When Christmas Comes To Town (Independents)
Christmas. Yule. Saturnalia. Dies Natalis Solis Invicti. Many cultures have celebrated and still celebrate a winter festival. There have been many names for it over the millennia. No matter the name it is a time to come together and celebrate with feasts and gifts with friends and loved ones.

Each culture has a legendary figure who would deliver gifts to children during this time. In Russia and some Slavic cultures he is known as Ded Moroz, Grandfather Frost, and comes not on Christmas but on New Year’s along with his granddaughter Snegurochka, or ‘”Snow Maiden”. In the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe he is known as Father Christmas. In the Netherlands and Belgium he is known as Saint Nicholas or “Sinterklaas” and in France he is known as Père Noël. In the United States we know him as Santa Claus.

No matter the name or who is delivering gifts, it is the season of peace, joy and togetherness. It is the season for thinking about loved ones, friends and those less fortunate. It is a time to witness the goodness and generosity the human race is capable of. It is a time for peace on Earth and goodwill toward man.

Leo had spent time with his parents earlier for the holidays but was in his office in case someone called with a job for him. He was watching the A Christmas Story marathon on his small TV most of the day.

"Angelo, have you finished writing Mother and Father Christmas notes? We are sending them via the courier service. You can't go running back to Mother every time you feel like it or you put something off too long."

Angelo huffs, tying a piece of twine around a bundle of notebooks and sealing an envelope shut. "Of course I have.

Furthermore, I do not 'run back' to Mother for no good reason. That would be immature, and beneath me." He hands over the bundle.

Donovan Burke has work to do. The Giambattista Crime Family has a shipment of weapons coming in in four hours and he plans to be there to stop it. He arms himself with his two Glocks, a shotgun, six knives, his favorite Desert Eagle and extra clips for everything. He's got more weapons in the van, but this is what he leaves home with nightly.

He steps outside his apartment, checking the hallway left and right, and finds a young boy, not more than ten, looking up at him from two doors down as he locks his door. The boy looks at him pitifully, before turning his head in the other direction.

Burke does not miss the large purple bruise on the side of the boy's face as he does so. He's seen the guy that come to this kid's apartment every other day. Heavy set Filipino guy with courage that comes simply from being bigger and stronger than everyone he meets.

For a moment, Donovan tells himself he's not going to get involved. This isn't worth exposing himself.

But he hates people who hurt kids.

"Hey, man. You okay?" Donovan asks, walking down the hall toward him. The boy instinctively cringes, expecting an attack. That settled it.

"The big guy who comes to your house...did he do this to you? Is he your dad?" Burke asks.

The boy doesn't say anything, looking down at the floor.

"Look, buddy. I don't like people who hurt kids or their mothers. If you tell me what happened, I'll make it stop." Burke says. The boy doesn't say anything for a long, long time, but finally, he speaks up.

"He hits us when we don't do what he says and he lets his friends hit my mom. He's not my dad. I hate him." the boy says.

"What's your name?"

"Alfredo." the boy says.

"What's his name?"

"Big Cesar." Alfred says. Donovan nods.

"All right, Alfredo. Call me Burke. Look, I want you to take this money and go down to the corner store. Get some milk and eggs, then get yourself as much junk-food as you want. The only thing I want you to do is wait about ten or twenty minutes before coming home." Donovan says, pulling a sixty-dollars out of a pocket of his cargo pants.

"And I want you spend every cent of this money, Alfredo. Is that clear?" Burke asks.

Alfredo nods briskly, his expression unsure of what's going on here. But he takes the cash and gets up to go. He's not even down the stairs when the door opens and Big Cesar is looking around the hallway.

"ALFREDO! GET YOUR LITTLE ASS IN HERE!" Cesar yells, slurring his speech as he looks around the hall.

Donovan punches him in the throat before the man even looks over toward him. Then he kicks him in the groin, earning a high-pitched groan as Cesar doubles over. Burke walks over him, into the apartment, then pulls the man back inside the house.

Between moans, Ceasar groans asks who he is and why he's doing this, but Burke ignores him. He goes to the window sill across the room, flips the latch, and pushes the window upward.

Then walks over, grabs Cesar by the hair and pulls him to the window, putting his head under the sill.

A woman comes out of the back room to see what's happening and Burke looks at her, recognizing her as Alfredo's mother.

"Miss, is this man hurting you or your son?" Burke asks.

"Please, don't do anything, sir. You'll just make it worse." she pleads.

"No, I'm about to solve your problem right now." Burke tells her, looking down at Cesar, who is squirming under his hand.

"Cesar, you like hitting women and children. Did I get that right? Okay, well I like hitting assholes that hit women and children. So this is gonna be a teaching moment. If you or your slimy friends come this apartment or this building or even on this street again and hurt this woman or her son...I will kill all of you. Do I make myself clear?" the Punisher asks.

"Man, fuck you!" Cesar says.

"Wrong answer."

Burke slams the window down Cesar's head, earning a new cry of pain from the man.

"You wanna change that answer?" Punisher asks.

"You're a fuckin' psycho, man! I'm gonna call the cops!" Cesar says.

"Real stupid, Cesar." Punisher says, and slams the window sill down again. Something cracks under the impact and Cesar's resistance sharply declines as he begins weeping.

