Hoops, the shooting thereof.
He'd finished his shift. He'd picked up Kassi, and she was busy. So was that Ben of hers. No way was he going to call Vincent about this; definitely the kind of guy you wanted to space these things out with, or it could be back to getting snubbed without a chance at a rematch.

He took out a phone number he'd gotten from the Avengers.

"Hey, this is Mac Rider. May I speak to Misha?"

Mac Rider? Misha couldn't place the name immediately when the call routed through to him in the gym. He wiped his face and hands with a towel and picked up the extension.

"Misha here."

"Um, hi, Misha. This is Mac. We crossed paths a couple times at the Avengers mansion when I was in junior high, and kindasorta met properly at the Babe-Rating Occasion. Sorry for, um, calling you up out of the blue with a weird question, but do you play basketball at all?"

Out of the blue weird question, but he'd been asked worse and by the media. "Right, Mac. I gotcha now. As a matter of fact, I do play a little basketball when we get a game going around here. Starting an inter-team league?"

"That would, in fact, be incredibly awesome, but I haven't gotten anything that organized yet, just kicked the idea around some with Andrea. But at this point in things, I'm just looking for a little one on one. Would you happen to be up for it sometime?"

"Oh sure. Anytime. Out here or in town at the Avengers? Not that it matters, but I'd need to let the admin know for the lower levels."

He grinned. He couldn't help it. "I'm good with either one. But how about you come out here? We don't have a Jarvis, but we do all right."

And Saturday afternoon, Mac touches down outside the gates and rings the doorbell.

Misha put out the word that Mac would be visiting on Saturday and made sure the administration could verify him beforehand. Better safe than sorry after the last drone attack.

He was notified that his visitor had been buzzed through and went to meet Mac out front.

"Glad you could make it."

Misha shook it. "You're more than welcome. I'm always happy to meet another sports fan."

He led the way into the mansion. "Not that I'm complaining, but who told you I'm into sports?"

Misha didn't blame him. If he hadn't been around for Opening Day he'd be envious of everyone else who went to the game.

"That was a pretty crazy game, just from the media point. All of a sudden, they're playing up that the new Russian prince has been a Mets fan all his life. Didn't get us better seats, but we did get to meet the players in the locker room. But hey, they have one every year."

[info]fleetfootmac

Mac grins. "I bet that was cool. And yeah, they do. Here's hoping."

"So you're actually a prince, huh? Okay, envy's cancelled out now. Thrust into the wonderful world of aristocracy, and you can't go where they can't breathe."

"That's what they tell me, but I have a nice Logan streak that helps cancel out any urge to talk about myself in the third person." He laughed a bit, hitting the elevator button to go to the gym floor. "And far too much of Dad's upbringing to think I'm special at this late date. If I forget about security, it's like nothing ever changed. The sister has always been the media darling and they're happy to focus on her side of things."

"I hear you. I came back to find out I had two second-cousins-once-removed and it was the Best Day of My Life. Terrible of me, really, shoving two perfectly nice girls between me and the throne. I love Atlantis; don't get me wrong, but I am so glad that's not going to happen."

"Don't say that," Misha warned. "You'll jinx yourself."

The elevator came to a stop and they stepped out on the training level. "Watch out for surprises. Get a group of mutant kids together, and you can suddenly be holding a flaming basketball."

"Good point," Mac says, then nods to the warning and follows him out.

There were a few students working out in the training rooms they passed on the way to the gym. They looked curiously at the new face in their territory, and would probably drift down to watch whatever was going to happen. As far as they knew, Misha was taking another new kid through an orientation workout.

Misha ushered Mac into the gym with the half court. A net bag of balls was sitting in a corner. He went to it and turned it upside down. Two were tossed at Mac, one after the other.

"Need to warm up?"

Mac catches the balls and puts them under each arm, then recalls he's still wearing his coat -- and, under it, his canteen -- and refinagles them in his arms to get said things off. Coat and canteen are deposited against the wall -- after a drink.

"Warm-up'd be good, thanks. It's been a while." He tosses one ball back to Misha, gets himself a little more limber, and takes a practice shot.

Misha's morning had included his own workout and those of the students he helped when home. He would be the first to say that basketball wasn't exactly his game, but he loved sports in general and wouldn't embarrass himself on a court.

He took a shot from where he stood and ran in to scoop up the ball and dribble it back for another. He watched Mac's warm up with interest.

As Mac loosens up and shoots, he gets fast, and he gets focused. A chance to really play the sport has an enthusiasm for him that certain members of his family only have for ... well, the sound of their own voices, some might say.

Soon, "Okay, awesome. Let's get started. Want to go for ten? 15? Any ground rules? It's your turf."

"Mutant ball is a little rougher than regular ball," Misha said, rolling the ball from hand to hand. "It's easy when you know the other side can take it, but powers are only used if both sides agree. I don't have a problem it. How about we take it to ten and see how it goes?"

"It's a good way to teach teamwork," Misha said. "And if you're looking for a real challenge, I can arrange a few matches with some real powerhouses."

He grinned and tossed the ball he was holding to Mac. "Away team can take it in first."

"I'd always appreciate the recommendation," he says gratefully.

And once Mac gets started, he's not half bad. Moving quickly, though he never takes flight, getting good and focused on the layup.

Dad was fond of telling him that he should pay attention to people on other teams as one day he might have to team up with them and knowing their strengths would only help. You also might have to go up against them in the future, and knowing their weaknesses would only help.

Misha moved enough to see if he could make Mac react to feints, and was pleased to see the other guy had serious focus. It would make finding his rhythm easier.

He leaped to catch the ball before it hit the basket and felt himself fall just a bit too much to do more than feel it brush his fingers.

The shot sinks, and Mac smiles for a moment before he quickly has his eyes on Misha as he gets the ball.

Misha grinned and shifted to keep him in sight. He moved with Mac, ready to slide in and try for the ball.

"What's your position on hockey?" he asked.

Mac's got the sheer speed, but he's got a feeling Misha has the edge on reflex. He tries to look for opportunities while keeping an eye on Misha.

And answering the question. Right. "Good to watch, but doesn't include the option of playing barefoot."
