Slaving away
Kalypso waited on the corner with the dozen or so other New Yorkers. Kal could have easily flown over to the caterers, but she liked doing things like normal people. She had spent eighteen years doing things the normal way and would continue to do them like normal people even though she had fancy powers. Kal didn’t like to draw attention to herself and left that to her mother. Sersi loved attention.

The light changed and Kal crossed the street with the rest of the pedestrians. The summer so far had been spent working for her mother. Sersi’s party planning business had really taken off and it meant the two of them were constantly busy. Kal had barely seen Jack this summer because her mother had kept her so busy.

Not that Kal minded so much. It was something to do and it kept Sersi from bugging her about college. Kalypso didn’t understand why her mother was pushing school so hard. It’s not like Kal needed to go to school. One, she had all the time in the world to learn things and two; she didn’t need to get a job to make money. She wasn’t as good at transmutation as her mother, but she was good enough to make lumps of gold.

Kal checked her watch. She only had a few more minutes to get to the caterers before they closed. She increased her pace.

"Dad doesn't like anything too sweet," he explains as his eyes scan the lists a few of them looked good. "But lots of these are on the sweet side for Dad. Maybe one of the cheese cakes would be good.""

"Cheesecake is always good," Kal said. "But if I could recommend something. The french vanilla cake they make here isn't too sweet and is really good with the cheesecake frosting, which also cuts down on the sweetness."

He ponders that then smiles. "That sounds great. I didn't want to kill his taste buds with too much sweet. Thanks."

"You're welcome. I've had to taste a lot of cakes and I generally know what to get and what to avoid."

Unlike his father, he has a sweet tooth when he can find something good enough, he's a very picky eater. He orders a cake and gets ready to pay for it with a slight hum to his tone.

"I didn't want to get something you know, bad. Fifty is a big year for some reason."

"That's understandable. What did you get him for a gift?" Kal asked as she eyed a chocolate cake. Maybe Mom would like a treat.

"I got him a new trench coat. He tends to wear his out with all the traveling he does." He put magical protections on it, he got the idea from reading The Dresden Files. "Also a new cell phone since at some point during this last trip his got dumped in a lake."

There's amusement in his tone. He loves his Dad but technology never survives that man.

"That's very thoughtful. What does he do for a living?" Yes, Kal was curious and always had been.

Now here's the clincher, how believable is a consulting expert in the occult compared to a hedge wizard which is what his father once almost cheerfully called himself. Probably not that bad. It was just crazy for normal people, who by the way are just so weoird they don't use magic at all!

"He's an occult consult. Someone needs answers to why their son is howling at the moon and isn't a mutant? He straightens things out. It's a little like being some kind of translator to people who don't know as much."

Now either he's crazy or she knows weird things do actually happen and it's not always the Skrulls.

"That's interesting and good. Not everyone can be a mutant and there's a lot of weird stuff out there. My mother told me stories when I was growing up and there was a lot of weird stuff in them. It's good that people are willing to help others out."

Kal didn't even go into how weird her extended family was.

He smiles a little and nods. "I've always been proud of him. He tried to stay in the city as much as possible until I got older. He doesn't seem to enjoy leaving but people kind of need him."

He still misses him.

"It's nice that he does what needs to be done despite his desire to leave the city. There should be more people in the world willing to help others."
