One Hell of a night (Nick)
This post takes place after the events of "Spirits of Vengeance".

The pain of the transformation still hasn't worn off by the time Austin Caine regains consciousness. He sits up and looks at his surroundings as the sunlight streams through the window across the room.

First thing he notices is that this is a motel room, so he at least had the good sense to not crash out on the road somewhere. The next thing he notices is that the coffee table a few feet away has a bottle of vodka and a bottle of tequila on it. Both are about half full. Just a few inches from that is his handgun. Again, he'd had the good sense to at least keep the shotgun under the bed.

"That explains why I want to puke so badly..." Austin says to no one in particular, trying to pull himself off the floor. As it does, it hits him all at once.

The screams, the hellfire, the burning...fighting the man with the black coat and staff...nearly killing him...the sons of bitches that murdered Sarah...

It all combines to send Austin scrambling for the bathroom, where he gets sick for a time.

Austin stops at the door, nothing the presence of the new arrival. Immediately, something inside of screams that this guy Isn't Quite Right. He's dressed like a biker, but not flying colors.

Austin isn't sure if he's with the Angels or some other group. He /is/ sure that this guy is drinking his vodka and that his gun is near him.

"Only if you ain't used to it. I ain't been feelin' well lately, though." he says, with Southern drawl that's clearly Texan if Nick is familiar with such things.

"Ain't met too many hitmen willin' to talk it over before they get to the good part. I'm not about to offer you money or try to appeal to whatever conscience you might or might not have." Austin says.

"But I ain't gonna make it easy on you."

Nick nods. "Good man." He recognizes the Texas accent readily enough. Benefit of traveling as much as he has.

"Jack Daniels does better for the nightmares." he replies first, taking another shot from the vodka. "Don't do nothing for the rest of the 'ain't feelin' well', but none of that is as bad as the nightmares." he adds. Another shot.

"And I got no conscience to speak of. You need a soul for that. So ye're lucky I ain't a hitman."

"What do you know about nightmares?" Austin asks a little bitterly, keeping his eyes locked on Nick.

He'll remember the tip on the Jack Daniels, though, because when he does allow himself to fall asleep, the nightmares almost always wake him up and force him to start moving again. The drinking just makes him feel like crap the next morning, but it's the only way he can fall asleep these days.

"You ain't a hitman, then who are you and why are you in my room?" Austin asks.

Nick extends a hand, with the pentagram shaped scar quite obviously carved into it. With a moment's concentration, the pentagram lights with hellfire, flickering at the edges of the circle before his hand lights. A moment later, the fire goes out.

"I know about them because we have the same nightmares, from peeks into Hell we don't entirely remember. That's what you're seeing when you sleep - and the headaches and nightmares is your brain trying to protect you from the realities of damnation."

Austin wanted to call this guy a liar, tell him he didn't know what he was talking about, but the moment he mentions it, the visions, the memories, the scents all come rushing back to him once again.

He wants to tell this guy he's lying, but deep down, he knows it's true.

"I really did sell my soul." he says in shock, the realization causing his legs to give out. He sits down on the bed and stares at the wall across the room.

"I...I didn't wanna die. I just...I wanted to live and to help Sarah. And now I got one, but I can do the other because she's dead." Austin says quietly.

"How...how long has it been like this for you?" Austin asks.

"By the way, my name is--" Austin is about to tell him his name, this guy probably wouldn't believe him if he did.

"--my name is Tommy." he finishes, using his real name for the first time in years.

"I was born Nicholas Scratch, Jr." he replies, the name tasting like bile, with the appropriate flinch on his features. "I was literally born to be sacrificed to my parents' devil master in exchange for my dad getting his soul back. They failed at killing me, but sold my soul even so." he explains, sensing enough truth from the man to be forthcoming himself.

"I was born without a soul, have never had one. But I didn't get the demon glued in where a soul is s'posed to be til about a year and some ago."

Another shot, then he offers the bottle over. "Nice to meet you, Tommy."

Austin takes the bottle and goes for long pull himself, absorbing what Nicholas is saying.

Curiosity starts to gnaw at him and he has to ask his next question.

"Do you change at nightfall?" he asks.

"No. I did when I first started. Now, the demon and I have sorta come to terms. I can change when I need to... but it'll come out whether I want it to or not near strong enough supernatural evil. Really, long as it gets to hunt here and there, it lets me have some life. Sort of."

"So it really is a demon." he says quietly. How could he have been so /stupid/? This just couldn't be happening.

