Who's gonna hear you cry, when there's more of them than there are of you?

The Chicago Police Department sees its fair share of weird and unexplainable things on a daily basis, the kind of thing no cop talks about if they value their jobs. Tonight is one of those nights.

The police respond to a disturbance at a warehouse on Pier 36 around 9 pm and walk into what can only be called a charnel house. There is blood everywhere, and at least twenty bodies litter the inside of an inverted pentagram made of gold filigree on the floor the large warehouse owned by Molson’s Meat Packing. No one wants to think about how fitting the name is currently.

In the center of the room lies a stone table roughly the size of a full-size bed. The table is splattered with blood that runs down into the floor as well. Scorch marks mar the intricate tapestries on the walls and the masonry beneath them and there is a foul odor in the air. At the northern end of the warehouse, on a raised dais, is a golden chalice set with several precious stones that gleam in the now-bright light.

These cops don’t know what’s going on , but they do know who to call when weird stuff like this happens: Detective Karen Lynch.

"Shit," Karen said quietly to herself when she walked inside and saw exactly what she was supposed to be investigating. She had always thought she had a strong stomach mad of iron but she was really fighting the urge to upchuck.

She slowly made her way around the scene looking around after she was sure she wasn't going to vomit. She found herself saying a little prayer under her breath a couple of time as she walked.

She tried to figure about as much as sh could about all of this by herself but quickly found herself at a loss. Plus this looked really bad and felt bad. Whatever was going on she knew exactly who she needed to call here, Walker.

Even he should know better than to joke here.

One of the officers, a rotund man with a bush brown mustache, makes his way over to Karen as she looks around. His badge shows his name as "Sergeant P.Griswold".

"Pretty grisly, huh, Detective? Near as we can tell, it looks like some kind of crazy mass-suicide thing, except for the one guy over there that didn't have the guts to follow along." Sergeant Griswold says.

"There's also a trail of blood outside the entrance, too. It leads off toward the pier, but we can tell if the person who owned it was comin' or goin'.

Anything you want us to do in specific right now?" he asks.

"For now let's keep this quiet," Karen says, "We don't want to worry people until we know more about this. But what do we know about these guys. Was it some sort of cult thing?"

Griswold nods in agreement. "All signs point this bein' some kind of cult, but nothin' we see here matches any other information we've gathered from previous groups. A few of 'em have some kind of crazy symbol carved on their palms or calves, but we can't identify it." he tells her.

"Smells like they had a fire goin' in here, too, but there's no sign of one or any accelerant. No ID's on any of the cult members so far. No one had any ID in their pockets at all--"

Another officer rushes up to Karen and Griswold with a plastic ziploc bag. There is a wallet inside.

"Detective, you might want to see this. We've got a wallet with ID in it, but...you're not going to believe who it is." the officer says.

"Well the media is just going to love this when they find out," Karen says. Yeah definitely keep this under for a while, she thought to herself.

"We can run dental records and DNA and see if that comes up with anything," She says before being interrupted.

"I'm I going to like it when I find out who's id that is," Karen says.

"Probably not, Detective. Thus far, he's the only person that's not accounted for in this room." the officer says, using gloved hands to remove the blood-spattered wallet.

There's a couple of hundred dollars in cash inside, an old picture of a woman with reddish-brown hair, a man with jet black hair and a young boy with dark hair. Two more pictures follow, one each of a grungy looking young biker-type with long blond hair that falls nearly to his shoulders and one of a girl, also with blond hair and a vacant, smiling expression upon her face.

The ID card is for Boston and has Austin Caine's name on it.

"And yeah, that's the Austin Caine. As in the movie star." the officer says, a bit eagerly, before remembering where he is.

Sergeant Griswold looks to Karen. "Huh. I heard he had an apartment here in town. That guy had a new movie open up recently. I only know because they damn showing had the Arts District clogged up on my normal route home." he says.

"The media really will have a field day with this if this guy is involved somehow." Griswold says.

"Shit," Karen says, "This information is to be locked up tighter than Fort Knox, until we have a better understanding of just what happened here. Is this understood?"

"See if we can find out a bit about the people in the photos if possible they might have some idea as to what is happening too."

This just kept on getting better and better. This couldn't stay under lock and key for long and this would all soon turn into a circus. She so need a vacation after this if she could tear herself away from her ghostly side project.

