When Christmas Comes To Town (Independents)
Christmas. Yule. Saturnalia. Dies Natalis Solis Invicti. Many cultures have celebrated and still celebrate a winter festival. There have been many names for it over the millennia. No matter the name it is a time to come together and celebrate with feasts and gifts with friends and loved ones.

Each culture has a legendary figure who would deliver gifts to children during this time. In Russia and some Slavic cultures he is known as Ded Moroz, Grandfather Frost, and comes not on Christmas but on New Year’s along with his granddaughter Snegurochka, or ‘”Snow Maiden”. In the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe he is known as Father Christmas. In the Netherlands and Belgium he is known as Saint Nicholas or “Sinterklaas” and in France he is known as Père Noël. In the United States we know him as Santa Claus.

No matter the name or who is delivering gifts, it is the season of peace, joy and togetherness. It is the season for thinking about loved ones, friends and those less fortunate. It is a time to witness the goodness and generosity the human race is capable of. It is a time for peace on Earth and goodwill toward man.

Donovan Burke has work to do. The Giambattista Crime Family has a shipment of weapons coming in in four hours and he plans to be there to stop it. He arms himself with his two Glocks, a shotgun, six knives, his favorite Desert Eagle and extra clips for everything. He's got more weapons in the van, but this is what he leaves home with nightly.

He steps outside his apartment, checking the hallway left and right, and finds a young boy, not more than ten, looking up at him from two doors down as he locks his door. The boy looks at him pitifully, before turning his head in the other direction.

Burke does not miss the large purple bruise on the side of the boy's face as he does so. He's seen the guy that come to this kid's apartment every other day. Heavy set Filipino guy with courage that comes simply from being bigger and stronger than everyone he meets.

For a moment, Donovan tells himself he's not going to get involved. This isn't worth exposing himself.

But he hates people who hurt kids.

"Hey, man. You okay?" Donovan asks, walking down the hall toward him. The boy instinctively cringes, expecting an attack. That settled it.

"The big guy who comes to your house...did he do this to you? Is he your dad?" Burke asks.

The boy doesn't say anything, looking down at the floor.

"Look, buddy. I don't like people who hurt kids or their mothers. If you tell me what happened, I'll make it stop." Burke says. The boy doesn't say anything for a long, long time, but finally, he speaks up.

"He hits us when we don't do what he says and he lets his friends hit my mom. He's not my dad. I hate him." the boy says.

"What's your name?"

"Alfredo." the boy says.

"What's his name?"

"Big Cesar." Alfred says. Donovan nods.

"All right, Alfredo. Call me Burke. Look, I want you to take this money and go down to the corner store. Get some milk and eggs, then get yourself as much junk-food as you want. The only thing I want you to do is wait about ten or twenty minutes before coming home." Donovan says, pulling a sixty-dollars out of a pocket of his cargo pants.

"And I want you spend every cent of this money, Alfredo. Is that clear?" Burke asks.

Alfredo nods briskly, his expression unsure of what's going on here. But he takes the cash and gets up to go. He's not even down the stairs when the door opens and Big Cesar is looking around the hallway.

"ALFREDO! GET YOUR LITTLE ASS IN HERE!" Cesar yells, slurring his speech as he looks around the hall.

Donovan punches him in the throat before the man even looks over toward him. Then he kicks him in the groin, earning a high-pitched groan as Cesar doubles over. Burke walks over him, into the apartment, then pulls the man back inside the house.

Between moans, Ceasar groans asks who he is and why he's doing this, but Burke ignores him. He goes to the window sill across the room, flips the latch, and pushes the window upward.

Then walks over, grabs Cesar by the hair and pulls him to the window, putting his head under the sill.

A woman comes out of the back room to see what's happening and Burke looks at her, recognizing her as Alfredo's mother.

"Miss, is this man hurting you or your son?" Burke asks.

"Please, don't do anything, sir. You'll just make it worse." she pleads.

"No, I'm about to solve your problem right now." Burke tells her, looking down at Cesar, who is squirming under his hand.

"Cesar, you like hitting women and children. Did I get that right? Okay, well I like hitting assholes that hit women and children. So this is gonna be a teaching moment. If you or your slimy friends come this apartment or this building or even on this street again and hurt this woman or her son...I will kill all of you. Do I make myself clear?" the Punisher asks.

"Man, fuck you!" Cesar says.

"Wrong answer."

Burke slams the window down Cesar's head, earning a new cry of pain from the man.

"You wanna change that answer?" Punisher asks.

"You're a fuckin' psycho, man! I'm gonna call the cops!" Cesar says.

"Real stupid, Cesar." Punisher says, and slams the window sill down again. Something cracks under the impact and Cesar's resistance sharply declines as he begins weeping.

"Last chance, Cesar. Next, I'm gonna stick my shotgun up your ass and blow out your black heart. The woman and the boy are off-limits. If the cops come to talk to them about tonight, I will find you and kill you and no one will ever know what happened to you.

"Do I make myself clear?" he asks again.

"YES! OH MY GOD, YES! JUST LET ME GO!" the man screams.

"Good. Now get out of here before I change my mind about my shotgun." Burke says, letting the man go. Cesar slumps to the floor and starts crawling to the door. He passes a hateful glare toward Alfredo's mother and limps out of the apartment.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry you had to see that. I gave your son some money to go get some candy and what not. If that man comes back here, come to my apartment. I live two doors down from you." Burke says.

"He...he took all my money from work. My son and I don't have any food because Cesar and his friends eat it all." she says quietly.

Donovan reaches into his coat and pulls out two stacks of one-hundred dollar bills and passes them to Alfredo's mother.

"It's not much, but do what you can with this. It's almost Christmas and you guys don't have any decorations. Do something about that." Burke says, turning to go.

"Sir?" Alfredo's mother calls after him.

Burke stops.

"I met a man like you once. He saved me from some people like Cesar. People said he was a bad man, because he kills bad people, but I don't believe so. I think you're a good man, just like him.

I hope you'll spend Christmas with your family, instead of working." she says.

"Thanks, but there's a lot of work to do and I don't get along with my family anymore. Merry Christmas." he says, leaving the apartment.

He heads down the stairwell to the garage to get into his van.

Soon enough, the Punisher is off to work, trying to clean up New York one criminal at a time.
