Family Demon Hunting Road Trips!
Bumping along a dirt road in  what, to any sane person, was probably the most outlandish and least safe car ever, Martin looks out the window at all the wheat fields. Now surely somewhere in there was a demon. There had to be! The detector in the car said so! Granted, at the last stop it had lead them to the ghost of some old lady that was very dull, and her dog which had just been noisy, but still...it should work eventually. He needed to tell Marlow how much he liked this car again. Charmed to the brim meant: bonus! He could touch stuff. And hey, that was a rare thing with him.

Anyway, they were better than the Ghostbusters. You had to call those guys. Nobody had called them!

The Great Demon Hunting Road Trip continues!

Martin blinks in surprise and looks around to be sure.

So...I'm the youngest in the whole place?

Granted, he was usually the youngest in most situations but to be the youngest in the whole town? This was only getting weirder.

Perfect.

I so bet there's demons. Or at least magic.

He can barely stop from bouncing on his feet and shoots Marlow an excited grin. Perhaps someone with an actual sense of danger might be nervous, but it wasn't like he had much of one.

There's magic all right. She spotted an empty park bench and motioned Martin over to sit and watch the crowd. Flopping down on it, she saw another rune etched in the wooden seat.

Look, there's another one. I wonder what would happen if we gave it a little push.

Only one way to find out...

And without further ado he gives the rune a firm tap with his hat. Sense of danger? What was that?

WAIT! Marlow's caution was loud enough to be heard outside their heads, but too late to keep Martin from activating the rune. Dark light shot out from it, then engulfed the bench. It spread down to the ground and then across the grass to encompass the entire square.

She jumped up and away from bench. "I said a /little/ push!"

They now had the open and unwavering attention of everyone present.

"I didn't push it that hard!" Because really, he thought, how hard could you push something using a hat?

Then he notices the countless staring eyes. Oops.

A hat in the hands of crazy strong magic!

Marlow blinked back at the crowd. Did they all seem...bigger?

"I think we found our demon," she said softly. "I think we found them all."

Okay well not like he always took that into account. Still, innocent enough tap he'd insist.

Really, at the start of this he'd thought, best case scenario, that maybe they'd find a large demon. Or a handful of somewhat smaller ones. Really he wasn't too picky.

But at the crowd in front of them he can only stare in shock for a moment before whispering back. "...Apparently we're better at that than we thought..."

One by one, the normal faces began to change, revealing demonic ones.

"The DPS worked!" She probably shouldn't be so elated at her success in the face of the downside of DPS. It found a whole town of demons. They might not live through it.

The crowd didn't just move toward them. It surged in their direction.

"Nice! " The victorious fist pump and jump that follows only indicates that his sense of danger? Nope, hasn't kicked in yet. Perhaps later.

"It worked it worked it worked! You're a genius Marlow!" He was completely ignoring the fact that a slight flutter in the gauge meant a demon town. But those were details. There was demon hunting to be done!

And he had so many spells to try.

"And this is why we should've brought a camera," he says as he feels his hands crackle with magic from all the excitement of their search being successful. Now which spell first...

Sense of danger? That was what you felt for other people when they were about to cross you in a bad way. Marlow was lacking it as well.

"Watch this one!" she yelled excitedly and conjured a long sword of green light. It eerily resembled a famous sword from a galaxy far, far away. "It really does cut things, too!"

"That's so cool! You have to show me how to do it later!" With the way they were excitedly conversing you'd think there wasn't a town of demons surging towards them.

"Oh! I wanted to try that demon fire spell I didn't get right against the cyborg pirate dinosaur, it kinda blew him up and ruined some of the windows. But they needed to fix those anyway so it wasn't so bad," he explains as he hops on one of his flying discs. "I asked if he had any dino friends that would make good pets, cause these ones can talk, for you but he didn't tell me. Which isn't very nice."

Martin claps his hands in excitement and gives Marlow a thumbs up before he starts on prepping the spell.

