The Siege of District X (bendytimed back)
"If we do this... there's no going back. This is going to burn through every favor you and I have above my pay grade." Police Captain Erica Strauss poured herself and her associate a shot of whiskey. The strongest she had.

"And yet you will do it. District X's time is over, and this is the way to do it." The gentleman raised the glass, before downing it. He pushed a dossier across the table to her. "This file does not exist. There is no file which contains this exhaustive a cataloging of the District's residents, and their... unique qualities. Just make sure you don't get anyone with wings involved. The media loves them, almost as a rule."

"Nobody's going to love anything about that hellhole after this, not until it's torn down and rebuilt as high-rises." Strauss flips through the files, downing her own drink. "This... if this existed--" she humors him. "--it would be perfect. Let's see those brats try to derail this now."

-----

"The public was shocked today as, in an historic announcement, the governor signed an act to grant emergency powers to the 11th Precinct. Martial law and standing search warrants for the entire District X area have been put into effect. Policymakers are still reeling, as this is the first act of it's kind within the city. Captain Erica Strauss was available for comment earlier today."

"I want everyone in the five boroughs and beyond to understand that no-one involved in this is looking to make any kind of history. These are unfortunate measures to have to be implemented, but it's been determined there is no other appropriate response to the still surging crime wave from District X, and the continuing allegations of disappearances. I'd like to thank my fellow captains of the neighboring precincts for helping to pool emergency funds, as, in an effort to protect taxpayers from the cost of bringing in the National Guard, as well as keeping public safety our first priority, we will be bringing in the brave men and women of Castleton Security Holdings to support our own men and women as we deploy into the District." Every syllable was crisp, except for the parts where the public would respond better to signs of stress or remorse.

Strauss locked her gaze on a camera. "I want those people hiding within this district of our fair city to know that we will not stop. We will put everything as it should be. To the law-abiding citizens of District X, I promise you this, we will be among you."

----

The searches started the next day at dawn. Doors were pounded on. Homes were turned upside down. Residents were subject to 'mandatory relocation' to hotels and shelters in other parts of the city. Every 'successfully' searched building had security stationed nearby afterwards. By nightfall, and the enactment of the district-wide curfew, over five hundred residents had been moved, with well-crafted gentle assurances they would be back in their homes soon.

The efficiency alone was something of wondrous terror.

"Try and coordinate with the others. I don't want you alone with an unknown mutant, or surprising the others... but if you can, don't let the police kill him or dictate the situation. Extract to where the others can put him down if you can, if not, get any civilians in danger out."

Sengai is nearby. He's made no moves against the mutant yet, but he is within easy reach of a power line. He could absorb the energy and make a contstruct quickly if the need arose.

"Get the hell away from me!" The man screams as police and security agents, wielding batons and shields rather than firearms or tasers, converge on him. He swings his arms, delivering blows that would take out another wall. Police officers are rendered unconscious, but the Castleman agents seem to stagger back to their feet and keep pressing.

The boy behind, being pulled to safety by an agent, cries out. "Daddy! Stop it!" The agent moves the boy away from the fight and the barricades.

The man's focus seems to shift as another large heat source starts coming at him. He lashes out with an uppercut that would be at home in any boxing gym, or the UWF.

This is why DJ chose the raptor form, instead of something bigger - less chance of hurting someone accidentally, and better than human reflexes - but he's not sure it can hurt the guy.

The dinosaur's head bobs back out of the way, missed by the punch by a centimenter at most, then he lunges back in, using the Raptor's momentum even as he switches to a bigger form, trying to take the guy off his feet.

"If that guy doesn't have immediate success," Gio tells Sengai, "Arm up."

She calls to the little blue girl. "Ms. Fantasia, tell your pal we want to get his back if he needs it."

DJ was handling himself fine. That wasn't a concern that that needed attention. Jason took note of the police failing and the Castlemen agents still pressing forward. Something wasn't right with that picture. He also took note of the child who called the large beast 'daddy'.

