Lunchtime
Melinda remains distant from her classmates, for the most part. Truth be told, she doesn't really feel like she deserves to be here with them. She knows rationally it's nonsense to feel that way, but she can't help it.

So it is that, once again, at lunchtime, she sits outside, away from the others, watching the fountain while she eats her sandwich.

She shrugs. "They were assholes. I was better off without them, and met good friends who didn't care."

Jake nods and says nothing more on the subject. After a moment he gives into curiosity. "I am sorry for asking but...what is it that you do? Your...mutant gift?"

She gets quiet for a moment. "Um... I can turn into glass. And control the pieces when I break," she explains.

Jake jumps slightly and his eyes go wide. "Wow," he smiles. "That's an amazing ability. Does...breaking hurt?"

She tilts her head. "Not really, no. It feels kinda strange, but it doesn't really hurt." She sighs. "But... that's why Apocalypse wanted me." She winces internally, expecting him to find a reason to excuse himself now. And he was cute, too...

Jake gasps. That name he recognizes. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that..." he trails off, thinking any experience involving En Sabba Nurr would be a bad one.

Eventually, she gathers her lunch. "I'm sorry," she says. "I'll go."

She looks at him. "Jake... I don't want to make you uncomfortable by sitting here. I'm sorry. I'll let you have some peace and quiet."

Jake blinks a few times then smiles. "You were not making me uncomfortable," he says honestly. "Please, sit and enjoy your lunch and this nice day."

She stops, and looks at him. A cute guy, asking her to stay there, even after finding out what she did.

She takes a deep breath. "Okay. If you're sure." She starts to get her sandwich back out. "Thanks..."

"So which class program are you in?" she asks. "You in the college program?"