"Demon fire?! Shoot some at my sword when you get it going! Maybe we can light it up even more!" Oh yeah, Dr. Strange would be giving them looks right about...oh, a day ago. New generation of magical defenders, Doc. It had to happen.

Although, it could've happened to a more aware duo.

Marlow happily began slashing and thrusting her sword at the demons approaching like she remembered Svalin doing in practice. She'd worked hard at sword play with the Asgardian, it was only right to practice with the demons.

The demons were a little confused at their guests' behavior. They advanced and circled, but had yet to really jump at them.

Oooh good idea. Stick your sword out once I get it going. Ummm you might want to throw up a protection spell around you or something in case I mess it up again. But really I've been practicing!

He'd tell Dr. Strange about this after, because then Martin wanted him to be impressed about how they took out a town of demons. It might distract from the lack of self-preservation instincts going on here. Oh and the experimental spell use, but really, how else was he to learn to use new stuff?

The confused demons gave Martin time to go through most of the incantation for the spell undisturbed, although the ball of demon fire that'd began to form in the middle of the impromptu circle might confuse them more. He grinned down at Marlow from his floating blue perch up high, eyes glowing bright blue, to check if he could start. So far the spell was going alright and the potential of a flaming lightsaber was great motivation.

Okay! Remembering to think what she wanted to say was hard now that they were getting some real action. She wanted to keep yelling out loud but Martin was right, whether he realized it or not. Why give the demons a fair shake? They already outnumbered them, what more could they want?

Her protection shield shimmered into view, that pretty pink glimmer she hated. No amount of spell work would turn it green like she wanted. With her shield in place, she held up the sword like She-Ra. HIT ME!

He hadn't realized that when he'd done it, in fact he'd only started with the telepathy because he didn't want to screw up the incantation by talking out loud. That once really screwed one up when he'd said something in the middle of one. Nope, he'd learnt his lesson from that.

The gigantic grin on his face that forms once the incantation comes to a close could scare even a few of those demons. That was not the grin people were supposed to have when faced with a hoard of them. Martin was having a tad too much fun. Well, he'd have fun anyway but having someone who was equally excited by this sort of thing, and also lacked whatever it was that made 'sensible' people so grouchy, made it even more fun. Couldn't those grouchy people enjoy a good demon bashing? Sheesh.

The ball of demon fire, now as tall as Marlow herself, slowly lowered itself to the shocked looks of many watching demons. As if to make things more dramatic, the sky had darkened, making the flaming ball glow brighter as it was speared by Marlow's sword.

Demon Hunting is a GO!

With that telepathic declaration the ball of fire spins rapidly on her sword and at once begins shooting fireballs out which dive into the throngs of demons.

Too bad they didn't have theme music.

Theme music would have been so cool! They'd talk about it later. The car could easily be spelled to play it through the speakers when they needed it.

The demons were getting over their shock. Those that were brave enough to stand against the fireballs through their midst surged forward to attack, only to be repelled when Marlow swung the sword around.

She laughed out loud. I need the incantation for your demon fire! I'll trade my sword spell for it!

He'd love that, especially considering he was almost singing his own thumping theme music now. There had to be good demon hunting soundtracks somewhere.

Deal! I so want to try that sword!

A cool lightsaber he could actually touch and slay demons with? Sign him up for a premium membership.

From his perch up on the levitating disc, Martin sends more discs down to come crashing down onto the hoard, trying the squish the demons like bugs. But they're a sturdy lot and there are an awful lot of demons. That doesn't deter the young mage from sending rounds of raining magic shields down.

Now for his next magic trick...what would it be? Unleashing a bit and going for a large area time freeze? Perhaps he'd save that for later. Or maybe that not-yet-tested gravity one. Really, all his experimental spells were the type that needed power more than control. Right up his alley.

The combination of their two spells made for a spectacular display. Marlow's attention was off the demons and on to what the sky was doing above her. Up to now the demons weren't real in the dangerous sense. They were a little like a live version of some arcane video game.

The demons had been avoiding, running, ducking and otherwise trying to stay out of the way of their efforts, but at last they acted as one mind and turned to attack.