For the sake of removing all chance of casualties and negatively affecting all parties present, Jason decided to take action. He coordinated with DJ's forward lunge by sending a telekinetic wave to come at the back of the beastman's knees.

He also built a telekinetic wall to keep the Castlemen agents from interfering.

"Should I take him?" Lisa says to Julian through clenched teeth.

"He's strong... but it'll be enough for him to go down quieter. You'll have to deal with me getting a little unpretty though."

"Let DJ work for a moment, Lisa. The mother and the child, however, are caught in the center of that fight, as well as the agents. Get to the civilians first, though.

One wrong move and this whole thing goes nuclear." Julian says.

The man, still raging, goes down under the combined tactics of Jason and DJ. His son screams as he sees it happen, agents rushing to dogpile onto him, only to be stopped by the wall.

"We have interference from unknown parties!" One of the security agents shouts into a comm-link.

A male voice at the other end replies evenly. "Clean it up. Too many variables are showing up."

Some hand signals are given, and the security agents advance towards the crowd, trying to evacuate those who didn't already take off when the man exploded out of the building.

His son, panicking, takes off running. A few moments after he runs past a car, the plastic paneling on it starts becoming visibly porous. A similar effect continues down the path he's fleeing.

A rumbling crack is heard from a nearby building.

"Recon jump!" Angelo answers back, as his pupils dilate and he appears a split-second later several hundred feet up over the river. As he plummets, he manages to spot a drop zone before he builds up too much velocity, and jumps back to the riot scene.

He lands hard, letting out a grunt even as he sticks the landing, before positioning himself to keep all the targets close enough to at least one of the others. "Now!" He vanishes again, this time with the child and the others that his sister indicated. They fall a scant few feet onto the barge he'd selected.

The front of a building more or less collapses where the child had been taken from.

Pauline didn't have a lot of time to process all this, but she did know the...scary green-glowing-eyed girl's plan was pretty good. That kid was being steered to destroy the whole neighborhood.

But first things first. As soon as she catches her breath from the sudden teleport, she breaks into her best Rosemary Clooney, and, singing, reaches out with her mind to calm the kid. It's painful. The poor thing's been through so much.

Sengai was temporarily stumped as to what he could do. Suddenly an idea came, though he didn't know if it was particularily good, but he'd try. Using some of the energy he'd absorbed earlier, he kneels in front of the boy, and creates a scene of a folk dance he had once seen as a child. The blue figures dance and twirl, smiles visible on their faces. It had been fun to see when he was the boy's age, he hoped it would at least calm he somewhat.

The child gradually stops crying, although part of it is out of sheer disorientation. He looks at the assembly of grown-ups, the blue girl (from tv!)'s singing helping calm him as well.

"...what's gonna happen to my dad?"

--

Jason is spotted by an agent, who advances on him. "Shut down the field already so we can take care of this. He's liable to lash out again."

The man is indeed already getting back to his feet, hell in his eyes.

By god, that is enough.

DJ transforms again, getting much, much bigger. Before, he wanted to make sure not to hurt the kid, and had some sensitivity to the cops - but this guy is going to hurt someone, and bad, if not put down with prejudice.

The DJ-Rex roars, tail idly swishing in front of the cop line to keep people back, as one clawed foot comes down hard on the mutant, having gotten a good idea how durable he is, to make sure its not a kill-shot.

"Well, we certainly can't have /this/ on the news." Julian mutters to himself, concentrating.

A few seconds later, an EMP blast disables all of the cameras and electronics within a city block of their location, while Julian slips back into the crowd.

Humans could be so damned /stupid/ sometimes.

Andrew takes the call, along with the others he's getting.

"Don't worry, Angelo. Tell Gio that when the media asks her about it, it was part of an evacuation effort. He's not being held, and child protective services is welcome to take a look at him at any time, and we are paying the costs for both an independent drug testing laboratory to check for any residuals from possible contact with MGH, and paying for a custody lawyer, should one be needed, pending the outcome of his father's likely trial and testing."
