Dragon Hunting
The sun was bright and the air was crisp with the hint of the cold that was to come with winter. It was the perfect day for hunting and it was exactly what Svalin had planned to do. She walked easily beside the others and was eager to find prey.

She had been awake with the dawn and had been anxious to go. Nine months of sitting around and doing little were past her and it was time to get back out there. The days since Solver's birth had been spent getting back in shape when she wasn't spending time with her family. Hours in the practice yard with anyone who would spar with her and miles of running. She was a bit determined to get back into top shape as quickly as possible.

A bow was in her hand and Vigfrior at her side. She would have loved to bring Tryggvi, but horses and her brother didn't get along well so they walked. Svalin didn't mind. It would only help her get back in top shape.

"What are they like, truely? " she asked eagerly. "Does the ground itself tremble in fear?"

"Fearsome, indeed, belching flame and smoke, with scales of enchanted troll iron! Twill be a great battle, though it mayst be some time out, mayhap deep into the mountains."

"There's a girl, near where I live, Inara...she brags her sweetheart gave her a dragonscale as a sign of his troth, but really I think it's just a piece of plate metal, scorched by the kiln...but she's a little fool. Or in love, it's often one in the same."

"Love ist like that. The people of Midgar claim love ist.... blind," Aridis comments.

"Perhaps that ist true."

Svalin kept quiet on the subject of love. It was one subject area of which she was not good at or had much experience with.

She glanced at the others, sensing the unease the subject brought and let the silence rest for a minute before breaking into song...that was what she was there for, afterall...

"A mighty ship was the Gundremar,
Proudly sailing, proudly sailing,
O'er winter wave she adventured far,
North ward hailing, northward hailing;
Through crash of storm and the tempest's roar,
A plunging on to find a distant shore,
Proudly sailing, proudly sailing.

All dark the night and wild the storm,
Waters churning, waters churning.
Full brave the ship on the rolling sea,
Danger spurning, danger spurning;
Loud crash of rock on a shattered prow
And down beneath the wave a ship shall bow
Unreturning, unreturning.

A ghostly ship is the Gundremar,
Ever sailing, ever sailing,
O'er winter skies she adventures far,
Northward hailing, northward hailing;
No shadow falls on the silver night,
As down the moonlit way she takes her flight
Ever sailing, ever sailing."

Halbjorn quiets. He's always responded well to stories and song - as are most who have long since accepted that one day, a story or ballad will be all that's left of them. He even slows a little, making it easier for the girls to keep up, the better to listen.

Aridis finds her lips twisting with the tune. Songs set a beat in the blood and earth.

She can't explain it. She dare not. But the song pushes away the tension for her and leaves her feeling thoughtful for the days of the past.

Svalin listened to the song. Like Hal she responded well to stories and songs.

"That wast ver' nice," she said. "Skari wouldst be particularly fond of it."

She beamed with pride, her cheeks colouring.

"My father teased I'd wind up either enchanting the dragon or make the beast flee away from us.."

"Tis true thou'rt most enchanting." Halbjorn replies with a grin. Yes, he knows she's engaged. His attention span for such things only lasts so long.

Svalin rolled her eyes. Nothing would ever change with her brother. Not that she ever wanted him to change.

A noise caught Svalin's attention. She put her hand up and motioned for the others to be silent. She focused on the noise.

The biggest advantage of her bow was no longer having to carry arrows. It made it easy for her to move faster without the weight of all the arrows she had to carry.

She immediately fell silent, alert as she pulled her short said from its sheath.

Halbjorn lifts his axe off his shoulder and tenses, then goes entirely still, eyes focused straight ahead like a predator readying to pounce.

Aridis moved slowly. She muttered a hunter's spell under her breath to encourage branches to not break under her weight if she passed over them. For leaves to not rustle.

In essence she moved far more silently than anyone should move.

She couldn't help her heart pounding in her chest with excitement. Her breath was unnaturally loud to her own ears, suddenly feeling out of breath as she peered into the shadows.

Halbjorn remains stock still at first, other than the grin spreading across his face. He lets his sisters move quietly until they've chosen an approach, then he charges ahead. He has none of their stealth. He /can/ hunt, but this isn't for prey, and Svalin is moving like she's preparing for close quarters combat - so he moves to draw attention away from them.

Svalin hoped it was a dragon. They had crossed the plains of Ida and the forest that lay at the base of the Asgard Mountains. There had been dragon sightings of dragons in the mountains in the past, but Svalin was unsure if there were any still in the mountains.

She stepped out from around a tree and stopped at the sight before her. Dark Elves. What were their kind doing outside of Svartelfsheim?

More importantly why were they fighting each other?

She watched for a second before making her move.

Aridis was half a step behind her sister. Then could not help the way she reacted.

She drew her bow string back and stared watching the battle.

" Tis most strange. I doth not know what they art doing. Mayhaps we should wait and see what ist going on?"

She blinked in confusion when her charged... Then stopped and followed them to power down at the battle, a strange twinge in her gut as she watched.

"... They don't belong here.."

Halbjorn reaches the others, snarling at the dark elves. "Aye." he agrees grimly. "And methinks we best inform them just how unwelcome they art."

"Hold brother," Svalin said in that commanding tone she had when leading troops.

She assessed the situation as a general and as a future ruler of Asgard. Like her brother every instinct was telling her to charge in and defeat the enemies, but leading meant using one's brain along with muscle. Right now her brain was telling her this could be an opportunity for something.

"Nay. We art going to help the one being attacked."
