Everything Else Disappears
Anya yawned and stretched lazily as she lay naked against Steve. Right now the world was absolutely perfect and nothing except the man laying next to her existed. Everything else disappeared and nothing could destroy this perfect moment. Nothing until she told her boyfriend about her plans. She yawned again. Sleep threatened to take her. Her stomach was full of really good food and she was coming down off the adrenaline high. She was enjoying basking in the afterglow.

Saturdays and Sundays had been set aside for time with Steve. With her working at the company during the week and him in school, there was little time to see each other. Saturdays and Sundays were spent with her boyfriend provided the world wasn't going to hell and the Avengers weren't needed. Since Anya returned to the Avengers, things had been quiet which meant time for other things. Like trying to find the best burger and finding a bed and breakfast for the evening.

Anya and Steve had made the drive to Rhode Island to check out this one burger place Anya had heard about. Lunch had been fantastic and worth the three hour drive and speeding ticket, but seeing how they were already that far north, Anya decided to head east to Cape Cod. From Falmouth they took the ferry over to Martha's Vineyard. Being the off season, there were rooms at the local bed and breakfasts even though they could have gone to the Stark house on the island. It had been closed for some time and staying there would have meant effort to stay there for the night.

She yawned again. She had meant to tell Steve about her idea about a team in the car, but it had never seemed the right time. Not that there would be a right time, but there was also the concern about ruining the day. She had to tell him and she had to do it before she was in the car and ready to go.

Fingertips trailed lightly over his chest and she smiled into his neck. He was a great guy and she knew she was the luckiest girl in the world to have him. She just hoped she wasn't destroying a great thing. A light kiss was dropped onto salty skin.

"I love you," she said quietly.

As far as Steve was concerned, life was pretty damned good. Which was both comforting and worrying. He had a super-brilliant, super-wonderful, super-rich girlfriend who he loved with all his heart and for some reason seemed to love him just as much, when he wasn't any of those things.

He was--kind of--leading the Avengers, which was what he'd wanted to do all his life. And had somehow managed to stay a member in good standing despite having no super-powers to speak of, and even being largely outclassed in the fighting department by super-soldiers and the like.

He was... Well, he was his own worst enemy.

But right now? He could totally push those thoughts aside for the beautiful redhead next to him. "Love you too, Gorgeous," he told her.

Anya smiled and then propped herself up on an elbow so she could see his face. Her chest tightened a bit, just like it did every time she looked at him. Each time she looked at him it felt like she was falling.

"I could just stay here forever like this. You, me and nothing else in the world." In a world so full of troubles they had seen enough and they were still young. There would be much more to come, but tonight those troubles could wait until tomorrow when the sun came up.

Steve smiled. He didn't know what the future held, but he knew he liked right now one hell of a lot.

"I approve of that plan whole-heartedly," he told her.

"I really wish it could be like that," she said with a hint of regret in her voice. "But school starts for me soon and you have Avenger stuff this summer."

Something in that pierced the otherwise happy fog surrounding Steve's brain. "Wait. You mean we have Avengers stuff. You're back on the team. And you have a super-sonic suit for commuting."

Anya sighed and looked away for a moment. "Yes, I am an Avenger again, that much is right." She kissed him lightly on his mouth. "I saw Temujin a little while ago. I know I shouldn't have done it, but it was sort of like getting some closure to all of it. While I was there I couldn't help but to think what could have happened if someone had given him a chance to get away from the legacy of his father. With my own not so spotless record, well I had an idea to start a team. One where people could get a second chance and one where they can escape family legacies."

She looked away again.

Well. This was a direction he hadn't expected the conversation to go.

"Guy like him," he began, "he'd have been a bastard no matter what. Maybe not a psychotic super-villain, but he was a bad seed, plain and simple.

"And your record is spotless. Mind-control. Doesn't count. ...Even if you think it does. Which doesn't mean I'm trying to disregard your feelings here."

He paused for a moment. "And you've probably already got this worked out to the point where you just have to write a couple checks and it will happen."

She looked at him.

