Family Demon Hunting Road Trips!
Bumping along a dirt road in  what, to any sane person, was probably the most outlandish and least safe car ever, Martin looks out the window at all the wheat fields. Now surely somewhere in there was a demon. There had to be! The detector in the car said so! Granted, at the last stop it had lead them to the ghost of some old lady that was very dull, and her dog which had just been noisy, but still...it should work eventually. He needed to tell Marlow how much he liked this car again. Charmed to the brim meant: bonus! He could touch stuff. And hey, that was a rare thing with him.

Anyway, they were better than the Ghostbusters. You had to call those guys. Nobody had called them!

The Great Demon Hunting Road Trip continues!

It didn't count. The car's personality was disturbingly close to the Defenders' house mother.

"I was practicing dimensional travel spells and it was like the eighth or ninth one I found. I thought it would be a nice place to stash a few bad guys if I couldn't get them to behave. When I got the car and started spell work on it, it seemed like a great anti-theft alarm. Then I had to dial back the settings so it wouldn't send car thieves there. They have to make a living, too, but not with my car. I tied it to the DPS spell so only the evilly bad guys go to the vampire clown dimension."

Well he'd tried. Car personalities had to be taken into account.

"That's real smart," he says looking rather impressed. "I wanna try that on something now. But what..." He continues musing for a moment until he sees the welcome sign in the distance and visibly perks up.

Marlow brushed aside the map to see out the window at the sign. "Thank goodness! We can get food and see why the car wanted to go to Fearnowville." She peered at the gauges in front of her. The DPS gauge, the one where a gas gauge would normally be, was starting to flutter. "There must be something here. It's hinting at something."

The car continued along until they got to the welcome sign. Once they crossed into the town limits, Marlow felt her ears pop. She tugged on one ear lobe in response. "See any place that looks good?"

"Really?!" He practically jumps to see the DPS and check for himself. "Yes! Demons beware!"

At the city limits Martin swallows on reflex to unpop his ears and notes that it was somewhat odd. They weren't even going uphill. But his excitement has him put that aside in favour for looking for demons and food. In that order. "Um that place down the street looks like one of those holes in the wall. Or maybe a mom and pop. Or both! Wouldn't that make the food doubly good then?" It seemed logical.

"I hope so!"

She steered the car in that direction and parked nearby. The car did most of the hard work. With a sigh, she leaned back in the seat. The car seemed to sigh with her. Turning it off was unthinkable and impossible. The key was just for show, the car would doze in neutral until it was needed.

She tugged on her earlobe one more time to shake off the popping sensation. "Let's go. Watch out for demons. They might bite ankles or something."

Getting out of the car, he briefly glances back at it, expecting it to turn off because that's what cars did. When it doesn't he shrugs and follows after Marlow inside. "Can I have a double cheeseburger Marlow?"

With a side of demons hopefully.

Can't stop the magic, Martin!

"You can have anything you want. We have lots of money. Extra fries...too..." Every eye in the place was fixed on them when they entered. Nobody seemed friendly, or unfriendly. But nobody smiled, either.

The first to recover was the waitress. She finished pouring a glass of something dark and straightened up. "Just the two of you? There's an open booth by the window."

He almost beams when he hears he can have anything. "You're the best." This was much better than travelling with other people who might have odd ideas involving healthy food.

There's a slight frown from Martin at all the staring but he doesn't seem otherwise bothered or surprised by it. Between his gloves and always there lucky hat, not to mention how he always came across as young regardless of how he looked, Martin was used to staring. And usually the odd looks only became more frequent when he had to avoid touching things.

"I'd like to sit by the window," he tells Marlow who was after all, the 'adult' here.

Healthy food? They were on a road trip! Healthy food is what the professional chef team at the compound served.

The looks were a little more daunting. Unlike Martin, she wasn't used to being the person others stared at. She paled greatly next to her teammates until she began whipping up destructive and dangerous spells.

She summoned a smile for the waitress. "Thanks, we'll take the window seat. It's a very nice town. It'll be fun to watch people go by while we eat." Leading the way to the table, she took one side and sat down. She handed one of the menus tucked behind the napkin holder to Martin.

"Maybe they make pies too. Apple pie is supposed to be good in little towns."

He cheerfully sits down but the smile fades as Marlow sets the menu in front of him. Glancing around he thinks they're getting enough stares already which wouldn't help if he used telekinesis to flip through the menu. Besides, these weren't city people used to weird things. So he opts for using the edge of his hat to flip the pages so he doesn't need to touch things yet.

