Just Another Afternoon At Starbucks (open)
Vincent, as a rule, did not like the smell of coffee. He found it to be bitter and that it stuck with one for hours.

He did however, like people, and this particular Starbucks as good a place as any to enjoy their comings and goings. The new lemonade mix they had wasn't bad either. (Kristoff and general standards had long since ruined him for any franchise-produced tea, so lemonade it was.)

He hadn't yet worked up the nerve to approach Kristoff with his plan yet, although the talk with Andrea had certainly helped. A new paperback was also a good way to spend an hour or two, re-reading each page twice so as not to finish it too quickly. The katakana snuck onto the main character's staff on the cover had been worth a chuckle as well.

"Kleeea," Shanna mutters under her breath as she stares at the menu. There was so much she could try. And at the same time she had to be careful. Breaking out in hives from a drink wasn't fun. She ended up just staying put far enough away from the menu that she wasn't obviously confused.

A familiar voice catches his attention, and Vincent turns. "Well hello again. Expanding your palate still?"

Shanna blinks then smiles openly. "Hello Vincent. And yes. Coffee seems to be designed to transfer heat into the body."

Which makes it very interesting to her for obvious reasons. "I want to try something sweet though."

"I recommend tea, personally. More health benefits, and much of the same in the way of heat. Stash is an acceptable brand." He points out the selections available.

"Would you care to join me?"

"I'll get some tea first but I'd like to," she says with a smile. It doesn't take her very long and soon she joins Vincent.

She seems to relish the heat coming off of the cup quite a bit.

Vincent smiles. "Have you found any more cuisine besides those vegan dishes that suited you? Aside from the diversity, I have to say I'm a bit surprised you settled in New York. Our winters are not legendary, but they're certainly not mild either."

"I discovered quite by accident I can eat venison. It is odd but a familiar tasting meat. It reminded me of home. I also discovered many of your fish that you eat for food do not bother me. But 'shell-fish' does not settle well with me without lots of milk. Clam chowder, as you call it, is godly."

She giggles pleasantly. "Oh but for me your winters in New York sound so mild. I may even be able to dress in the simple summer suit of my people without a cloak to hold my heat in."

Vincent smiles. "The majority of us are simply so much protein and carbon. Animals included. It's not surprising you should find at least one creature's taste familiar."

He grins at her appraisal of clam chowder. "There's a most excellent venue in Boston I should take you to sometime then. 'Legal Seafood'. Wonderful establishment, and it's adjacent to the aquarium, which is an enjoyable diversion in its own right."

Several tables away, tucked into a nook and working with a sketchpad trying to get down details of a project for his next assignment and a plain brewed coffee, Jack realized he'd seen the two people talking before.

He glanced over the edge of the sketchpad trying to place them. He was able to rule out the recent Rose Red incident, but he knew it was connected to something in his 'other' life.

She doesn't recognize Jack right away. Right now she is just happy to be around Vincent. He is an interesting person.

"I had wanted to see an aquarium. I was curious about the creatures of your world who can survive the cold so well, I'm told many of them are aquatic. I saw polar bears at the zoo." She brightens. "They're adorable. We have beasts similar to them in appearance. Only larger in side with blue skin instead of black. Their noses are white though because of a layer of fur that grows over it."

She speaks rather enthusiastically with one hand waving in the air lightly.

Vincent catches sight of the semi-familiar face and regards him with a friendly nod, and a wave to join them if he wishes, pushing out the chair opposite him, adjacent to Shanna, with his foot under the table.

"I'm not certain I'd call fully grown polar bears adorable, but they are impressive creatures. Did you see the exhibit at the Bronx Zoo or the Central Park one? If you're interested in cold weather creatures, the Central Park zoo has a very nice penguin exhibit. They're flightless aquatic birds." He smiles. "The Boston Aquarium has a very impressive cold-water penguin exhibit as well, even if it lacks polar bears."

Jack paused in his sketching a moment to nod back. After a moment, he decided to take the offer and sit with them. It would free up a table and he would be able to place them.

He gathered up his things and took the extra seat. "Hi," he greeted them. "Jack Murdock. Sorry, I thought I knew who you were but I can't recall any names."

"Shanna," she offers.

"And they are. Truly. They remind me of home," she says with a faint smile. She looks closely at Jack and it takes her a moment but she recognizes him after she goes through her memory.

"I think I remember you, Jack. You might have been on a ship? With some other gentlemen."

"Vincent." He nods to Jack. He tenses slightly as Shanna brings up the ship. That had been a string of very awkward incidents.

"Shanna, if you don't mind my asking, how have you been fending for yourself in your time here? What sort of work have you been doing?"

The ship. Jack wouldn't forget that experience for a very long time.

It makes him tense to realizes the woman was on the ship. He glanced around to see if there were others and another kidnapping in play.

She should have been more careful when saying that. She shakes her head.

Jack. I quit. I was against that they were willing to use force. My people are largely pacifists. We don't condone such actions."

Shanna answers Vincent's question with a small smile. "I've been working in pet shop and cleaning places. It's.... Been difficult. Apparently letting people think I'm Canadian helps though."

Vincent nods to Jack, trying to look reassuring without belaboring the point with too many words.

"Yes... telling people you're Canadian is almost as good as being invisible. It's the socio-political version of a dismissal charm."

"I quit." She nods then settles back into her seat sipping at her drink. "It was a good choice. But I find that I'm having some difficulty adjusting to life on Earth. Your people are.... Quite different. And some of your foods are toxic to me."

"Have you tried getting in touch with the Avengers? Dr Henry Pym is the world's foremost expert in organic chemistry. He could most likely devise a battery of tests relating to your dietary needs. People manage to live with all sorts of food allergies."

"Some of our food is toxic to us."

Jack's eyes widened when Vincent suggested she go looking for the Avengers without warning them or checking if Dr. Pym had time in his schedule. "Maybe first you talk to Dr. Pym before sending a stranger who participated in kidnapping some of them to their door?"

"That would be wise. While I'm sturdy, I don't wish to upset anyone," Shanna replies with an embarrassed shrug. "I have herd that it is traditional around the powered set of your people for them to ah, attack a known threat."

Vincent nods to both of them. "I could help you with introductions if you like."

He smirks. "Superheroes tend to attack each other quite often as well, even when not actively a threat. A book could be written about the most common misunderstandings that spark such clashes."

"I find the 'vegan' stuff is the safest for me," Shanna admits. "I have to be very careful not to try and eat things that others might find unacceptable too. I don't really understand why you would grow grass if it isn't a food source... And flowers. They're pretty, yes. But they could be adapted as a food source."

She shrugged. "Of course I shouldn't say it's strange. You would likely find what my people enjoy as strange. Or perhaps bland since we lack the environment to produce things like pepper and sugar."

"Grass isn't cultivated. It's a primary food supply for most herbivorous wildlife though. It's value to humans, besides grazing for cattle, is that it holds soil together during rainfall. And there are a number of flowers that are known as edible." Vincent is happy to point out.

"Spend some time in San Francisco and you'll find people out there who'll serve you a dish of greens and flowers that will include some grasses. Organic eating may have started there the way they pursue the concept."

This was a very odd conversation to be having, but Jack couldn't think of a better topic. His own problems with enhanced taste and smell kept him from eating many of the same things Shanna complained she couldn't either.

"A lot of social dinners outside the city include offering your guest a plate and an invitation to go to the garden and pick whatever they'd like for a salad."
