Skeletons (Family Secrets, part 1).
Disguises were easy.

So was convincing people that they were seeing and hearing what you wanted them to see and hear.  Easy if your last name was Frost at least.  From her outpost in the black Mercedes with the tinted glass Kassia had no trouble seeing to it that Marrina got into the building with unfettered access to everything that lay beyond the security desk.  The building was empty of people, of course.  An attack of what some idiot news source tried to term economic terrorism had left the building closed for business but there was still a treasure trove of information on the inside.  Kassia was interested in two things: confirmation that her sister, Tina, wasn't inside and whatever suspicious devices and odd evidence might be there.

They bought it, Marrina.  You have complete access.  I suggest heading to the damage zone first and telling me what you see.  Or rather, thinking it.  I can hear you clear as day.

Her sister wanted a cheeseburger.  That she could hear clearly, too.  Kassia sighed, realizing there was a trip to a fast food place in her future.

A wig had disguised her extremely distinctive hair and contacts had transformed her too-dark eyes into a more acceptable color. Her ankle wings were hidden (surprisingly comfortably) by a pair of boots Kassia had provided. A little bit of make-up, carefully done, had made taken care of the rest. No one would recognize Mary Lanis as Princess Marrina McKenzie of Atlantis.

Got it, Kassi, she replied.

She did feel at least a little apologetic about the cheeseburger. But unlike her sister, she was not much of a vegetarian.

Kassia had given her the layout of the building and she carefully worked her way toward the damage zone. Only an act of will kept her from gasping. She'd known it was bad, but she hadn't expected...

What are you seeing? I'm presently distracting the guard down the hall from you so I can't exactly see what you're seeing. Is it bad?

Wow, the guard had some weird thoughts...

It's bad. Way bad. Looks like a bomb went off.

Most of it was still scorched and burned, if not outright incinerated. Other damage had come from other parts of the building, loosened by the explosion, coming crashing down. With the level of damage, it was hard to tell what was what, exactly.

Something shiny caught her eye. Hang on... I might be seeing something.

Tell me it's not a body.

That was the most important thing for Kassia. Evidence of treachery was second to that.

It's not.

She stopped for a moment, shifting into some shark power briefly, specifically it's sense of smell. A shark could smell blood in the water from miles away, after all.

She reeled a moment from the intensity of it, but worked past it. There were people smells, but she wasn't certain it was the smell of death.

What she had been looking at, however, was a small piece of metal. One side looked like it had the remains of a circuit board on it.

Some kind of tech piece...?

Bag it. I know someone who can trace tech. Everything has a fingerprint and a paper trail. Is it close to the center of the blast zone or further out? If you can get close, check for bits of timing devices or fuses. Possibly even cell phone parts.

No bodies. Which meant Tina hadn't been there. Relief washed over her. That was, at least, a start.

She bagged the piece of it. Further out. Was kinda embedded in the floor though, might have been blown there. I'm going to get closer.

She stepped further into the damage, briefly worried about getting caught, but deciding simply to trust her sister. She spotted something, half hidden by rubble. With a bit of careful application of her strength, she was able to remove it.

Definite timing device

Okay. Get a photograph of the blast zone and then get out of there. Use the west door and then walk one block north. I will pick you up at the intersection there. Move quickly.

One of her mother's more...gifted employees was approaching the building. She'd have a hard time with him.

On it. Marrina snapped the picture quickly, making certain she had as much of it in the frame as she could get.

Once she had that, she headed out the door, walking briskly, but not hurriedly. She had somewhere to go, not something she was running from.

Kassia maneuvered the car to the exact point Marrina was supposed to meet her at and made it in perfect time, pulling up to the intersection just as Marrina rounded the corner.

"Did anyone follow you?"

She shook her head as she got in the car.

"Nope. I was throwing out sonar signals while I was walking. Nobody even came close."

"Fantastic. We need to get these things back to the hotel and start processing them. I think I might know someone who can help us trace the origins.

"Thank you, by the way, for doing that."

"No problem," Marrina said. "What are sisters for?"

"You've got a guy for that kind of thing?" she marveled. "I wouldn't even know where to get a guy like that."

"I...have a guy for a lot of stuff. My mom was in a long-term relationship with Sebastian Shaw for most of my life. That man has more dark connections than bad electrical wiring."

Kassia certainly understood the shadier side of things better than Marrina did. And in all honesty, it would probably make her a better ruler than she'd ever be. She'd been raised by a fisherman and his wife and the only subterfuge she was familiar with had been the occasional lie to them.

"Long as it works, I guess that's the important part."

"Yeah."

She was quiet a moment.

"Did anything in there look Atlantean to you?"

She shook her head. "No. Nothing at all."

Proof of their father's innocence? Or just a need to dig deeper? She wasn't sure of much right now.

"Okay. Then I'll make some calls and get these things looked at. Maybe Dad's not behind this, but I want to be sure. You going to be okay at the hotel by yourself for a bit?"

We can only hope he isn't, she thought.

"I'll be fine. You sure you'll be okay on your own?"

"Yeah. I'll be fine."

She was bluffing. Truth was she wasn't certain if she'd be able to handle this on her own or not.

Marrina wasn't entirely sure she believed her sister, but she also didn't see much choice in the matter. Whoever it was she was going to see would probably only trust Kassi.

"All right," she said. "Just... be careful."