Although that might be a problem when it comes to eating.

"I want one then. And a double cheeseburger with curly fries."

Marlow reached over to flip the page for him and point out the beverage selections. In the car, Martin didn't need to worry and she forgot that when they were out of it. She needed to take better care of him.

"Strawberry lemonade sounds good. I don't think their idea of tea would be our idea."

Martin shoots her a shy smile as a thank you. It was nice being around someone who he didn't need to explain the dangers of magical accidents and their Russian roulette-like results.

"Probably not," he agrees then perks back up when he sees the milkshake selection. Other than the fact they were delicious, they always came with straws. Always. And that was a big help.

People are weird here, they're staring more than normal...

At least minor telepathy gave them some privacy.

Yeah. Don't let them get to you. We'll eat, look around a little for some demons, and go if we don't find any.

Marlow was used to be stared at because of the Defenders, though she didn't get this kind of attention from anyone but the nearby coven. They only wanted her to join their group. These people looked...well, they looked hungry. And oddly relieved.

But it was a diner, and there was food service. Hungry should be normal here.

The letters across the top of the menu she turned for Martin caught her attention. Her reading skills were improving thanks to Sydney, but they didn't look like normal writing from this angle. She tilted her head to get a closer look.

Do those look like runes to you...?"

He nods briefly in agreement and let's his eyes sweep across the room once more. Staring he was used to but this was...different. People were usually more discreet about it. They hadn't even done anything weird to get this level. Sure the car was outlandish but then they should be staring at the car, not at them. And not so...openly. It felt off.

At the mention of runes Martin looks back at the menu. He'd always been an avid reader, he even spent his free time reading spellbooks. Ever since the whole magic mutation and studying under Dr. Strange, he'd picked up Latin along with bits and pieces of other stuff. And this writing was certainly not English. He really needed to brush up on runes.

Yeah...but why here and on a menu?

Discretely as possible, he directs the menu to spin to face Marlow. Hopefully to the onlookers it looked like Marlow had done it with her hand and nothing weird was involved.

I don't know. See, looking at it the right way, it looks like a decoration, but when you look at it the wrong way... Latin she had, even if she didn't use it much. It was Just Done to learn the nuances of magical writings. Runes were much worse as they could have several different meanings and only made sense as a whole. And depending on who wrote them.

"You kids just got here?"

The surprisingly harsh tone from the waitress jerked Marlow's attention from the menu. She put on her most inane smile, the one she wore when someone lectured her.

"We did. We're taking a trip around the country for the summer and thought your town looked like a great place for some hamburgers."

"You drove in?" the waitress persisted. "No trouble on the road?"

"None at all. The roads are in great condition around here. We'd love a couple of cheeseburgers with extra fries
I'd love some strawberry lemonade. My brother likes milkshakes. What kind do you have today?"

"Whatever kind you want," the waitress answered, still staring. "Big party tonight for the town. You two should stay and see it. Got a nice B&B around the block."

He's in the middle of squinting at the runes and trying to remember the meanings of one of them, and mentally grumbling about it because this would be way easier in Latin, when the waitress breaks his concentration. Following Marlow's lead, he puts on the more airy version of his excited smile and nods where appropriate.

"Oreo," he pipes up during his cue. Because it was on the menu and those were hard to find for some reason. At least every place he'd been to.

At the mention of a party, Martin lets Marlow deal with the invitation. On one hand, this place was odd and runes along with staring locals would set off warning bells for any normal person. But on the other hand..they weren't normal and they were looking for demons. And weird things were always a good sign in demon hunting.

She was as curious at Martin, and the car did say there was demonic activity nearby. Surely they could get out of any trouble if they had to. It was easy to get to another dimension if they really needed the escape route.

"A party sounds really great. Thanks for the invitation."

The entire diner seemed to sigh all at once. The staring stopped.

"I'll get you your food," the waitress said. She gathered the menus and left them alone.

Demons? She grinned at Martin. There has to be one around here. They're acting too weird and they might not even know it. We'll stay for the party and then go hunting.

If Martin was the type to be prone to gleeful cackling, he'd be doing it now. As it was, he gave Marlow the biggest grin of anticipation he could muster.

I have a feeling the demons here will be way better than the last few.

It was practically in the air. The real demon hunting could soon begin!
