Dissent Foments
It was time for plans to come together. Gideon walked down a particular street of Hammer Bay and knocked on the door of a little house. Erik had been long-term intellectual and emotional investment, and, if Gideon was right, an essential one.

"Good evening, Mrs. Mellencamp," he said with his most charming smile. "I'm just here to talk to Erik."

Erik let out a deep breath. "No, he didn't get a trial. Frankly they acted more like dictators than a legitimate government. Hell, the man's so full of this cult of personality he's allowed to spread all over the damn place. It's a fucking sin. People act like he's a freaking god."

"Well, think about it. We've got a country full of people like Ms. Cook. Broken down emotionally, been through kinds of hell we couldn't imagine, their sense of self trounced upon. And then the whole country's handed over to an authoritarian figure and his associates -- most of them, like Mr. Bennet, in the same psychological position as Ms. Cook, but more violent -- who's going to fix everything. All that personal emotional growth, ability of the populace to stand on its own two feet? It's suddenly rendered unnecessary. And, well... maybe I'm biased on the trial thing because of what happened to my father; I'll admit that."

That got him thinking. "Yeah, can't say is I blame you. Yeah, what he did Quicksilver was..sick, but you don't just murder somebody outright." He looks up. "How is Jenny?"

"Okay, but frustrated. She and I have been talking a lot about the sociopolitical climate these days..."

"You're up to something, Gideon. And I don't like the idea of involving Jenny in it."

"I am totally up to something, Erik. And Jenny wants in, and she's more than fit for it. She's smart, hard-working, and talented."

Erik took a few breaths. "She is, but..." He massages his forehead with a pair of fingers. "What is it you're planning anyway?"