Some sun and beach with a hot cabana boy or someone else young, good looking and athletic. Like that was going to happen anytime soon.

"Anything else you want us to do, Detective? Ambulances are on the way to take the dead to Chicago General. Our lone survivor is headed to lock-up unless you deem otherwise." Griswold says.

"What condition is the survivor in," Karen asked. If he was in a sound enough state she would want to question him sooner rather than later.

"You guys have done a good job," She says.

"Thanks, Detective. The survivor just keeps mumbling to himself and staring into space." Griswold says.

Just then, the door opens and the other officers in the room look questioningly at the newcomer.

One of them goes to try to stop him.

Matt looks down from his imposing six-foot-six height at the cop talking to him, holding Whisper's lead as he does so. He notes the stench in the air and the condition of the room.

This was bad.

"I'm with the really hot cop over there." he says, pointing to Lynch with a grin.

"Flattery won't get you anywhere with me," Karen says hearing him.

She starts heading over to him to talk. "Do you think you will be able to make anything of this fast," She asks.

Matt looks down at the much shorter woman, then around the room. He adjusts his hat, then sniffs the air.

"For the sake of expediency, we'll just say I'm on the clock now. First thing...I need you have everyone stop what they're doing and leave, except for you." Matt says, carefully stepping further into the warehouse.

Once everyone is gone, Matt turns his head to speak over his shoulder to Karen.

"Inverted pentagram plus smell of hellfire and brimstone in an out-of-the-way area on a dark night in Chicago. It's clear these people were trying to summon something. The question is...did they succeed?" Matt asks, more to himself than her.

"Whisper, what do you think, buddy?" he asks.

Whisper sniffs around as well, then begins growling and barking at the stone table in the middle of the room.

"Yeah, I thought so, too." Matt says, moving to look at one of the bodies. He pulls up a sleeve on one of the robed participants and looks, for a minute...and then motions Karen over. He points to a bull-shaped tattoo carved into the woman's skin.

"Definitely a cult. This symbol is familiar, but I can't place it." he says.

"Any witnesses?" he asks.

Karen stays back as Matt starts working.

"Not quite sure yet," Karen says, "There was one survivor but from what I've been told he's not in any mental shape to tell us anything right now."

"We need to look over the rest of these bodies. See how many people were really apart of this and how many were just bystanders." Matt says.

"We've got to try talking to the survivor, too." he says, moving to examine the leg of a woman beneath the dark robes. He points out another of the bull-shaped tattos on the woman's leg.

"What else did your people find?" Matt asks.

"I was actually getting ready to try talking to him when you got here," Karen says.

"There's one major thing but I know you're not going to like it," she says, "We found an id of someone who currently isn't here, Austin Caine."

"Austin Caine...? Wait. You mean that douchebag in those stupid high-testorone, low-IQ garbage movies Hollywood's been putting out? He had a premiere for one of those in the Arts District a couple of days ago, didn't he?" Matt asks.

"Before you say anything, I only know about the movie because Sarah Preston is a goddess of hotness. You tell my girlfriend I said that and I'll hex you." he says.

"So, Caine's wallet is here, but he isn't? Lynch, this is bad. You're gonna have the media on you like white on rice once they find that out. And Caine's probably the only other person who can tell us what happened here...if he's still alive.

Karen, a ritual like this requires several sacrifices of a prolonged period. If Caine was here...there's a good chance he didn't get far. You might want have your people start dragging the river." Matt says.

"You said you found his ID. If he's not among the bodies here, that could mean a couple of things. A...he managed to get out of here before they could sacrifice him, and he could be anywhere. But we /are/ near the pier, so you know what could mean.

B...he was never here and one of these people mugged him for whatever reason and he's just got a big lump on his head, but he's okay.

C...Whatever they summoned here walked out in his body. Option B is our best-case scenario. Option C is our worst-case." Matt says.

"Let's talk to that survivor. Maybe he'll tell us something that can help."

The cultist was escorted outside by the cops; Karen and Matt find him in the back of a police car guarded by Sergeant Griswold.

Griswold nods to Lynch and keeps a wary eye on Matt.

"He's not sayin' much, Detective. You want to take a crack at him?" Griswold asks.

"We shouldn't...we shouldn't have summoned him." the Cultist whispers, rocking back and forth in the backseat.
