All Hallow's Eve
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

Angelo eats the rest of his salad in a mildly awkward silence. Eventually, he puts his fork down and speaks up again.

"I'm very sorry if I offended you. You're wonderful company, and look lovely, and I've done nothing but get worked up over ultimately inconsequential details all evening. For what it's worth, I have very much enjoyed..." He still his leg, and swallows the lump in his throat. "--going out with you."

Your move, Miss Charlotte.

"You didn't offend me, Angelo.." She glanced up at him before looking back down at her food, "I don't think you're capable of offending *anyone*...You should have more confidence..."

He grins at the part about not offending anyone. "Well thank you. That's very--" He almost says kind, but decides to alter slightly "--sweet of you." He double-checks the order with the waiter as their salad bowls are taken, because he must, then turns back to Charlotte.

"More confidence...." He says, almost to himself.

He's mulling something over, but it's almost certainly going to have to be discussed with someone else first.

She looked up and smied at that. "In the immortal words of willy wonka: Confidence is key." Her eyes followed the removed food, eagerly anticipating the main course.

There is a more comfortable pause than previous ones, and the broth pot, along with a tray of raw meats, arrives soon, the pot being set on the burner to keep it going.

Angelo skewers several pieces of beef and chicken and then places them in the pot, waiting for them to cook. "One of the excellent benefits of fondue cooking is that it is almost impossible to overcook a piece. Just check it as often as you like to see if it's done yet."

Raw? *Raw*??? She looked dubious as she watched him, wanting to see this outcome before trying it herself. "Trust me..If I can screw it up, I will.."

"I can handle it for the first few pieces if you're not sure. Do you prefer your steak rare or medium?"

Because there is no such thing as 'well done' steak in Angelo's mind.

"Crunchy on the outside...it gives it flavor!" She added when she saw his look. "Just...not bloody. please?"

Angelo smiles and nods, letting the pieces sit until medium rare, and until the chicken and shrimp are fully cooked. He then sets the skewers down on her plate. "There you are. That should be to your liking, I hope."

She eyed it a little cautiously before taking a nibble...then she groaned and popped a big bite into her mouth, nodding to herself.

Angelo beamed, quite pleased with her approval. "Well there you are, then." He puts more skewers into the cooking pot.

"It's not a style for everyone, I admit, but I quite like it."

"It seems like it takes a lot of effort...but as long as all I have to do is eat, I love it.." She grinned at him, popping a piece of shrimp in her mouth.

At that, Angelo gets a bit smug. "Well then, milady, it seems I have no recourse but to come to your rescue." He bows his head slightly, chuckling.

"Wasn't milady the bitchy chick from the three musketeers...?" She couldn't *not* tease him knowing he'd splutter at that.

Maybe due to the entire evening so far, Angelo doesn't snap quite the same way. Instead, he manages a devilish smirk.

"Being Sir Gareth equips me to deal with any sort of woman, milady."

And he laughs, which gets cut short by fussing over making sure to take the steak out of the pot on time.

And he will laugh again. Dinner is delicious, desert (chocolate fondue with marshmallows and cake for dipping) is even more delicious, and he will ultimately forgo teleporting in favor of taking his time in taking Charlotte home.

"This evening was wonderful."

Angelo hesitates for half a moment, then drops to one knee, taking Charlotte's hand and kissing the back of it. (He likely wouldn't have the nerve for this if not for the costume.) "Goodnight, my lady."

She staired at him in shock for a long minute before turning her hand to grab his, pulling him up and kissing him on the lips. She was, after all, a 21st century girl.

"Night..." and she jogged up the steps to the embassy and headed inside before she could see his reaction.

Angelo cannot even sputter. He simply stares after her, awestruck and silent. Eventually, he begins to hyperventilate, and teleports home, moving quickly to his room and locking himself inside.

Under no circumstances is he going to be ready to discuss this with Gio. Andrew? Yes, Andrew. He has to discuss this with Andrew.

'Guy-talk', that's what it's called, yes?

Sleep comes eventually, but after a good while.
