Dissent Foments
It was time for plans to come together. Gideon walked down a particular street of Hammer Bay and knocked on the door of a little house. Erik had been long-term intellectual and emotional investment, and, if Gideon was right, an essential one.

"Good evening, Mrs. Mellencamp," he said with his most charming smile. "I'm just here to talk to Erik."

Mrs. Mellencamp had a similar mutation to her husband, the late Seamus Mellencamp. She had orange snakelike scales, three fingers and toes that no glove or shoe could cover, and large black eyes. They blinked a few times at the arrival of the man who had been by to see Erik several times now.

"Mr. Moreau," she said cautiously. "Why do you want to see my son?"

"It's okay, Mom. Gideon just wants to talk." Erik said as he walked in.

She looked back at Gideon. "Do you want anything to drink?" she asked politely.

"Thank you very much, ma'am, but I'm not thirsty."

Gideon grinned and shook Erik's hand.

"I'll leave you two be," Mrs. Mellencamp offered, going into the back.

Erik shook Gideon's hand for a moment before letting go. "I don't mean to be rude, Gideon, but why do you keep coming to see me? There's something going on here."

"Not going to lie to you, man. There's definitely something going on. What do you know about the Genoshan consulate in America?"

Erik hissed a little, but stopped. "Good people there..friends. Andrew's got a solid head on his shoulders. Ain't nobody more committed than Gio. Angelo's a good kid." His tone seemed to indicate he was keeping something back.

Erik paused for a time. "It seems..a slap in the face."

"Because after everything the Americans have done to this country, and their own mutant populations, the best way to channel the intellect and commitment of young Genoshans is to roll over and play nice with them? Because there hasn't been so much as a 'Sorry we murdered a man to score political points'? Because whatever the understandable blindspots of Andrew's early upbringing, you'd think his grandfather would at least set him straight about what's out there?" Gideon poses each question with calm sympathy.

Erik snarls a little, but stops himself, he's not an animal. He sits down, looking at the floor a moment. "..yeah. Dad..Dad deserved better."

"Absolutely." A long pause. "I'll tell you one thing Andrew's got dead-on, though. This country needs change. Needs it almost as much as it did in my aunt and uncle's day."

Another pause. "Maybe needs it the same way they did it."

Erik looks up at Gideon warily. "What the hell are you saying?" Erik asked warily. He looks around, making sure his mother didn't hear. "You mean..revolution?"

Gideon sighs. "Man, I hope it doesn't come to it. But how'd things break down before? The old men running things didn't respect their people. Thought some were worth more than others. Sure, things have improved since then, but.... is it really by enough?"

"...When Fabian Cortez tried to start another civil war, was he brought to trial for what he had done? Did he have to face public charges, name his co-conspirators? Was the level of public debate in this country raised as we discussed what was wrong about what he did, and all his victims given closure as the rule of law triumphed? Or did Mr. Bennet rip out his nervous system in a dark room, as best anyone can tell from the rumors?"

Erik let out a deep breath. "No, he didn't get a trial. Frankly they acted more like dictators than a legitimate government. Hell, the man's so full of this cult of personality he's allowed to spread all over the damn place. It's a fucking sin. People act like he's a freaking god."

"Well, think about it. We've got a country full of people like Ms. Cook. Broken down emotionally, been through kinds of hell we couldn't imagine, their sense of self trounced upon. And then the whole country's handed over to an authoritarian figure and his associates -- most of them, like Mr. Bennet, in the same psychological position as Ms. Cook, but more violent -- who's going to fix everything. All that personal emotional growth, ability of the populace to stand on its own two feet? It's suddenly rendered unnecessary. And, well... maybe I'm biased on the trial thing because of what happened to my father; I'll admit that."

That got him thinking. "Yeah, can't say is I blame you. Yeah, what he did Quicksilver was..sick, but you don't just murder somebody outright." He looks up. "How is Jenny?"

Erik took a few breaths. "She is, but..." He massages his forehead with a pair of fingers. "What is it you're planning anyway?"
