Settling In

Things had been moving fast for Sengai Senyaka. First he met with  Andrew Summers, head of the Genosha Consulate, and his bodyguard Giovanna Bennet, http://www.scribbld.com/users/whoholdsthewhip/318.html .  He had explained his reasons for his coming then, the nature of his often difficult powers, and his own desire to to learn about the conflict between humans and mutants.  Summers struck him as a good man, young perhaps, but he defintiely knew what he was talking about. He seemed like the kind of individual Sengai could see himself working under, but he wasn't going to make a hasty decision. Afterwards, Giovanna had engaged him in a sparring session in order for him to attempt to control his powers during a combat scenario.  http://www.scribbld.com/users/burnwithlight/1827.html.  He was pleased the progress, but knew it would still be some time before he was comfortable enough with his powers. Still, it had been a rewarding experience. He was pretty sure he could could consider Andrew and Giovanna friends, but he tried not to get too attached to the idea. Afterall, he wasn't there to make friends.

He was currently in the consulate lunchroom, sash on his shoulders. After the training session, he looked forward to simply sitting and having something to eat.

Andrew glances Gio and Sengai's way with a 'what do you think?' look.

"That he's aware of some of the conditioning is a good sign that it might not be too extensive. He seems like a nice guy. Once he's more comfortable, I want to hear about the containment suit he's wearing."

Sengai is temporarily surprised that his opinion would be sought in such an important issue. He tries not to let the surprise show on his face.

"I believe that he believes what he says is truth. Whether there is more 'conditioning', I do not feel qualified to say." Sengai stated. "However, my body reacted oddly to his presence. My eyes filled with energy, but the pain was canceled out. I have never encountered this before. It worries me."

"Interesting. We can ask about that. So far, I'm fairly pleased though... well, with him. Anything Sinister is involved with is bad news. Definitely keep eyes and ears open... but otherwise, good start. Thank you both."

Cassidy returns from the restroom and sits down, waiting for everyone else before he helps himself.

"Wow. This is amazing." he says between bites.

"Well, I should probably go with the obvious question: What's Dad like?" He asks.

Andrew considers that a few moments. "A lot more expressive and outgoing than his older brother. Little bit of a temper - and he'll definitely let you know what's on his mind. Even now, he loves surfing, loves digging in the dirt, even if he knows what's there. Would occasionally prefer to leave the whole mutant thing aside and go live in the mountains somewhere remote - and he just might if they ever figure out to have remote mountain houses right on the beach.
Even though he's more reserved... he always really encouraged me to read, study, get involved. And especially to think for myself... which he kind of thinks Scott doesn't sometimes."

Cassidy nods, thinking over Andrew's words with a smile.

"I like surfing, too. I got a chance to do it recently and it was a good time." Cassidy says.

"Did he encourage you to become a diplomat?" Cassidy asks.

"No, not really. They encouraged me to read, to follow what I wanted to do... they were big on that. They were not nearly as happy with the decision to come here, at least now. Its not that they necessarily agree with me... and ultimately, he decided he respected the decision, but I think he'd rather I had kept out of the whole mutant affairs thing at least a few more years."

"Yeah, Rachel and Anastasia have been pretty nice to me. Anastasia helped save my life. She just returned home to her own dimension, recently." Cassidy says.

"Rachel...is a lot like Uncle Scott. She's pretty firm in her beliefs, just from the times I've spoken with her." he says.

He pauses for a long moment before he asks his next question.

"What is Magneto like? I admit, all of the stories I've heard don't pain the most flattering picture, but I wasn't there when they were made, so I'm willing to take it all with a grain of salt." he says.

"As she said, he's a strong man with firm convictions. He has been willing, in the past, to take extreme actions for those beliefs. He was a holocaust survivor - he's seen the evils men have inflicted on those who believe are inferior... none of which is an excuse, but it is an explanation.

He has also sacrificed a great deal for mutantkind and his beliefs. For most of his life, he's believed that separation was the only way to keep his people safe. He still does... but he has enough faith in me to give me a chance to either prove there is another way, or learn a hard lesson.

He's a great man... but not necessarily a good man. But then I'd say Charles Xavier is a good man who aspires to be great... but only extends that aspiration to cover a select few."

Cassidy understand what Andrew means, in a way. Personally, he didn't understand certain things about how the school was run or why it was done that way, but he hadn't been able to really get answers to his questions.

"What do you believe in, Andrew? Integration, separation or another way?" he asks.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]assaultnbattery

And there it is, the big question. Andrew has said this enough times, and does not shy away from it now.