"It wants to hunt. All the time. Ever since I climbed out of the harbor, all it wants is...vengeance. I only recall bits and pieces of what it does, but when it wants out there's nothing I can do about it." he says.

"Yes, its really a demon." Nick replies, going into his backpack and fetching his bottle of J.D. old #7, uncapping it and taking a shot, then offering it over as a replacement for the mostly empty vodka.

"Its the Devil's bounty hunter. Or one of them. It wants to collect souls for the devil. That's its total drive. I can help teach you to remember what it does, if you want. Not that those are nice things, the nightmares get worse, but you stop guessing... I can also teach you some things to either try and fight it... which works sometimes, but make the times it does get out worse... or how to try and come to terms with it.... which ain't pleasant, and involve, well, dealing with a demon... but improves the working relationship. Your call."

"Well, until I can get this fixed, I'd better learn what I'm dealing with. I--It nearly wasted someone in Chicago for getting in it's way. I remember that much. It did waste a few Hell's Angels for what they did to my friend and me." Austin says.

He takes the bottle of J.D. and knocks back a swig, the burn moving down his throat like an old friend.

"I don't want this get out and accidentally hurt someone who doesn't deserve it. Since you seem to know what you're talkin' about, I'm all ears."

Nick nods once. "It'll take some teaching. I'll ride with you tonight, probably for a week or so, try and keep it somewhat under control while we study."

He sighs. "Don't count on getting it fixed. Devil has your soul, and only way you'll get it back is to deal with him more... trust me, that makes things worse. First thing you need to decide though is do you want to fight this thing... or do you want to try and ride the 'Rider a little bit and have some say in things when you do change?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]from_hell
2011-09-02 11:35 pm UTC (link)
He thinks it over for a minute, wondering if it would just be better to let this thing have it's way. He could always claim "The Devil made me do it" and he wouldn't be lying.

But in order to do that, he'd have to /choose/ to let this thing do all the riding.

"I've come way too far from who I used to be to let someone else have control over my life again. If I can't control this thing, then I want it to know what my limits are." he says.

"I also want to know everything it can do. If I don't have to kill someone to fulfill a mission, then I don't want to. I used to be like a few of the guys I've hunted so far and...it could just as easily be a guy like us who would've shot me down without thinkin' twice about it. I ain't a saint, etiher, Nick.

So how do we kick this off?" he asks.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]vicious_cycle

"Every rider, and every demon is a little different. But you'll need to learn the penance stare. Its fucked up, but its not killing people... just taking away every chance of redemption they had left. And we'll need to contact it, during the day, while you're in control, and tell it you're willing to deal, if it will back off some. I can get started on that if you're ready. But you'll want another shot of whiskey first."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]from_hell
2011-09-02 11:50 pm UTC (link)
"Shit, it's like /that/?" Austin asks. He's never had any contact with demons or the like, so he's flying blind here and trusting the only guy he knows, thus far, that has any experience.

Part of him wonders if he should call Anya to vet this guy, but there's no time and he doesn't want to bring her into this because she'd actually show up and want to help.

Austin takes two more shots of whiskey, grunts and shakes off the burn.

"All right. Let's do this." he says.

[info]vicious_cycle

Nick nods, saying some simple words of binding. They won't do much if it got really out of control, but might slow it down for him to transform.

Then the pentagrams light up brighter, as he works on calling the demon forth - not a full transformation or manifestation, just enough to let it speak through its host.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]from_hell

At first, Austin doesn't feel anything and wonders if Nick really knows what he's doing. A lot could go wrong here if they aren't careful.

But when the pentagrams ignore and Nick begins calling the demon forth, Austin can practically feel the entity clawing its way up behind his eyes and through his consciousness, shredding it away.

He gasps in pain and shock, feeling himself being pushed aside so that the demon can assert itself. His eyes roll back for a long moment, before they focus on Nick suddenly.

"I tire of being summoned like some dog. This insolence will end. Release me and you will not suffer the fate of the seven who made this mistake before." Vengeance says.

"Don't talk to me like some minion. I am the host of Zarathos." he replies, not bothering to call up the demon, or shout. The calm in his voice saying everything he needs to about his concern over the threats.

"The mortal you're riding gives you two choices. He can learn the rituals and means to fight you... or move onto a churchyard and become a groundskeeper for his life... or he and you can reach an accord. I'm here to facilitate the latter, or teach him the former. This is the last choice you get in the matter, and you have five seconds to decide. Hope you like the sound of church bells."

"We already have an accord. I gave him the means to seek those who robbed him of his life and now I have host to continue my mission. No further accord is necessary or desired." Vengeance says.

