect thee and Solver and go with thee to find him. I wanted nothing more than to follow mine heart, but I had a duty to mine people. I couldst not e'en go and help rescue mine parents and I love them as much as I do thee and Solver. I art the eldest and the duty and responsibility to mine people art mine and not something to be passed to someone else. I art the heir presumptive, not mine siblings."

"I cannot expect thee to understand or e'en accept it, but ask that thee hath some patience. I may not be able to act immediately, but I always care, feel and worry. E'en when I cannot allow mineself to show it."

Another deep breath.

"I do love thee and thou'rt one of the most important people in the Nine Worlds, but if thou feel thou must end this, I wilt understand." Mostly. Maybe in time.

"I know you didn't say it, but it was starting to feel like it. When nobody said anything but dismissiveness or jokes when I needed real explanations. When everyone else seemed like once the threat was over everything should be back to normal immediately...and you didn't say anything... I just..." Vernique listened, and shook her head at the end. "I don't want a divorce. I could never lose Solver, and I'd never want to take him away from you. I said that to Aslief because I was going crazy. I'm sorry.
And I know that you've been trying to do the warrior thing and have our backs, but your being so close all the time when we couldn't manage to talk was doing a number on me." Vernique took a breath, and clutched Svalin's left hand with her now-healed one. "We'll just keep trying, okay? Sometimes this is really, really going to suck but we'll make it work."

Asleif had... withdrawn (not retreated, because she was not afraid of confrontation with the mortal) to the library.

Peaceful enough there. And perhaps her sister would make amends with her wife. Stubborn, duty-focused, emotionally repressed goddess that she may have been.
