Study break (open to Defenders)
Grace was sitting cross-legged on the living room floor of the Defender's compound, facing the greatest foe that a high-school senior could ever go up against.

Trigonometry homework.

Grace scratched the back of her with her pencil. She should've taken stats for her senior math course. But nope, she let Mom and the guidance counselor at her old high school convince her that trig was the better choice.

There we go....five problems down...and twenty-five more to go.

"I'm never going to get this done...." Grace glanced down at her book, looking down at the problems in front of her.

"Get what done?" asked a vague voice behind her.

Grace turned her head over her shoulder. "Hey Marlow." she sighed, gesturing to her math book. "Trig homework. The plague of all high-school seniors."

"I've heard about high school. It didn't sound very useful." Marlow's education had all been in the Dark Dimension. She was well educated in any subject related to magic but trig was a word she didn't know. "Would you care for tea? Sydney drinks tea when she's reading one of her books. It seems to help."

Grace laughed. "It's not all that bad. Math just isn't my strongest subject." Grace nodded. "That would very nice, thank you."

"It will be here in a moment," Marlow said. She peered again at the page. "This will help you in your life?"

"I don't think I'm ever going to use trigonometry after high school, but it'll help me graduate."

Marlow nodded, still not sure why anyone would study a subject that wouldn't be useful. "I didn't go to school."

Grace tilted her head to one side. "That's right. Syd said that you grew up in the Dark Dimension?"

Marlow gave her a sweet smile and dissolved in a shower of pinpoint lights that swirled around Grace before fading away.

Another Marlow entered with a tray containing a small steaming teapot and a cup. "I did. I have no memories before Clea and the Dark Dimension."

Grace blinked. Yeah...she was still getting used to living with a sorceress.

"What was it like, living there?"

Marlow set the tray down and poured the first cup for Grace while she considered her answer. "A lot like living here. Magic users from many dimensions come and go through the Dark Dimension, some nearly as powerful as gods. I was instructed on all aspects of magic and expected to learn from everyone who came to Clea."

Grace nodded her thanks as took the steaming cup of tea from the tray, taking a sip. "Wow. I can't even begin to imagine what that's like. It sounds interesting." She took a sip of her tea.

He comes into the kitchen looking for a popcorn refill. "Hello, ladies." He notices the books. "Trig?"

Grace looked up at him and gave him a smile. "Hi Dad," she looked back down at her trig book. "Yuuup. Going to be the death of me."
