Case of the Ex
Cecelia Wyndam-Crittenden was sure that this was a bad idea when it came to mind, but she had to know. She had to understand why Avery had spent every day for the last seven years pining away for a woman who didn't really know him, leaving Cecelia to the ruins of their marriage. She'd made her own mistakes, certainly, but the reasons for those mistakes had some of their basis in Avery's cruelty to her.

Even after all the pain, the screaming and the betrayal, however, Cecelia Wyndam-Crittenden still loved her husband.

Avery ran back to Los Angeles so fast after handing her the divorce papers that a blind man could have seen the smoke trail behind him. He'd gone after the woman Cecelia was watching from the table at Cafe Rio. All of the information she had on Sydney Ashcroft wasn't much; she had a sister, Bryn, and a daughter, Zoey. She didn't have a picture of the child yet, but she wondered if Avery was bothered by raising another man's child. Or was he willing to deal with it just to be with this woman?

She'd watched Sydney come in and sit down, order, and then begin to eat by herself. Cecelia studied her from three tables over, simply watching her move, eat and breathe.

Finally, when curiosity got the best of her, Cecelia stood and walked over to Sydney's table, hoping to talk some kind of sense into her. Maybe she didn't understand that she was a home-wrecking whore who was standing between a woman and her husband, but Cecelia was going to tell her.

"Excuse me, are you Sydney Ashcroft?" she asks, flashing her best charm school smile.

Sydney will, of course, recognize her as the woman who bid against her for Avery at the charity auction.

Syd was in New York for a Stark Inc board meeting. The morning had been...one she'd like to be able to forget. The worst part was that she had to go back to it after lunch. Mr. Stark had offered to take her to lunch, but she had politely declined. She needed a break from all the business stuff and lunch with Mr. Stark would be a business lunch.

She had been enmeshed in her own thoughts when the woman approached the table and spoke to her. Syd recognized the woman immediately. She never forgot a face or a name.

"I am," she said with a polite smile. "I know exactly who you are. Please sit." Syd would not cause a /scene/.

Cecelia was a little taken aback at Sydney remembering who she was, but it didn't show on her face. Cecelia simply pulled out a chair and sat down lightly, crossing her legs beneath the table. She adjusted her black dress and leaned back slightly, taking Sydney's measure.

"If you know who I am, then you probably know why I'm here, but I'll be brief.

I want my husband back, Miss Ashcroft. Now, whatever is going on between you and Avery might be some great love affair to you, but the fact of the matter is that you're committing adultery." Cecelia says in a low voice.

"But you have the opportunity to do the right thing. You can end this...whatever you think it is with Avery so that he and I can work on our marriage." she says.

Sydney wasn't intimidated in the least. She lived with godlings and a precocious seven year old. One couldn't be a shrinking violet around them.

Syd leaned forward. "Ms. Wyndam, your marriage was already over when I ran into Avery last year. The two of you were already separated and I believe it was because /you/ were the one who was committing adultery. Please, correct me if I'm wrong."

Cecelia's expression becomes stony. She couldn't believe Avery would tell this woman intimate details of their marriage, and that she'd have the nerve throw it in her face. She still wished she could remember what happened that evening more clearly.

"Mrs. /Crittenden/, please and thank you. Avery and I are still married and will remain married. I'm trying to be civil here and ask you, as a woman, to do the right thing. I understand you have a daughter.

Is this the kind of example you'd set for her? That it is completely fine to help yourself to another woman's husband as long as you're happy?" Cecelia asks.

"Avery is running for public office in Los Angeles, from what I understand. You and I both know that constituents don't enjoy scandal. Even the implication of impropriety can taint a campaign." she says.

"If people learn about you're doing, you'll ruin his chances to win. Is that something you really want on your conscience?" she asks.

"If Avery was that concerned about his image in the public's eye, he would have said something already," Syd said. He would have, right? Syd really hoped he would have. She didn't want to be the reason he lost the election.

"You may still be married on paper, but Avery already considers the marriage over and has for quite some time. Do him the favor and sign the divorce papers. Don't make this get ugly when it doesn't have to be. You won't win."

"I'm sorry. Did you just threaten me?" Cecelia asks, her tone incredulous.

"I'm sure that being...whatever you are...to a bunch of hopped-up, super-powered freaks makes you feel invincible, but you aren't. The court of public opinion is brutal and far-reaching and not many people escape it unscathed. It doesn't discriminate by age, either." Cecelia says.

"All you have to do is end things with Avery, Miss Ashcroft. I mean, if he left me for you, what makes you think he won't leave /you/ for the next woman that 'really, really gets him'?" she asks.

"I'm just saying Ms. Wyndam that you won't win any battle with Avery. He does not want this marriage."

Syd sat back in her chair and picked up her glass of water. She sipped it and then set it back on the table. "See, Ms. Wyndam, I will /always/ be in Avery's life. Nothing in the universe will change that." There may have been a small smirk on her face.

What the hell is she talking about? Cecelia wondered. Then something dawned on her.

"Pressuring a man to take care of a child you had out of wedlock just to be with you is really, really low, Miss Ashcroft. If you plan to leverage access to your daughter in order to get Avery to stay with you, you won't win. He loves children and he has a big heart.

I won't let you take advantage of that." Cecelia says.

"Oh I assure you there isn't any pressuring involved, Ms. Wyndam. Avery /wants/ to be a part of his daughter's life. We have already signed custody papers and Avery has rights to see her. I couldn't keep her from him if I tried. So you see, being with me is entirely his choice."

Syd glanced down at her watch.

"Now is there anything else? I have a board meeting to get back to and Mr. Stark doesn't like it when people are late."

And it was then that Cecelia Wyndam-Crittenden, Ivy League graduate, finally /got it/. Avery had always been distracted over the years by the memory of this woman and whatever time they'd had together during that weekend he'd vanished to Los Angeles.

She'd been losing to Sydney's ghost for years, always playing second fiddle to her husband's mystery lover. How many times had Avery pretended she was Sydney Ashcroft when they were together?

And the cruelest blow of all, was that this woman had her husband's baby, and was now poised to take him once and for all?

"You lying whore." Cecelia snarls, a bit loudly, her iron composure slipping away into a mask of fury.

The next moment, she realizes where she is and that there are people watching. This can't be her. She can't let Sydney win.

She cannot allow Avery to keep humiliating her like this.

"I'm sorry to have wasted my time. I'm sure we'll be seeing each other again soon." Cecelia says, standing up and starting to walk away...

before picking up Sydney's glass of water and tossing it in her face.

"I hope that won't throw your schedule off or anything." she smiles, walking away.

Syd sputtered a bit and them picked up her napkin to wipe the water out of her face. She should've been outraged, but she ended up laughing instead.

She put enough cash on the table to take care of the bill and a generous tip. She had just enough time to go back to her hotel and change before going back to the board meeting.

Later she'd call Avery and tell him of this.

Syd got through the board meeting and retired to her hotel. Mr. Stark invited her over to his house for dinner with him and Mrs. Stark, but Syd once again politely declined. She had to call Avery before Ms. Wyndam did.

She kicked off her heels and dialed Avery's number on her cell.

Avery sighs into the receiver. Drama like this couldn't be found in soap operas.

"I am so sorry, Sydney. I don't know why she felt the need to confront you, but I'll put a stop to it." he vows.

"She threw water in your face?" Avery asks. He couldn't believe it. The sound of facepalming might be audible on the other end of the phone.

"Don't be sorry. She would have learned at some point, though it's not any of her business. No matter what she says, or what papers she has, we're /not/ married. She has no right to information on my life or who is in it." Avery says.
