Checking In and Revealing Information
Edmund was tired, annoyed, aching, and damn glad to be back home. Carter Howard was dead, though the bastard hadn't gone quietly. He had stopped at his apartment for a change of clothes and ran into some old...employers. They wanted to speak to Julian and they were very insistant that he convey their message. Edmund had returned to the place Julian had asked him to meet after the Carter job. He sighed before knocking on Julian's office door.

"Yeah, I had heard that much myself." Edmund takes a drink. "The group's actually a lot older. Their current name is just one of several they've had and discarded. Some people say they we playing the game of political manipulation during Rome's heyday."

Edmund takes a breath. "I had a drop up in Tuscany once. Turned out the guy who hired me was their local cell leader. Loved to talk about the history of the society. After he was done jawing he said they'd call if I was needed again. Well..a couple of their guys were waiting for me at my apartment."

How in the hell could these people know what he was thinking about the election? This isn't good. Julian says nothing for a bit, thinking it over.

In essence, Delacroix had given him a bit more ammunition than he'd probably intended by contacting Edmund. He had to play this right.

"I need to know everything these people said to you and your answers, Edmund. We might be able to use this." he says.

"Not a lot. Just that they thought the Club and they had an understanding. Apparently the Club didn't meddle in politics without these guys' approval and supervision. They said Delacroix wants to reestablish an old arrangement he had with Shaw." Edmund gives Julian a concerned look. "Careful with these guys, Julian. They've been playing these games for a long damn time and they're fucking good at it."

Julian sighs at Edmund's words. There's always some old man trying to take a young man out. He wondered if he'd be this way when he got up there in years.

"Well, that's interesting, Edmund. Sebastian Shaw's previous arrangements don't mean anything to me. I don't seek supervision or approval, either." Julian says, laughing a bit.

"The /temerity/ of some people never ceases to amaze me. Mr. Delacroix needs to understand that the Hellfire Club is under new management and things will be done differently. I'll be sending him a message. Thank you for bringing this to me." Julian tells him.

Edmund sighed. He guessed this was as serious as Julian would take them. After all, you can't really gauge how dangerous something is until you see it for yourself. "Okay Jules, it's your call. I'm not saying to kiss the guy's ass, but..even arrogant I'm-better-than-you Shaw watched himself with him." Edmund pulls out a slip of paper and puts on the desk. "That's the number they gave me."

"Thank you, Edmund." Julian says, taking the slip of paper and looking at the number. He would have to have it traced, but he'd speak to Mr. Delacroix at his own leisure. Running right at him would give the impression that he was afraid and that simply wouldn't do.

"I find it strange that Shaw chose to tread carefully around these people, but saw no reason to do the same with those older and more powerful than them. Shaw made odd steps at times, a few I haven't fully understood yet.

Still, a portion of these peoples' power comes from being feared. When they don't get that, they move into threats. If we let them push us around, they'll just keep doing until someone stands up to them.

Bullying works on the same principle." he says. "Still, I'll take your information into account in dealing with them."

"Yes, sadly. You know, things would be so much easier if I could just kill people who displeased me without any of the legal issues that come with it. Say what you will about Cro-Magnon man, but one has to own that they /did/ have it easier.

"You're preaching to the choir, man. I usually don't get to kill people I hate so it's a rare treat when it happens. Say Julian," Edmund began, setting his water down. "Now that things are relatively less bust, could you tell me something of what's happened since I've been gone? I mean I look around and see the old sites, but..in other waves a feel like I dropped in on some alternate universe or something."

"Killing him would have been easier, yes, but I have my reasons for not doing so." Julian tells Edmund.

"The paramount of which is that it serves as a check against both his grandson, who is the current Black Bishop and his son, Shinobi. Either or both will think twice about crossing me as long as they cannot confirm Sebastian's death. He's a hostage against the civil behavior, though, I'd like it if I could bring Louis into the fold. I'd expect him to stab me in the chest the first chance he gets, but I can at least see it coming." Julian says, taking a sip of his own water before continuing.

"If either or both were /certain/ Sebastian was dead, they'd likely come at me with everything they have in revenge. Not an optimal situation, but not one I haven't already planned for, either." he says.

"No, it's not, Edmund. It's not right at all. Shaw betrayed my mother, your father and generally screwed with most of the people in the Club that weren't his pets. He's done worse to a few people outside of it. I've done what I can to provide reparations for his...excesses where I can. You never know how gratitude might reveal itself in the future from someone you did a kindness for in the past." Julian says.

"Speaking of which...I did a bit of calculation regarding your father's estate after Sebastian signed it over to himself after Mr. Leland's death. He also bought out your father's law practice, which did some brisk business." Julian says, reaching into his desk to hand over a folder with several stock portfolios.

"Sebastian reinvested the money and managed to procure some stock in a few up-and-coming, at the time, companies. You'll see now that many of them are well-known corporations in the East, like Fujikawa Inc and are showing profitable growth each quarter. In English, it's worth a lot of money.

And that money just happens to be yours." Julian smiles.

"You don't have to say anything, Edmund. I'd ask that you don't call me Jules, though. Something about that nickname irks me." he smiles.

"Otherwise, I'd like you to see that I'm generous to my loyal friends." Julian says.

"I hope I can count on us still being friends after all these years, even without these gifts. Good friends are hard to find, Edmund. Now, you won't have to kill anyone unless I ask it of you." Julian tells him.

"Heh, sorry. I vaguely recall you din't like it then either." Edmund says, rubbing the back of his head.

"Likewise, I don't have many these days, so I'm protective of those I got." Edmund said firmly.

"You've got nothing to worry about on that score. Believe me I know how hard good friends are to come by. I smacked around jerks who talked smack to us as kids, I'd have no problem 'evolving' that old arrangement. Besides, I'm not comfortable sitting on my ass, having people wait on me."
