Providence Falls
To say that Scott had found the results of X-Force's mission distressing was an understatement. There was the fact that Nathan had played them; Scott was inclined to give his son the benefit of the doubt, but when he went and did something like this, using the students to carry out his own plans, well...

There was the appearance of a new group of Mutant terrorists. Especially one led by a woman styling herself after Magneto. In these troubling times, most of the so-called "evil" or revolutionary mutant groups had had the good sense to go to ground. Worse, the woman was bound to attract Magneto's attention, or worse, that of his followers. The very presence of a revolutionary cloaking herself in the Master of Magnetism's old standard could set the world of Mutants ablaze, with sides being chosen all around. It might well lead to a mutant civil war.

But worst of all, however, was the state of the team itself. Joey had been grievously injured. Tina was exhibiting strange side effects and it was possible the others would be experiencing the same. And even Rose was not her usual self, having retreated more into herself, in a way Scott had only seen in Logan a few times before.

The meeting with the team was a casual one, to hopefully keep them at ease. But this would not be easy. Not with the personalities that made up the team.

"Thank-you all for meeting like this," he said. "I know the last few days haven't been easy, and I want it known I appreciate the efforts you all put through. If the X-Tremists hadn't appeared, I have little doubt I'd be congratulating you on a job well done. You took a situation full of unknowns and performed above and beyond the call."

He frowned. "Unfortunately, in the wake of as many unknowns as we're currently facing here, and in light of giving you all time to recover... we have decided to temporarily suspend you all from field status; restoration of such... will come when we feel it safe, for both you and everyone else."

Anastasia's jaw nearly hit the floor. SUSPENSION?! Yeah, their last couple of missions had been...rough, to say the least. But that was no reason to pull them out of the field.

Yeah, Dad probably had his reasons, but still. Anastasia just wasn't too crazy about this.

For the moment Tina felt stable. The diamond and spikes had gone away for the moment and her voice was much more its norm. She was still feeling various things in her body--she had no idea what was going on in there--but at least she wasn't as desperately out of control right now.

What she was, however, was pissed.

"Somehow, I saw this coming. Send us out, nearly get us killed, and thank us by benching us."

Rose was not a happy camper. Her primary worry was on Joey, of course, and how she had let him down, let him get hurt. She didn't know if he blamed her, but she didn't doubt that he did. She blamed herself, after all.

But right now? Summers was gettin' here angry.

"Yeah?" she growled. "I figger that'll last until you come up with somethin' else that needs doin' that you can't send none of the good kids out on. 'cause you know what, Summers? You want to know what I figured out?"

Her grin was a wicked, terrible one, the stuff nightmares were made of. "You guys threw this team together out of what was left over when nobody else was around. And you looked and saw what you had. Most of us? We're from the wrong side of the tracks. We can do stuff and think stuff you wouldn't.

Me? I'm from a whole 'nother dimension and you ain't exactly my biggest fan, 'cause I don't salute and tow the line like everybody else in this place.

Tina? Tina, who dang near died on one of these missions? Even if you put her in charge, it was 'cause you didn't have any other options; you know she ain't got nothin' ta do with her mother, an' you still keep thinkin' about when the family connection's gonna bring all this crashin' down. And right now, when she's at her worst, this is all you've got to say?

Joey? Joey, who bled and nearly died and might never... might... might never see again on account of this team, well, he's just some guy who was passin' through with a con man attitude and one foot in petty crime, so who cares what happens to him.

Chris? Well, Chris ain't a mutant. An' even though she's lived here plenty, been on one team or another here, got captured by the big blue-lipped bastard who nearly wiped out the world, and still keeps fightin' for this place when she ain't one of the so-called oppressed here? Well, sure, you can just write her off, because she's not one of us.

And Annie? Well, I ain't figured out why Annie's here. You Summers are good with kids from all over creation. Only thing I can figger is Annie's here to keep an eye on the rest of us, report back to Daddy in case us horrible little people start gettin' a little more criminal. Keep us legal-like.

