A Not-So Fantastic Visit
Further adventures with the Defenders had been reasonably minor and her siblings (and Ohu for that matter) had largely not bothered her in some time.  She'd gotten some small pleasures by venturing out and playing small tricks on mortals by tricking them with illusions or minor magics, but that was the extent of her excitement.

To put it bluntly, she was bored.  And perhaps, though she would never admit it to anyone, more than a little bit lonely.  On some small level, she envied the companionship her siblings shared, though she thought little of their lifestyle choices, her brother in particular.

Fortunately, there was one with whom she could spend time with.  One who's company she would even enjoy.  She did have her needs, after all, even if she was not as obvious as Ardis or Halbjorn  (consorting with that arrogant fire-haired mortal!  The thought of it!).

Vincent Amorason, offspring of her one-time teacher, and rather attractive, for one who was only half-Asgardian.  Yes.  Now was indeed the time to pursue a further... liason.

Traveling across the country to th Baxter Building in New York was a simple enough spell for her.  In one moment, she vanished from the Defenders' headuqarters in California and in the next she had reappeared in the living room of the Fantastic Four's portion of the Baxter Building.

"An impressive display of teleportation," a voice said.  "Though I would hope this is not part of an attack."

Asleif turned, finding herself facing a dark-haired girl.  No, not a girl.  She could sense no thoughts, no life from her.  Some sort of golem or clockwork contrivance then.  Quite obvious, in hindsight.  Vincent could and most certainly would have created servants for himself.  "Hardly," she said.  "I art here to see Vincent.  Fetch him for me."

The golem continued to stare at her, its gaze less unnatural than she would have expected.  "I have sent a message to his laboratory," the thing said.  "He should arrive soon."

Asleif nodded, but said nothing. One did not thank a candle for lighting, or a knife for cutting, after all.

Asleif scowled.

"Thou wert serious, then? Thou doth truly prefer the company of this clockwork contrivance that doth presume to pass itself off as mortal?

"Sad, truly. To aspire to be mortal. 'Tis hardly an aspiration at all. Canst it return thine love? Or be it merely a game a pretend? I expected great things of thee, Vincent, but if thou doth profess love to something that art not even alive, then thine mortal side must make thee quite the deviant."

Andrea did not often act hastily, but she had had all she could take. Insults to herself, she could deal with. Mostly. But she would not stand here and let Vincent suffer this... this... unpleasant person's barbs!

Before she had even fully realized what she was doing, she struck out, orange rocky armor covering her arm. She connected solidly with Asleif, knocking her through several walls.

"I... I did not mean to..." she babbled, when she realized what she had done.

Oh... oh this is most unfortunate. (Vincent's mind failed to come up with profanity that accurately encompassed the situation and reverted to formality.)

"Andrea..." Vincent moved to keep himself between Andrea and the line of sorceress-shaped holes. "--stay behind me."

He bit into his thumb, then smearing blood across his palm. Asleif was a force to be reckoned with, and he would need his best game to fend her off, if he couldn't defuse the situation.

"Lady Asleif, I apologize for the physical confrontation!" His stomach turned to be apologizing to someone, but he was still hoping to turn this situation to non-violence. Asleif was a fascinating individual, and he'd love to have someone to party on the town and still talk magic with.

He wasn't about to let his girlfriend be slandered or worse for it, however.

It had stuck her! The damned thing had dared to lay a hand on her godly presence!

Asleif had never been so enraged as she was at this very moment. She was already weaving a spell, ready to flay the skin from whatever lay beneath the golem's flesh.

"For this affront I shalt..."

She trailed off as she heard Vincent's apology. At least someone knew his proper place in things. He was not the equal she had thought him, but perhaps he was not quite so lowly as she had come to believe.

She did not quite abandon the spell, but relaxed slightly in her casting.

"At least someone here," she said, "doth possess proper manners."

Andrea felt... she did not possess adequate words to describe how she had felt. Hitting Asleif had felt good. She was both thrilled and ashamed at the same moment.

She was not so certain she would have been as quick to apologize as Vincent.

Vincent had more at stake here than maintaining a possible colleague and fellow party-goer. Aslief was a very dire threat, and far too much like himself for him to relish the thought of a head-on confrontation.

He could deal with her, he'd just rather not.

"Lady Aslief... while it is never my liking to challenge a lady as fair or learned as thou... I must indicate a simple observation. You are challenging a sorcerer, descended from Asgard by blood, and from Zhered Na by tutelage... in his home." He raised his palm. "I have shed my own blood out of caution, but I do not wish to battle thee, this or any other day."

