All Hallow's Eve
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

"College is a good first step I think...I was never a *great* student, but I was okay...and I was looking at the coure catalogue..they Have a class for *everything*...I could just see what sounds interesting..I was thinking.." She looked down, suddenly shy for maybe the first time since she'd shown up at the embassy. "I was thinking....education? You know, teaching..?"

	The waiter arrives to take away the cheese pot, giving them fresh utensils for the next course. Andrew chuckles. "I suppose they can be, especially by their students." He smiles at her. "Strictly speaking, I'm going to be learning a 'trade', so I won't have the option to take a minor. She hoped he was right..but so far...Manhattan had been nice, but hadn't inspired much awe, at least not in a "i want to do that for the rest of my long, mediocre life" way. "I hope you're right...this is an amazing dinner..but you know I didn't bring any money....I should of maybe mentioned that before I was half way through eating..I can call Andrew..? Or you can teleport back and get my bag..?"

Angelo turns a vivid crimson, almost choking on a cherry tomato.

"I--" he coughs, then takes a drink of water "I would never have presumed such a thing without asking you first. I just thought it was wise to be prepared for all contingencies. Stopping to get food was considered a fairly likely one."

One of his knees starts shaking under the table. He will not give into shock and teleport away. He will not. He's almost seventeen for crying out loud.

Angelo eats the rest of his salad in a mildly awkward silence. Eventually, he puts his fork down and speaks up again.

"I'm very sorry if I offended you. You're wonderful company, and look lovely, and I've done nothing but get worked up over ultimately inconsequential details all evening. For what it's worth, I have very much enjoyed..." He still his leg, and swallows the lump in his throat. "--going out with you."

He grins at the part about not offending anyone. "Well thank you. That's very--" He almost says kind, but decides to alter slightly "--sweet of you." He double-checks the order with the waiter as their salad bowls are taken, because he must, then turns back to Charlotte.

"More confidence...." He says, almost to himself.

He's mulling something over, but it's almost certainly going to have to be discussed with someone else first.

There is a more comfortable pause than previous ones, and the broth pot, along with a tray of raw meats, arrives soon, the pot being set on the burner to keep it going.

Angelo skewers several pieces of beef and chicken and then places them in the pot, waiting for them to cook. "One of the excellent benefits of fondue cooking is that it is almost impossible to overcook a piece. Just check it as often as you like to see if it's done yet."