"He would not /dare/ contain me on holy ground. It will mean giving away his life as well. You seek to bind me so that you are the only spirit of vengeance on this plane. But look around! I am /needed/ here. The sin in this world is palpable, Host of Zarathos.

Have you turned your back on your duties to hide among the humans, as you did in New Orleans?
?" Vengeance asks.

"Five."

Nick grins. "You might think that. But humans will do strange things when pressed. He will, unless you show willingness to make a deal. Search his soul... you know he will."

He calmly takes a drink.

"Four."

"Jeffrey Thomas Templeton, tell this fool that we have an accord! His interference is unwarranted!" Vengeance demands. He fears nothing, but trapping him on holy ground would keep him from his mission.

Going back to the Hell would be better. He can escape that place if need be.

He ain't lyin', pal. You didn't say this was permanent when you roped me in. We're renegotiatin' this deal right now or I'll do worse than move to a churchyard. I become a priest and make sure you the only place you ever see is the inside of the Vatican.

Vengeance roars in anger and searches Austin's soul. The human couldn't be ready to chain himself to one place forever.

Except...he is.

This is unacceptable.

Vengeance growls. "And what would the terms of this arrangement be?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]vicious_cycle
2011-09-03 12:48 am UTC (link)
Nick nods. He was expecting to get to two or so. Outstanding.

"You let him in on the rides. He needs to know what he's done, before his imagination drives him insane. You stop forcing transformation every night - in exchange, he'll let you out when needed during the daytimes. Stop the killing... we have the penance stare for a reason. Sometimes death is necessary, but its hard on mortal conscience... and more importantly, the superhumans will hunt him if he keeps it up, and stop both of you. Give him partial control... but he has to let you hunt when its needed... you're right, we serve a purpose... and like it or not, he agreed to the deal... but he needs some say in his life, or you'll burn your host out within a few months."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]from_hell
2011-09-03 01:11 am UTC (link)
Vengeance considers the arrangement in question. It will be irksome to have the human questioning his judgments at every turn and extracting the proper price from sinners nearly impossible...but the ability to manifest when necessary, rather than only at nightfall was a boon.

Still, letting the human's mind burn out would make his job much easier...until the other fools like the mystics in Chicago begin impeding him. He could simply destroy them all, but it would be costly and then more would come after him.

Eventually, the Rider would enter the fray and then one or both of them would go back to Hell and leave no one to protect this realm.

"And I will be freed when necessary to do my work? You will not seek to stop me, no matter /when/ this occurs? In return, you will see and know all that I do or plan to do and I will know the same of you.

And I will kill only those who /truly/ deserve it. We will be of one mind from this point forward.

What say you, human?
"

Austin considers this. He's still got the option of fighting this whole thing from now on, but if he does, then there's no telling when Vengeance will get out or for how long. He might wake up somewhere to find out that he's done something he can't forgive himself for.

Or, he could still bind himself to one place and never leave. But again, if Vengeance ever got out, there was no telling how he might take revenge.

This was the least of three evils.

When we hunt, you let me lead off. If I can't get the job done, you're up. We kill only when necessary or this we're no better than what we're fightin'. We stay under the radar and you'll get to take down all the sinners you can handle.

"Then...we have an accord. I will give you access to my power when necessary, human. Do not waste my abilities on trifling matters.

I will abide by the set terms.
" Vengeance says.

Nick nods, and lets the hellfire fade, and the ritual end.

As Austin comes back to himself, Nick gestures to the bottle. "There you go. Bottle's yours, man. You're going to need it."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]from_hell
2011-09-03 01:23 am UTC (link)
Austin is already reaching for the bottle before Nick even says anything. He drinks. And drinks. And drinks.

He'd just bargained with a demon for control of his own body. There had to be some kind of silver lining in this cloud.

"I keep thinkin' I'm gonna wake up and realize I was dreamin' about a script I'm readin'. I kept tellin' myself that everythin' that happened was just a fever dream of some kind...but it's not. Not anymore." Austin pushes the bottle away finally, though it's nearly empty.

"I can't go back home like this. Ain't too many people I can count on anymore.

How do you deal with your life when the booze runs out, Nick?" he asks.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]vicious_cycle
2011-09-03 01:29 am UTC (link)
Nick shakes his head. "This is the good part." he says, without a sign of joking.

"You sold your soul. Only one you have. When this run is done, you and me are hellbound, and there's no way out of it." he replies, leaning back in the chair and putting his feet back up.

"I run a motorcycle repair shop in New Orleans. Get out on the road now and then. Once you have some control... well, you can have a life. Sometimes.