He took a step forward, his voice taking up the space in the room without any sort of magic besides practice and presence doing the trick. "I was unattached romantically when we first encountered one another, and I left means to contact me in your care. It seems you should have contacted me sooner, my lady." He bowed his head again. His eyes didn't meet hers, but there was hint of a smile on his lips.

Asleif had little doubt she was the superior magic-user here, but only a fool sought confrontation with even a mildly talented enchanter in their place of power. And blood magics? Twas one of the few arts that she had barely dabbled in.

"I hath no wish to smite thee, Vincent," she replied, her composure regained and largely back under her control.

He was right, absolutely right, though it was not in her nature to admit to her mistakes.

"Time," she said, "hath a way of slipping away from us all, most certainly with the varied challenges to beings of power that doth infest this mortal world."

It was not exactly an apology, not an admission of guilt, but it did serve to forestall conflict.

And? Truth be told to thee, reader, and no other? Asleif had no one. No companion, no lover, no friend here in the mortal world (or even Asgard, truly), save, perhaps for Vincent.

"What art done, art done, and naught be left but to carry on with what the new world doth dictate."

Well, neither had attacked the other yet. This was good.

"My own apologies as well," she said. "I overreacted. Quite badly, I am afraid."

Vincent let himself breathe a sigh of relief as he drew himself up again and smiled. "Very well then." He took a step to the side so all three of them could face one another without obstruction.

"I won't be so oafish as to suggest the two of you can simply 'get along', but I hope we can proceed forward with an understanding that my free time will be somewhat divided." He moved towards Andrea, holding her hand. "With appropriate measures of respect to my girlfriend," he looked to Aslief "--and to my new friend."

Was this what being the responsible voice in the room was like? It was utterly tedious and draining.

"I..." Asleif began, then nodded slightly, her head slightly bowed.

"I doth find that reasonable," she said, after a moment. She did not like the thing that Vincent had come to give his affections to, but perhaps it was for the best. She did recognize much trickster spirit in the half-mortal. Such passions would burn brightly... but then burn out all too quickly.

Friendship.

A most intriguing idea.

Andrea was able to analyze speech patterns (and had the prior exposure to Vincent) to know when he was working an angle and laying things on rather thickly. But in this particular case, it was certainly the appropriate choice.

She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. "I agree," she said.

Not wanting to bring the two women near each other just yet, Vincent gave Andrea a reassuring squeeze, before moving over to Aslief, extending his hand.

"Unfortunately, I am occupied with a project of utmost importance today. Can you return tomorrow, Lady Aslief? There is a film presentation downtown I think you may enjoy." He smiles. "I would be delighted to show my friend more of the city."

Asleif took the hand in her own. "I wouldst like that," she replied. "Tis but a small matter to cross the distance again.

"...And perhaps more often."

Strange. For perhaps the barest moment, Andrea almost felt sorry for the Asgardian. But she was oddly not jealous of her and the attentions received. Vincent's actions made it quite clear who he preferred.

She had little to add to the conversation, so she said nothing.

Vincent smiled as he shook Aslief's hand gently, but with a solid grip. "Very well. I can receive you at one in the afternoon. I'll handle the ticket arrangments, and perhaps we can enjoy an early dinner afterwards."

He looked between the ladies again, taking a step back, making certain neither of them had anything else to say. "If that is all, I believe I should alert the building's maintenance systems about the.. unfortunate damage."

Asleif nodded. "I shalt be here. Until then, fare thee well, Vincent Amorason.

"And you as well." She did not speak the golem's name, but it was not quite the venomous statement it could have been.

With that, she wove a quick spell and vanished in an overly dramatic flash of flame and smoke.

"Forgive me, Vincent," she said. "I should not have given in to violence like that."

"You should not have to lie for me."

Vincent let out a long thoughtful sigh, looking off into the distance. "Lying is so... undignified. I prefer misleading truths."

Hands still on her waist, he tugs her towards him. "How would you like to join me for breakfast tomorrow morning?"

Vincent blinks, surprised.

"That... was hardly what I was implying Andrea." His eyes shift away, bashfully. "If you're free this evening though, I could certainly free up some time to go dancing or find another activity we could share."

She smiled, though. "I would enjoy dancing very much."

Vincent's eyes widened as he tried to analyze her. The precision of her expressions, and lack of emotional energy, made it impossible.

"...you... you're cracking jokes with a straight face again. I'm 90% certain."

He smiles as she accepts the invitation. "What kind of dancing do you prefer?"