"Mind control isn't a get out of jail free card. It doesn't take away the memories of what I've done and the guilt that goes along with them. I know it's not my fault and it's irrational, but I can't just ignore it. The Avengers gave your father and my mother second chances. Others deserve second chances as well and not everyone can be an Avenger. I'm going to be there for school anyway, might as well do some good while I'm at it."

"I will be home on weekends unless the world is ending. Promise."

Steve knew that she had a point. He didn't expect her guilt to just go away, though she had nothing to feel guilty about. He'd been helping her work through that enough to know that much at least.

And she was probably right about people needing second chances.

But it did raise the question, to his mind anyway, about why did it have to be her doing it? Steve understood about stepping up, about taking responsibility, but Anya sometimes... tried to take too much on. He'd seen this time and time again with her, especially where the company had been involved. She wanted to do everything, save everyone. Most of the time, he found it admirable, endearing, if puzzling.

"This means a lot to you," he said. It wasn't a question. "Then it means a lot to me too."

"It does mean a lot to me," she said. She was a Stark. Sure she could sit back and live off the family name and money, but she wouldn't be who she was if she did. Her parents, both of them, had taught her about responsibility and working for things. She could have anything and everything she wanted, but she liked working for things. Unfortunately they also taught her about being a workaholic and being obsessive about things. The good along with the not so good.

"You, of course, are more than welcome to join the team." She had to offer, but she knew he wouldn't accept. Being an Avenger was as much as part of Steve as being a workaholic was as much as part of her. She also wanted Steve to be able to do his own thing and not have to do something just because of her.

Steve's parents taught him about responsibility and working for things too. But they also taught him that you couldn't do everything, that you had to pick and chose what battles you fought. And more importantly, that you shouldn't try to do everything, that you had to understand your limits, even in trying to go beyond them.

"I can't," he said, in response to the offer. "Short of your brother, there's nobody else to really hold the team together, nbody with the history or investment in it. And I promised Charlie I'd make sure there was an Avengers for them to come back to."

He stroked her cheek, then kissed her. "Can't imagine what it was like, me off Avenging and you being left behind. But I know I'm gonna worry about you, since I'm not gonna be there to watch your back. Just promise me you'll be careful."

"I know and I understand. I had to offer. I don't want you to think you're not welcome."

She smiled when he stroked her cheek and leaned into the touch. "It was hard. You know me, I'm not one to sit on the sidelines while others get to do the butt kicking or anything else for that matter. I blame both my parents."

"I will try to be careful. I give you my word. Because I know if I don't you and Toni will come up and kick my butt."

She kissed him.

"I love you." She loved him with all of her heart and wanted to be with him, but at the same time she had to be her own person and do her own things. "Thank you, my love. For being so wonderful and understanding."

Steve savored the kiss for a long moment. This was important to Anya, he knew, something to make help her work through her own issues in a way he couldn't. He thought he understood, but he couldn't, he realized, begin to fully comprehend all she had been through.

And realistically? Using a high tech suit of armor for that kind of commute was unrealistic, and a bit of a waste of the technology.

Their relationship has survived this much. Being on different teams wouldn't be a challenge. And few couple actually worked together anyway, in the so-called "real world."

"Love you, Gorgeous."

Anya smiled and dropped a few kisses on his mouth. They would make it work. Anya couldn't be any more sure of it. She loved him too much to let a little distance come between them.

"Now that the serious stuff is over," she said with a smile and gleam in her eye. "What would you like for a graduation gift and would you like to do anything special?" Oh yes, she had ideas, but she wanted to see if he had any ideas.

"I will be there. Nothing short of the end of the world will keep me from being there," she said and sealed the promise with a kiss. She knew one thing she was getting him, she just had to make the arrangements. Which would mean Pepper or Dad pulling some strings.

She smiled. "It's a plan. I'll book a suite at Atlantis for us." She smiled and placed a kiss on his chin. Then she started to slide down his body, dropping kisses as she went. "Ready for round two? Or are we on round three?"

Her mouth moved lower and lower down his body.