I've been almost eaten by a god-forsaken mutant island with a mad-on for you oldster, set on fire, and now, you tell me I ain't good enough to fight for you no more?"

Her grin was a terrible, petty one. "I can't see what my mom ever saw in you. Not after this. Not after how you're treating us, like something you can just throw a bone when you want it, and otherwise toss around like trash."

"And we aren't trash and we aren't some untrustworthy dog you keep penned up until you need something bad done on the sly. If you want dirty work done from now on, find someone else to do it. You ought to be ashamed of yourself, treating some of your own like less than people. I'm done. My mother might be abominable, but at least she's honest about using people."

Tina glared at Scott and when she did...the man when flying back against the wall.

"We're better than this, Rose. C'mon. We'll find someone to help Joey our own damn selves."

Joey is late to the meeting for three reasons: 1. Doctor McCoy had to check him out again, after initially informing him that there's practically no chance of him seeing ever again. That's still in place but...2. Something interesting happened during the examination.

3. It's a raging bitch to navigate a hallway with a walking stick when you can only see heat signatures.

One of the students leads Joey to meeting room just in time for him to hear Rose's tirade and Tina's rebuttal. Wearing his a pair of sunglasses, several bandages over his eyes, jeans and t-shirt, Joey scans the room.

Ana-Pants is there, as are Rose and Tina, and Kitten. Oh, there's Summers, sliding down a wall.

"Ladies, I understand we ain't all seein' eye-to-eye around here, but let's give the Boss Man some credit. He looks about as smart as we do, right now, getting outplayed by his son. That's gotta hurt a little bit." Joey says.

"But I don't blame Cyclops for what happened, and you guys shouldn't, either. Here's why: Summers did use the tools he had at the time, but he we were the only tools that could go and do the job. Another X-Team would have been made before they even showed up and wouldn't have been able to stop arguing long enough to make a decision on the cure. Those primadonnas in X-Factor wouldn't have been able to stop smiling at the cameras long enough to look deeper into what was happening." Joey says.

"So yeah, we went there, we did our job and yeah, we got burned. It had to happen, right? We've had too many close scrapes already, and we're still damn lucky that no one died. But Xavier chose us because we could the things that the rest of the X-Men would have been paralyzed by indecision to do. They keep usin' us because we're good at it, and actually, I got no problem with that." Joey says, making his way to a chair near Rose.

"I do think it's bullshit you're trying to shut us down. The X-Tremists and the Nasty Boys are still out there and you know that Cassidy ain't safe yet. Not until we make sure those guys are in the ground. Not to mention, I made a call to my guy Thurston Hale this morning to check on somethin' and found out that Brad Simmons vanished before Cable could get to him.

So that's one person out there that still has the knowledge of what went down in their little shop of horrors. And now he's out there, free to sell his knowledge to whichever group of mutant-hating bigots he can find." Joey says, leaning across the table to talk to everyone, Cyke included.

"So, the way I see it, Cyke is this: you can rescind the order to shut us down and let us get back to work after we rest...or you can wonder just how big a mess we're gonna make when we go after all these assholes ourselves." Joey tells him.

"And I know I'm going to find Brad Simmons and discuss his impure thoughts about my girl, so think about that before you decide if you want workin' for you, or against you." Joey finishes.

Chris has been pacing amidst all the discussion, staying along the wall at the back of the room. There's a little more... slink to her movements. She's wearing sunglasses, and her eyes seem to be bothering her.

She seems impressed by the rant Rose pulls out, and at how collected Joey's staying. She finally pads her way towards the front of the room, going barefoot as her toes seem to be gripping a bit more with each step.

"I'm not as good with the speeches as the others, Cyclops, so I'll make it simple for you." She looks up at him, stopping right in front of the adult.

"We need some time to lick our wounds and get our heads back on, no doubt, but if you think you can stand there, after you just got PWNED yourself, and tell us to stop doing what we do, to stop doing what we can do..." She pulls off the glasses, bright green feline eyes gazing back at him. "--then you don't know the first thing about us."

