The Long Way Home
Ohu Amane means "Sees Danger" in Twi, the modern language of the Ashanti, and the name is quite appropriate. The eldest son of Anansi, Ohu was gifted with the ability to see danger. He used this power to help save his father from a giant river monster (with a little help from his siblings, he supposes). He knows when there's serious trouble.

But he's never had a chance to really explore the realms of mortals before. He's always been kept at home, in the realm of the Ashanti gods. Which was boring. His father being the keeper of all stories, Ohu has heard all the stories from the mortal realms, and he finds them fascinating. Of course, these days, there are more stories coming into his father's realm than ever before -- a person can't keep up! So Ohu finally convinced his father to let him come to the mortal realm*, accompanied by other gods, the children of Asgardians.

This should be a most exciting expedition! They've already shown up in Oklahoma, surrounded by wheat. If they can just find a cornfield, he's sure there will be evil there. There's always evil in cornfields in the stories.

But the field gives way to a road, and Ohu, the guide for his friend Asgardians, choses a way and begins walking it. They are heading for New York, and certainly all roads must lead to New York eventually.

The occasional car or truck passing by, Ohu leads them down the road, over two bridges, and into the city apparently named "Kingfisher." Around them, the populace gives the gods strange looks.

"You see, my friends? I have lead us to a place where we may acquire transportation to the glorious city of New York!"

*If, by "convinced his father," one means, "ran away without telling him."

Halbjorn is seriously out of sorts by the time they're getting to town. "Thou'rt sure those people within the metal chariots wert in no danger? I wouldst swear that last such conveyance wast growling at me." he grumbles, having almost smashed every car they've come across so far for just that reason. Anything that growls like that must eat people.

"Aye. Remember the tale Fandral didst tell us about Volstagg ripping one apart and Father getting quite vexed?" Svalin said as she walked along Tryggvi. The metal beasts had been unsettling with the loud noises they made and on a few occasions Tryggvi had reared. "Father explained that the rolling metal things were used for transportation."

All-Father, grant me the strength not to slay mine brother for his stupidity...

Asleif caught sight of a mortal staring at her and regarded him coldly. "Thou dost presume to look upon mine godly presence directly, mortal? I had thought the arrogance of your kind long gone."

He regarded her strangely for a minute. "Geeze, lady. What're you, high?"

She brought up a hand and began to weave a spell. "I shalt have to teach thee a lesson, it seems..."

"Leave the mortals alone, Asleif," Ohu suggests. "She thinks you're a 'stoner,' a mortal that partakes in water pipes and giggles a lot. And eats lots of food." He frowns. "But usually, these mortals don't have as strong a sense of style as you do."

"How strange these mortals be," Aridis comments. But she is smiling and waving at a few pedestrians as they walk. "But they do look quite interesting. What strange things they wear. Why do the women dress like that?"

She's curious about jeans she sees.

The reason for jeans may become obvious. Halbjorn has noticed the girls in jeans too. Enough that he's not even chiding his sister. "Aye. Most strange."

"They started wearing jeans after they set fire to their bras," Ohu explains.

Svalin noticed the jeans as well. They would be more practical for fighting. They were worth investigating.

"What art bras?"

Asleif's irritation at the mortal and being unable to turn him into some form of rodent passed, and she instead made a derisive noise at their guide's explanation.

"They art even frailer than I had thought," she remarked.

"Frail, mayhap... but how much greater dost that make their heroes? To be able to yet face such dangers when living such short lives, and needing bras?"

"They art like butterflies, perhaps. Lovely in their own way yet with such short lives," Aridis points out a little sadly. She would hate to be fated to such a short life when there is so much to experience.

"I think our duty to look out for them is all that more important. To see them denied their full life spans saddens me greatly mine sisters and brother," Ardis finally says while watching people who are curiously watching them. The normal citizens are pretty much convinced some crazy unknown rock stars got away from their agents and are being very silly or something like that.

Ohu leans to Halbjorn. "If you like the jeans they wear," he whispers conspiratorially, "perhaps we will be lucky enough to meet the famed Sisterhood of Traveling Pants."

Okay, so he didn't get around to reading that story, but he remembers the title at least. He's sure it must be a great adventure.

"Ist this Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants a mighty group of shield maidens?" Svalin asked as she managed to over hear Ohu mention it to Halbjorn. "'Twoud be most pleasurable to meet fellow sisters in arms."

Asleif would correct Ardis for presuming to speak for her (particularly where the inhabitants of Midgard are concerned), but further nonsense from her traveling companions distracts her.

"I doubt there are enough worthy warriors of Midgard to form such a band, sister."

"Of course there ist! The Avengers hath had many female warriors over the years. Did thou not listen to any of Father's stories? Perhaps they hath formed a new team."

Her stomach rumbled. It had been a long walk to the city.

"My stomach doth require food."

"Well let us find a pub then. I am sure they will take our coinage," Aridis says with a warm grin.

What? Did they think she would run around without her coin purse in case of something like this?

The blood of Frost Giants ran in Asleif's blood, as it did her brother. She too, finds the climate rather distasteful, though she would never admit to agreeing with him.

"Regardless, we have traveled much already. A respite would not be out of the question."

Svalin had a greater concern than the heat at the moment. She turned to Tryggvi and spoke softly to him. He wandered over to the closest patch of grass (the park in the town center) and started grazing.

"Let us find the closest eating establishment and partake in Migard food."

"Here!" Ohu points. "This is a 'diner.' There are often adventures to be found in diners. Often criminals come to diners to rob them, until men with guns dining there stop them. This happened once to a man with 'bad motherfucker' written on his wallet, and it was a most-incredible story."

Halbjorn pauses, looking vaguely shocked. Then his fists ball up. "If this man showed up with his wallet or whate'er else admitting to such vile deeds, I wouldst hath to thrash him, surely."