"I believe that there is a middle ground between Magneto and Xavier. It does not have to be either-or. I believe that in the current world, there must be places like Genosha which will shield mutants, by force if necessary - but make no attack, and not withdraw. Allow humans in, even to settle, if they want to help, and share the belief of integration.
From that shield, the size of a nation, not of a school - declare we will not hide in the shadows and pretend there's no problem. Extend a hand, openly, to the world, as a citizen of the world. Establish trade, diplomatic relations, immigration, offer our aid in times of international crisis... to those who will do the same for us.
In time, prove that we do not believe we're superior - but we will not be treated like inferiors either. We will protect Genoshans, wherever they are, whatever their genetics... and we will stand up not for mutant rights, but human rights... which we feel a minimum of should be the right of everyone, human and mutant alike.

I believe Magneto is too extreme. I don't think separation will ever work, because you will always be seen as a threat.
I disagree with Xavier's sense of scale. He hides himself and his followers and pretends there's nothing wrong. He selects a relative handful of mutants for his school, and makes any others who want his sanctuary find him. He's not proactive, and he sends no message to anyone... and by hiding his group away, he gives no reason for anyone to trust them.

I don't believe in hiding. Integration is the eventual goal... but I believe you need to offer it from a place of safety... and then you need to give the world a reason to want to integrate."

Many of the things Andrew says, he'd read in books about Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.

"I admit, I wondered why Professor Xavier didn't open his doors to everyone who needs his help. They help a lot of people, me being one of them, but...if I'd known there was a place like Xavier's or even Genosha out there when I was captured, I might have tried to escape captivity sooner." Cassidy says.

"And every day since then, I've wondered how many other mutants out there suffer because they simply don't /know/ where they can turn for help or who they can trust. I agree that someone's got to draw a line of sorts in the sand and say '/these/ people won't be harmed anymore. /These/ people are not going quietly away because it makes life easier for a chosen few." Cassidy says.

"A lot of scientific journals I read seem to agree that, at the current pace of reproduction, mutants will be the dominant group on Earth inside of fifty years. You're not going to hear that on the news, but it makes you wonder how things will work out when almost every kid out there can do something spectacular, and we're not a random anomaly anymore." he says.

"But how do give people a reason to accept the person next to them? A lot of people aren't going to listen to anything, no matter how open you are or how sincere."

"No, they're not. And that's where the great equalizer comes in... give people a chance at something they want, if they give you what you want, and you'll get people's attention.

Offer developing nations who improve their human rights records people who can terraform with a wave of their hands.

Use the fact that Genosha has multiple growing seasons due to mutant population and high science combined to offer food to the starving.

Use our weather controllers in a small area to be able to grow what trade partners need. Sugar, corn, rare fruits... you name it. We can produce it.

We have resources most nations can only dream of... and we're willing to share.

Draw a line in the sand of the beaches of Genosha, and tell people they will not, cannot cross that line by force... but if they offer us fair trade, mutual protection pacts, peace... let us be part of the world, we'll gladly let them reap the benefits of being part of a world with Genosha in it."

"I have to admit that I never thought of it like that. Everyone helps and everyone wins. This could really work if everyone on both sides could see the benefits." Cassidy says, thinking a bit more.

He wanted to ask if any countries had approached Genosha yet about taking them up on this deal, but that sounded like one of those state secrets they talked about, and Cassidy didn't want to put his brother into a position to have to say no to him.

"Do you feel like you've made any progress with this idea in the time you've been in America?" he asks, instead.

Thankfully, a lot of this is public record, not something he feels any real need to hide.

"Yes, actually. A lot of nations who pride themselves on their human rights record are cautious, but interested in what we have to say. Sweden, Canada, Switzerland, Finland, Norway... plus we have excellent relations with Symkaria, and we're reasonably friendly with Wakanda. I've petitioned for U.N. membership, not because I think we'll get it... Russia will never let that happen, but because I want to see France and the U.S. either confront their issues or have to go on record justifying avoiding doing so. I'm fairly sure the U.S. will reject it, but it'll open up debate and raise awareness. I'm not sure where France will fall."

"France seems like it's more willing to bow to outside pressure or examples to keep the peace; their historical record supports that, so you'll probably see them jump on the bandwagon. Globally, food is a resource that /everyone/ needs...but I think you'll get a positive result out of the United States.

In the end, they'll probably be the first ones to say yes and Russia will have to groan and bear it. They may not accept things directly from you, but they'll buy it secondhand from anyone who deals with you." Cassidy says.
