Meeting the Locals
After a few hours of waiting for the effects of the mead and wine from previous night's drinking to wear off, Svalin led the others down to the village. Tryggvi had a blanket over him to hide his wings and the other horse walked next to him. A part of Svalin wished her brother were here to deal with the chieftain. A male who understood the customs would make things a lot easier, but seeing how Halbjorn was not here she was going to have to do it.

Svalin was quiet and pensive as they entered the village. Her sword and shield were ready in the event she needed to use them. Which was very likely.

They were immediately surrounded by warriors, all with drawn swords and shields at the ready. Svalin put up a hand for the Avengers to not draw weapons or move. It was a delicate situation and one she didn't need to get quickly out of hand.

"We hath come to speak to thine chieftain," she said as she sized up the warriors all around them.

"Well met, Eli, but I beg thee to call me Svalin." She offered him a small smile. "Thank thee, Eli. How fares thee?"

"I am well, though I worry for tomorrow. These people did not ask for this battle, yet they will fight it to the death, and would have even if we had not shown up. Their courage is inspiring, even if they know they cannot win." Eli says.

"However, we are here to turn the tide. How are you, Svalin? You've said relatively little about yourself since all of this began and now you're watching the walls. Will you not rest some before light comes? Let Iason and I keep watch while you do whatever you need to do to prepare before the battle." he implores.

"It ist their way. They wilt fight to protect their families and for their survival, no matter the forces they face. E'en when there ist little hope for victory. It ist the same in Asgard. We wilt fight Ragnarok though we canst only hope to win."

Svalin looked out into the darkness. She didn't need rest and she didn't want to sleep anyway. The dream she had been having since they started this adventure disturbed her and she would rather not sleep unless she had to. "I art fine and ready for battle." She shook her head. "Asgardians doth not require much rest. I wilt be fine."

A pause.

"Thank thee for thy concern."

"You do not need to thank me for being concerned for a friend, Svalin. The Eternals and the Asgardians have many things in common, I have noticed. Sometimes, it is nice to know that there are others who can understand the...issues that come with long-life." he says.

"If you say you will be fine, then I will not press the issue, Svalin. But I do urge you to take a bit of time for yourself, before the battle...unless I have managed to intrude on you doing just that?"

"Aye, our peoples have oft been allies. Father oft spoke of the Eternals and what they have done for Migard."

Svalin nodded. "Aye. It can be difficult to get mortals to understand an outlook that takes a longer perspective on things. It ist nice to know that I wilt not lose all mine friends to time and age."

"I art doing what ist necessary. The mortals need rest and a watch must be kept."

"My father is loathe to tout anyone's accomplishments but his own...but he has admitted that the Asgardians have aided us in the past. I think doing that much cost him a bit of pride." Eli smiles.

"I feel the same, Svalin. I have learned a great deal about the world since I left Polaria, but I am saddened to know that much of it will change in a short time. And most of the friends I have made will be gone.

I take comfort in knowing that my cousins will be with me, as well as my family. And now, a new friend as well." Eli smiles.

"I will keep watch with you, then, if you don't mind. I need no sleep, either, and the company is nice." he says.

"I doth know the type," she said. She smiled. "Aye. It ist nice to know people who wilt be around for a long time. It ist nice to have new friends as well."

She nodded. "Aye. I wouldst not mind having pleasant company."

"Well, in absence of pleasant company, a sometimes-brooding Russian will have to do." Eli jokes, smiling.

"How have you enjoyed your time in Midgard, before now?" he asks, using the term she was most familiar with.

"Thou'rt most pleasant company, Eli," she assured him. "I art glad thou art here."

"It wast most interesting. The Defenders have had many interesting adventures. It hath been a most challenging time so far."