The nightmares don't get better though. And now, every time you damn someone to see their sins forever, you'll remember it. Nothing I've found helps 'cept whiskey.

Despite that, its better than what comes next... so when the booze runs out, I buy more booze. Speaking of which, if you don't smoke, you might want to consider starting. Good for the nerves, and you ain't gonna live long enough for cancer to get you."

After everything he'd done, the people he'd hurt in the past, he supposed that this was karma catching up him. He'd done a lot of wrong, probably deserved to go to Hell, but hearing it put so certainly, so finally, was sobering.

"I used to be pretty good at fixin' cars and bikes. If the media ain't trashed my rep too much, I might be able to get some money before my accounts get frozen." Austin says.

"I used to smoke, but I quit. You said we're the Devil's Bounty Hunters, right? Maybe I better get to work before it's too late. Might be a few people I can escort to Hell before I get called back." he says.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"I'll be honest with you." he says, reading the expression. "No one deserves what you're going to see and go through, no matter what you've done. For that... if you know your way around bikes, if you want a job, I could use a hand, til you get shit sorted out. As for getting to work... there'll be time for that. Spend a night getting used to being you again." he replies, offering a cigarette.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Austin takes the cigarette and places it between his lips.

"I might take you up on that job soon enough. I need to go see someone, though. Tell her that I can't keep a promise I made to her. Not until I can get this whole thing really under control." Austin says, pulling a lighter from his pocket.

Some things are ingrained, like making sure you have a lighter handy, even if you don't smoke. Never know when you'll make a friend over it.

"Hey, thanks man. You didn't have to help me out or anything, but you did. I appreciate that." he says.

Nick lights his own cigarette. "That part about killing when its necessary? Yeah, me and Zarathos made that deal. Don't worry. You lose it, I'll send you both to hell, promise."

Sucks how easy these kind of promises are to make.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]vicious_cycle

"When it started. I learned not to do that. But for what its worth, if you drink yourself to sleep, sometimes they ain't as bad. The hangovers suck, but not quite so bad as the peeks of hell. Unconscious ain't always quite the same as sleep, I guess. Stayin' up all night working, drinking or wenching and sleeping in the day helps a little too. They're worse if you sleep when the demon is used to being up and about."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]from_hell
2011-09-03 04:33 am UTC (link)
Austin nods, discarding that idea. He didn't want to become dependent upon drinking to stem the tide of nightmares, but the more he thought of it, the more he liked Nick's way of seeing things.

You ain't gonna live long enough for it to matter now.

"You hungry? If there's gonna be hangover tomorrow, we need booze and greasy food. There's a hash house down the way before you get to the discount liquor store." he says.

"See there, now you're talking." Nick has long since become comfortable with his drinking. It lets him sleep, and keeps him more sane than he'd be otherwise. Food is good too though.

"Starving. And you just finished my last bottle. Let's go. I'll even buy this time. I'm the one with an honest job."

"I wanna refute your statement, but I was actor, so I can't really say my job was honest." Austin chuckles.

"You get breakfast, I'll cover the booze. I got enough money for that and the rest of the week at this place.

Once we're done trainin', I'm headed to New York. How bad does /that/ place set off the Rider Rage?" he asks.

"Were. I'm going to guess you won't want to be near Hollywood. At the very least, there'd be an investigation into why Mel Gibson is in a coma.

As for the big city - any of 'em will suck, but honestly, the demons are happier with something to hunt. Besides... soon as you learn to use the penance stare, you'll now exactly what kind of scum you're dooming. You'll see their sins when they do."

"Yep. But eventually, they'll get hell eventually. Living after the penance stare ain't living. Basically in a coma, living with their sins over and over, til they die. Sort of like the nightmares, but no waking up. Always seemed like a good warm up for what comes next."

That gave Austin pause. This Penance Stare seemed worse than death, so it might be the best measure in the arsenal to keep Vengeance sated.

"You ever known any times it doesn't work?" he asks.

"Not really... but in the past, yes. Zarathos has had previous hosts, and done this dance before. By now, he's a veteran at all of this. But during his first rodeo, back with Johnny Blaze, he was not happy about his servitude or being stuck with a mortal. Far as he's concerned, being up here and bound to me, he's got it as bad as I do.

On the other hand, Z doesn't care about protecting people, unless its practical to do so. When he's in charge, he's walked us right past people to be saved and all that. Its a job... he's the devil's bounty hunter. I can sometimes steer a bit, but that's ultimately what it comes down to - punish the guilty. If they're still around after the job is done, then maybe we'll see how the innocent are doing."