She turns her back to him and puts the glasses back on as she gives out a loud but composed thought to the rest of the group, those who can hear it.

//If he won't let us do what we can do, then we'll pack up and do it from somewhere else.// A hint of a smirk comes through, mentally.

Anastasia turned to look at Rose, a little hurt. "I can't believe you don't trust me," she said, "For the record, you should know something- I haven't been 'reporting back to Daddy'. I'm on this team because I WANT to be, not because my father put me on here to keep an eye on all of you. I'm not your policeman, and frankly, I'm a little disgusted that you'd think I'd just be some goodie-two shoes and side with my father on this. You know me better than this, Rose."

She folded her arms and looked her father straight in the eyes. "I'm staying with my teammates. If you think you can just shut us down, well, then you've got another think coming. We don't just sit on the sidelines."

Well. That had been... unexpected. Mostly. Rose he had expected that kind of reaction from. Some of the others, not so much. Scott slowly picked himself up off the floor, trying to quell his own anger. It wouldn't do him any good, and the team was already reacting poorly to them.

"You're all taking time off, regardless," he said. "We need to determine the extent of what happened to you. You'll continue to see Doctors McCoy for regular check-ups and tests, and possibly Dr. MacTaggert as well if we can arrange for her to be out here.

Once you have a clean bill of health, we will discuss--together, what we need to do to continue going forward with this team. I'm asking you all to at least wait that long."

Leave it to her boyfriend to be the sensible one. "He makes a point, Summers."

"I didn't think ya'd actually do it, Annie," Rose protested. "Just that that's why he put ya here with us rebels."

"What the flamin' heck?!" Rose shouted, as Tina popped claws of her own. It cut off anything else she had to say to Summers.

Joey has no idea what's going on, but Rose's curse tells him it's pretty major. He's not going to freak out, but he is going to try to get Rose's attention.

"Rose, we need to talk." Joey says, rising from his chair, and tapping his walking stick around so he doesn't run into anything.

"We could use the rest time, Summers. I guess we'll see you when we see you, then." Joey says.

Chris' eyes narrow, still feline, as she observes the change with Tina. "Yeah..... this is all pretty screwed up right now is all I can say." She curls back her upper lip, revealing the fangs again, pointing a finger at them.

"These keep coming and going. Claws sometimes too, even without the fur and other usual changes."

And I'm doing everything I can not to freak out right now. God knows what the x-gene stuff is going to do ON TOP of all the other ways I'm screwed up...

Cyclops is pretty much furniture so far as she cares right now. Her teammates, and more importantly friends, are pretty much run through the wringer.

"You do continue to be full of surprises, Ms. Frost," Hank said, as he looked over the diagnostic readings he'd taken. The med-lab was a bit crowded at the moment, since the other X-Force members had refused to leave for this round of tests.

"Despite being made of diamond, the claws bear a remarkable similarity in structure to those of Ms. Logan. More so than I am comfortable saying is a coincidence. Your test readings are also... anomalous. They do not stay consistent from one test to next, with much greater deviation than would be expected."

He looked them all over. "All of your test readings are unusual, to say the least. You're all still changing, save, perhaps, for Ms. Logan. Her readings remain largely the same... though I would like to run more tests, on all of you. And Ms. Pym, I would like to speak to you privately, when you have a moment."

Chris furrows her brow behind her sunglasses, chewing on a nail. She hasn't quite figured out how to make the changes happen, but besides her eyes, she's managed to make them not happen, for now.

Once Joey understood what was happening with Tina, he followed he rest of the team back to the infirmary to get an update. If Tina was sprouting claws like Rose now, in addition to whatever extra craziness she picked up from Providence, things were going to get very interesting around here.

As far as anyone knows, Joey can't see. Doctor McCoy knows that that's not the whole story, but Joey doesn't want to go into it further until after he has a chance to speak with Rose.

"You don't plan on lockin' us in here, do ya, Doc? No offense, but I hate hospitals, infirmaries, and all that. Aside from it...I got plans." Joey says.

He hoped that Cassidy came through on the favor he asked for.