"Last chance, Cesar. Next, I'm gonna stick my shotgun up your ass and blow out your black heart. The woman and the boy are off-limits. If the cops come to talk to them about tonight, I will find you and kill you and no one will ever know what happened to you.

"Do I make myself clear?" he asks again.

"YES! OH MY GOD, YES! JUST LET ME GO!" the man screams.

"Good. Now get out of here before I change my mind about my shotgun." Burke says, letting the man go. Cesar slumps to the floor and starts crawling to the door. He passes a hateful glare toward Alfredo's mother and limps out of the apartment.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry you had to see that. I gave your son some money to go get some candy and what not. If that man comes back here, come to my apartment. I live two doors down from you." Burke says.

"He...he took all my money from work. My son and I don't have any food because Cesar and his friends eat it all." she says quietly.

Donovan reaches into his coat and pulls out two stacks of one-hundred dollar bills and passes them to Alfredo's mother.

"It's not much, but do what you can with this. It's almost Christmas and you guys don't have any decorations. Do something about that." Burke says, turning to go.

"Sir?" Alfredo's mother calls after him.

Burke stops.

"I met a man like you once. He saved me from some people like Cesar. People said he was a bad man, because he kills bad people, but I don't believe so. I think you're a good man, just like him.

I hope you'll spend Christmas with your family, instead of working." she says.

"Thanks, but there's a lot of work to do and I don't get along with my family anymore. Merry Christmas." he says, leaving the apartment.

He heads down the stairwell to the garage to get into his van.

Soon enough, the Punisher is off to work, trying to clean up New York one criminal at a time.

For the first time in years, Jack's parents were going on vacation, starting with Christmas in New York with their son. Then it would be South for a secluded beach.

Jack looked forward to their arrival and to spending the time with them and Kalypso.

Sersi was off...somewhere which meant that Kal could spend Christmas with Jack. She had put together a book of Eternal architecture. It had taken time, but she had gotten photos of the buildings in Olympia and of the buildings on Titan.

Andrew lets Giovanna focus on getting Angelo reasonably settled, using the down time of the holidays to first catch up on paperwork, then to write holiday letters to several political allies or potential allies.
When that's finally done, he sequesters himself away for several hours to enjoy the sheer luxury of just sitting and reading a book cover to cover.

Christmas Eve, however, he does have set aside to take Giovanna out on the town, back to some of their favorite haunts in New York.

Ben saved up his lunch money over the past couple of months to afford Christmas presents for his parents. He gets Mom and Dad gift certificate to the cheesecake factory.

For May, however, he can't really think of anything to get her that she probably doesn't have herself. He's spent a lot of time thinking about it until he realizes what May has needed all along.

The website has taken shape over the last two months, with thousands of hits every day and viewership working its way toward one million.

He sends May a text message.

Hey, found something interesting on the comp. Check it out.

www.spidergirlrules.net
.

When May goes to the website, she finds a professionally done website with several recent pictures of Spider-Girl beating down crooks, swinging about the city and generally being helpful. The timing of some of the pictures is very suspicious, but all of them are excellent quality and show Spider-Girl only in the best light.

The comments are from hundreds of people around New York who are amazed that "a big-time hero" like Spider-Girl noticed them and thanking her for saving them and keeping the city safe. There are several marriage proposals and request to just take her out to dinner or to a movie.

Many of them tell Spider-Girl to keep up the good fight and keep helping people as best she can and that she's not a menace.

Ben hopes she likes it.

It's official. May had the best younger brother in the history of younger brothers.

When she came home for Christmas, Ben would get pulled aside to get a very special present.

The first two seasons of True Blood on DVD. Which their mother was to NEVER know about.

Jack has all sorts of ideas of what to get for the holidays, but not wanting to ask Marcia for any money, and even taking it from thieves being out of the question, he's forced to be a bit more resourceful.

A few weeks of slipping extra items here and there onto grocery and shopping lists has let him put together new emergency and first-aid kits for the apartment, and give him all the ingredients to do some very nice, if simple, baking.

Bram had almost forgotten that it was Christmas time. He had been working on a case to teach something that the old ways aren’t practiced anymore and would never be coming back.

He had ended up stabbing it through the heart with a stack of holly seemingly killing it as far as he could tell but he went through his usually procedure to make sure it wouldn’t be coming back before leaving town.

After a flight back to England he took a look through his contact list to see which of his friends and people that he had met were still alive. Making mental notes to send monetary support to those still alive and taking a drink in honor of those departed.

When he had been younger there had been an effort to have something close to a really Christmas but that had stopped after grandpa had died and he started getting the weapons he wanted for Christmas.

He also took drinks for people that he had really cared about over the years who had died.

Carolyn had bought herself some nice things for Christmas and had some arm candy to have fun with later in the day. But right now she was taking care of a charity event she had organized.

It could be said that she had a soft spot for little kids but rather than letting that be a weakness she turned it into a strength by setting up a rather large charitable fund for young children for Christmas.

For this publicity event she was dressed as Ms. Claus and was giving presents to some of the children there. The was no way anyone would believe that she was Rose Red the Queen of Crime after watching this.

Julian attends this event and makes a sizable donation to the fund as well. It always helped to be known as someone who made children a priority.
