The automatic security systems had not failed to notice people walking up the riverbed -- yes; Doom has sensors on the riverbed. It's Doom. He does that.
So as soon as they come up, what little mechanical sentries Castle Doom still has left to automatically throw at the invaders are there.
It does have the courtesy to calmly flash a few things at those in the castle that it's doing this, though.
