Some People Call Me a Space Cowboy
The call went out for the members of X-Force to assemble in the briefing room as soon as possible. When they arrive, they'll find that it is Scott Summers, rather than the Professor, running this meeting. He looks grim, even by Scott Summers standards.

"Oh, of course I don't give a shit about him. I mean, I only helped save his life at risk to my own, which happened after he blew my girlfriend, you and all of us nearly sky fucking high!" Joey snaps.

"Oh, and if we don't count the three-thousand some-odd people who ate it because of him...poor Jake didn't have an healing factor and he gave a damn about Cassidy. So don't sit here and pretend like you're the only person making sacrifices on that kid's behalf." Joey says.

"A lot of other people are keepin' their mouths shut so he can stay."

"Hey."

The room is suddenly near filled with cat-beast, looming over the others.

"Cool it. All of you. Bitching like little kids and turning on each other isn't going to bring back anyone that was lost, and as much as I'd LOVE to take it out on someone right now, it's not what we do."

Chris shrinks back down and sits in her chair, daring anyone to continue.

"You were saying, boss?" She looks to Cyclops.

Scott pinched the bridge of his nose, fighting off the headache he knew was coming. Ah, the good old days when Logan was making an ass of himself and Gambit was being sleazy and Jubilee was sticking up for Logan and...

He shook his head. "Thank-you, Chris.

"Now, I know this team has been through some rather... traumatic experiences on their last two outings. But this mission is simple recon and intelligence gathering."

He pushed a button, bringing up a map that showed a smallish island, the buildings of which had a decidedly futuristic bent.

"This is Providence. Home to slightly under a thousand people, from all corners of the world, it was designed as a kind of all-purpose think tank for scientific advancements and world improvements. Responsible for its creation and head of state, as it were, is this man."

The picture shifted to a white-haired man with a scar around one eye. "Nathan Charles Christopher Dayspring Summers Askani'son. More commonly known to the outside world as Cable. My son, and brother to both Rose and Anastasia. Beyond that... it's severely complicated. But he's both a powerful telepath and telekinetic. He has access to future technology and has alternately been viewed as a messiah and a terrorist.

"Twenty-four hours ago, scientists living and working on Providence announced they had created a way to implant and trigger the x-gene in nonmutants."

"That isn't good. Anyone who wants mutant powers just bein' able to get them is a recipe for disaster." Joey says, considering the implications.

He also considers the implications of Rose and Ana-Pants having to go against their own brother, and this whole mission sounds like it's one move away from being a bust.

"I'm seeing some issues in the planning of this. Rose, how well do you know this guy?" Joey asks.

"Best way to think of Nate is probably 'well-intentioned fascist', since he set up shop with his own country. He's going to be keeping his thumb on top of any kind of mutant 'pill'." She looks to Scott.

"Any proof that it works so far? I mean, MGH has been on the streets for ages, and there all kinds of ways to kick on super-powers outside the X-gene. I'm living proof."

"No proof so far," Scott said, "but I doubt Nathan would be letting anything out newswise if it wasn't."

"Our fears," he went on, "are two fold. The first is that Nathan might attempt to force this on the world's population in some fashion, in an attempt to break down the barriers between humans and mutants. He's done similar things before.

"The other fear, of course, is that if they've found a trigger for mutant, they might be able to reverse engineer it into a counter-mutagenic agent."

"At present," Scott replied, "we're just looking to ascertain the situation. This is a recon and data collection mission. Christina's technopathetic abilities should come in particularly handy for this. We're also looking to simply collect information of the general reactions of the Providence population itself to the situation.

"Cable has adopted a policy that no one is to be turned away, if they're genuinely interested in Providence and its mission of creating a better society. We are currently creating false identities for all of you that should allow for smooth insertion."

	Tina frowned and then looked at Scott. The exchange of information was brief, but clear. Scott Summers would have few questions about just what Christina Frost did growing up as a child of Hellfire. Credit to Scott in that he didn't allow his expression to change. He nodded slightly. He mentally revised his opinion of Christina up several notches.

"All right, you'll be in overall command for this mission then. We'll get you briefed on specific geography of Providence before you leave. Joey will be inserted first, and we'll break the rest of you into two insertion groups with the other immigrants."

"Now, hopefully, you won't encounter any of these individuals, but if you do, I want you to be prepared."

The first slide showed a brown-haired woman with glasses. "This is Irene Merryweather. She's Cable's de facto chief of staff and handles a lot of the day to day running of Providence. No super-human abilities, but she's a long time associate of Cable's, which is saying something."

The next showed a woman with white skin, a black circle around one eye. "Domino, sometime lover of Cable and member of the previous incarnation of X-Force that Cable ran. Skilled fighter and marksman, with probability altering abilities. It's unknown if she's currently on Providence, but she has functioned as Cable's head of security before."

The next was an Indian man. "Garabed Bashur, also known as Commcast or Black Box. A high level mutant with the ability to receive and analyze electronic signals. He functions as Cable's eyes and ears to the outside world and as part of the security of Providence itself."

Another slide, showing a large, red-haired and bearded man. "Prester John. Time-tossed one-time guardian of a mystic artifact called the Evil Eye, which he has replaced with a similar weapon called the Stellar Rod. Functions as the head of the multi-religious services, but will engage in combat if necessary."

For a moment, Scott seemed to hesitate, and went on to the last slide, showing a red-haired teenage girl. "Data on this one is sketchy, but reports identify her as Hope Summers. Origin unknown, but she appeared with Cable one day and is reportedly his daughter, though we cannot confirm if this is biological or not. Unknown if she possesses any mutant abilities, but she does appear to possess combat training."

"With any luck, however, you won't need to worry about any of that. Cerebro can't monitor Providence, so we won't be able to monitor you or perform an extraction if things go poorly. I am confident, however, in your abilities to improvise as necessary."

Tina nodded.

"We need to be careful, Chris. If we go in asking for too much or too many questions we'll instantly be pegged as spies. That could get us all killed."

Tina passed no judgment on what Chris was asking. She was more concerned with the semi-carlessness of the idea that they could present things in such a light. She put it away, though, and unless stopped would head out so that she could get organized, both for her briefing and for the mission itself.