Uh...Martin? I think they just figured out something...

After unleashing a bit and using larger spells, he often found it was harder to reign the magic in after, and today was no different. His eyes still glowing that bright blue, and licks of magic leaking out of them, Martin turns to look at what she's seeing.

...Uh oh. That might be a bit of a problem...

Which was quite the understatement at the moment.

I think..now would be a good time to run.

Marlow's sword disappeared and she threw a handful of red crystals at the oncoming demon horde. More were magicked into their midst. Slow she might've been when it came to realizing they were in trouble, but she was quick to start offensive spells.

The demons drew back, then flung themselves forward.

Three illusion Marlows took off in different directions.

Martin is about to teleport them both out of town when he finds that he...can't. Something about the town wasn't letting him since the runes had been activated. This was a problem.

He has half a mind to take off some of the limiting spells on his gloves that'd he'd been told were to only be removed in extreme situations. But it was hard to do that with a horde of demons after you. So instead he sits backwards on his magic disc as it zooms in the direction of one of the illusion Marlows and begins not caring much about fully controlling his magic. Wave after wave of magic discs are sent smashing into the demons as he goes, try to get a spare moment to regroup.

I don't think they're going to give us a minute to regroup and unleash a little. And I can't teleport out of town for some reason...

This was a bit of an issue now...

Time to get serious. Marlow's illusions continued to distract and divide the demons' attention.

She stopped in the center and began a fast chant for the spell for the Seven Suns of Cinnibus. She used her energy sword to focus and direct the all consuming brilliance of the energy blast. When in the dark, turn on a light, Martin. Shield yourself really good because we're going to lay waste or at least send up a flare for help.

The spell flowed up her hands to the tip of the blade. The night exploded.

At the warning, one of his discs wraps itself around him to make a bubble with the characteristic seal found on all his discs. Ready. Heads up, I'm going to take off the top limiting spell on these gloves.

He sees his opportunity at Marlow's spell, and places one gloved hand over the other, preparing to unravel the top spell. He'd only been taught how to take this one off, and had sat through a long lecture about how it should only be done in dire circumstances. Well, angry hoard of demons after them certainly counted.

Marlow's spell exploding was the equivalent of a magic shockwave. But if any potential help thought that was an isolated accident, the next large magic flare up shortly after would have erased that idea.

The usual sparks or wisps of blue magic that came from Martin's gloves were now replaced with what seemed like a constant leaking of magic. It wasn't just his hands, which now twitched in an odd manner, his eyes glowed brighter and magic seemed to be escaping from them too.

Time for Round 2 demons!

The smell of ozone in the air after the spell released invigorated Marlow. She loved the full blown release of magic. It made every cell in her body tingle. Even when the top of her head felt like it was blown off with Martin's spell atop hers.

The demons had disappeared. The ones that weren't scorch marks on the ground had retreated back into the shadows. No doubt they were plotting again to do something about their visitors, but for the moment the two sorcerers were alone in the town square.

"WOOHOO!" she shouted into the eerie quiet at Martin hovering overhead. Her energy sword winked out as she began jumping up and down in victory. "That was so awesome and nobody else saw it! Why isn't there ever anybody around to see the really great stuff?!"

"No fair! They left just as I was about to get serious! Come on demons! Round 2! Fight fair!" He shakes a flaming blue fist at the shadows in annoyance.

But he had to agree with Marlow. They had been pretty awesome there. "I know!" He lets his head hang upside down off the edge of his disc to look down at her. "Why don't people videotape this? So we can show them how awesome we were!" Martin stops and realizes something. "And we have no pictures of any of this!"

"WE WOULD IF SOME DEMONS WEREN'T COWARDS AND WOULD COME FIGHT. THEN WE'D HAVE GREAT VIDEO TOO!" He shouts at the retreated demons, demanding they come back. He so rarely released the limiting spell on his gloves, and the overwhelming feeling of his body not only brimming with magic, but literally overflowing with it, had him on an excited and active buzz that just wouldn't go away until he got to let it all out a little.
