The Siege of District X (bendytimed back)
"If we do this... there's no going back. This is going to burn through every favor you and I have above my pay grade." Police Captain Erica Strauss poured herself and her associate a shot of whiskey. The strongest she had.

"And yet you will do it. District X's time is over, and this is the way to do it." The gentleman raised the glass, before downing it. He pushed a dossier across the table to her. "This file does not exist. There is no file which contains this exhaustive a cataloging of the District's residents, and their... unique qualities. Just make sure you don't get anyone with wings involved. The media loves them, almost as a rule."

"Nobody's going to love anything about that hellhole after this, not until it's torn down and rebuilt as high-rises." Strauss flips through the files, downing her own drink. "This... if this existed--" she humors him. "--it would be perfect. Let's see those brats try to derail this now."

-----

"The public was shocked today as, in an historic announcement, the governor signed an act to grant emergency powers to the 11th Precinct. Martial law and standing search warrants for the entire District X area have been put into effect. Policymakers are still reeling, as this is the first act of it's kind within the city. Captain Erica Strauss was available for comment earlier today."

"I want everyone in the five boroughs and beyond to understand that no-one involved in this is looking to make any kind of history. These are unfortunate measures to have to be implemented, but it's been determined there is no other appropriate response to the still surging crime wave from District X, and the continuing allegations of disappearances. I'd like to thank my fellow captains of the neighboring precincts for helping to pool emergency funds, as, in an effort to protect taxpayers from the cost of bringing in the National Guard, as well as keeping public safety our first priority, we will be bringing in the brave men and women of Castleton Security Holdings to support our own men and women as we deploy into the District." Every syllable was crisp, except for the parts where the public would respond better to signs of stress or remorse.

Strauss locked her gaze on a camera. "I want those people hiding within this district of our fair city to know that we will not stop. We will put everything as it should be. To the law-abiding citizens of District X, I promise you this, we will be among you."

----

The searches started the next day at dawn. Doors were pounded on. Homes were turned upside down. Residents were subject to 'mandatory relocation' to hotels and shelters in other parts of the city. Every 'successfully' searched building had security stationed nearby afterwards. By nightfall, and the enactment of the district-wide curfew, over five hundred residents had been moved, with well-crafted gentle assurances they would be back in their homes soon.

The efficiency alone was something of wondrous terror.

Jason decided that this was enough of a problem that he needed to present himself at the event. He made his way close tot he barricade, but showed no signs of contempt. In fact, he seemed perfectly content to just sit there and watch as everything played out in front of him.

In reality, he was not content to just sit there. He needed eyes on the inside and the outside; two perspectives to look at. So while he stood outside the barricade, he sent a thought-form projection of a fly behind it. He'd collect information subtly and without raising suspicion. After all, while he was an outed mutant, he didn't share everything about his powers with the media.

Julian was surprised when nothing happened on the first day. He'd expected at least one casualty, if not several hundred, but the police seemed content to work the fear angle.

When he awoke on the second day, however, only one thought crossed his mind.

Something bad will happen today.

He walks up beside Jason, saying nothing for the moment, but looking as though he'd stepped off the pages of GQ magazine.

"Anything happen yet?" Julian asks, waiting for a phone call from his lawyers, who were in contact with the ACLU, who were working on any kind of injunction or stoppage to what was going on here.

"Nothing you wouldn't already expect," Jason replied. He wasn't expecting Julian, but wasn't startled by his approach.

"People on the inside aren't happy about what's going down, but there's not much they can do about. There's only one interesting thing--they're getting treated like they've done something wrong, even before the houses have been searched. Everything seems predetermined."

Lisa is with Julian as well, dressed in something eye-catching but that would let her move quickly at a moment's notice.

"Of course it is... bastards do their homework." She mutters, then starts looking intently at the Castleman agents.

"There's something...." She leans as closely over the barricades as she can without drawing too much attention to herself. "Something's wrong in them." She looks to Julian, hoping he remembers their conversation from whens she was attacked. "Like rancid meat."

Julian listens to Jason's words, nodding grimly as Lisa's assessment matches his own.

"This is a high-grade dog and pony show. It doesn't matter that most of these people are innocent; this is about twisting the law to push mutants out of the only safe place they have in this city.

They didn't just do their homework. They wrote the test and then burned the answer key so that the answers can be anything they want." Julian says.

"The ACLU is working on an injunction, but it may not be in time to stop whatever they do next. The goose-stepping will probably start next."

When Lisa mentions that something's wrong with the Castleman agents, it takes Julian a moment to place her meaning. He lowers his voice to utter his next sentence.

"Jason, be very careful, whatever you do. These men may be on MGH. Defend yourself, but don't start anything." he says.

Jason narrowed his eyes and glared at the Castleman agents. If they were on MGH, that meant there was the chance for unforeseen issues.

"They won't notice my presence on their side of the barricade."

That much, at least, he was sure of.

Julian's phone rang.

"Julian?" Pauline asked on her cell phone. "I hope it's not bad enough that riding in on a cute but large triceratops would be the best plan."

Julian picks up.

"So far, it's not, Pauline. Right now, there's a lot going on that we can't see. If DJ can get airborne, we need to know exactly where Strauss is and what she's doing." he tells Pauline.

"I've got a bad feeling about where all of this is headed, but without knowing where the main players are, we're stuck with being reactionary.

I dislike that." Julian says.

"Gotcha." And Pauline hums a little as she asks DJ to shift to something like his pteradon form.

The dino nods, and shifts again, turning to a winged form, crouching down to let Pauline climb on. Aerial recon is only good if one of they eyes in the air can use a radio.

"If you get eyes on Captain Strauss or these private security guys, I'd like to know where they're focusing their efforts. Most of District X has been evacuated by now, but it seems like they're still looking for something, or someone.

We need to know who or what that is and figure out what they want with it. Defend yourselves, but don't take any unnecessary risks."

"They really seem to have covered most of the neighborhood already, except for the end you're on. and from there, there's a... Julian, if you follow the pattern of the Castledown or whatever they're called guys from up here, it looks like a funnel."
