In Over Her Head (open)
Sydney sat curled up on one of the large couches in the living room of the main building. Classical music played on the stereo and even though it was really too warm for it a fire burned in the fireplace. An open book was in her lap and a glass of wine was in one hand. It was late and most of the team had retired to their bungalows. Her mind was a million miles away.

She really wasn't cut out for this job and she was in way over her head.

Just how was she supposed to deal with gods?

They were all nice, just...well they were gods. How was she supposed keep them from doing things like they did in Disneyland? Or Medieval Times? She was a normal...mutant. Her powers were nothing but remembering things. She didn't have super strength or any other fancy powers. Simon was much more suited to this than Sydney was.

She took a long drink from her glass.

Tomorrow she'd contact...shit. She couldn't even contact Mr. Stark to submit her resignation with him in the hospital. There were even rumors that he was in a coma or even dead. She supposed she could send it to Miss Potts.

The job paid well and Zoey was finally living in a place where they didn't have to worry about drug deals going on across the streets or the cops showing up during the night for some reason. The loss of money would hurt, but Syd had managed to provide a home and food for her daughter before this job. She could do it again.

She finished the last of the wine in her glass and refilled it.

"Because not everyone can bench press a 747." That's what he tells reporters. Syd just deserves more of the truth. "If you know anything about how I got from weapons manufacturer to dumb family comedy guy, you'll also know I used to be a class-A screw-up." He shrugs. "Now I'm a class-A screw up who makes kids laugh and occasionally saves the world."

Many of them were. Clint, Vihz, Wanda, Pym...they all had records. Some of them were shorter then his. Some longer. It never left you though. Not really.

"Fair enough. I was curious. I don't know much about you outside of what you have told me and what was told to me when I took the job." There was a small sheepish smile. "I don't watch much television, movies or keep up with celebrity gossip."

"From what I've seen so far you're not an A-class screw up." She felt like the A-class screw up. Two outings and they have both been disasters.

"Then it's disclosure time." He stretches. "I used to be 5'10 and maybe about a quarter of what I weigh now. I had a dad who believed in peace through superior firepower and in the value of sending kids away to private schools. I have an older brother who started off as a Maggia connection and who later morphed into a supervillain. Somewhere in there dad died and because Eric, the groomed successor, was indisposed I got the company. The place made me miserable, but it was all I knew. Naturally, I sucked. Eric convinced me to turn the place into a money laundering front for his friends. I said yes. Then I got more stupid."

Sydney listened intently as he told her about his life. When he was finished, she was quiet for a moment. "We all make mistakes," she finally said. "You recognized yours and turned it around. Now you help people. And like I said, from what I've seen so far you're not a screw up."

She had made her share of mistakes in her life so far and she was sure she'd make a lot more. Zoey was a constant reminder. She loved her daughter beyond words, but the child was the result of a very reckless period in her life.

He laughs. "I had a long way to go out of that before I even started considering myself Avenger material. The kids are in their screw up period" He squeezes her hand. "Don't take it personally."

"But you made it," she said and returned the hand squeeze. "I'll try not too and I'll try my best to keep up to them." A brief pause. "Any idea how long this period will last or am I in for the long haul on this one?"

He gets up. "Some days you get the bear. Some days, the bear gets you and that's the best I can tell you." He swirls a little bit of the wine around the bottle. "I'll take this back out to the kitchen."

He smiles broadly. "Coming right up."
