Getting down to the heart of the matter
May had hopped on the first subway to Queens that morning.

She was tired of hiding the truth from her parents. She was tired of just breaking up muggings, knowing that there was more that she could do with the powers that she had inherited.

She was going to tell her parents about Spider-Girl today. And she was going to tell that she fully intended on staying as her, even if they didn't want her to. May had a gift, and she wanted to use it to help people.

Just like her Dad did.

She'd called them earlier to tell that she wanted to talk about something. Something important.

When she arrived at home, May took a deep breath before ringing the doorbell.

Here goes nothing...

MJ answered the door. She smiled when she saw her daughter. "Hey there honey," she said, giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek before she let her step inside. "I was wondering when you'd get here."

"Hi Mom," May said, giving her mother a kiss on the cheek. "I would have called and asked to be picked up, but I just felt like walking." Lord knows she needed more time to figure what she was going to say. "Is Dad around?"

"He's in the kitchen." MJ put an arm around May's waist. "You hungry?"

May nodded. "Yeah. A little. I didn't get a chance to eat anything before I left this morning." She walked with her mother into the kitchen. "We can eat breakfast why we talk."

“Hey Maybell,” Peter said when May and MJ walked inside the kitchen. He came over to his little girl and gave her a hug. “You said you wanted to talk about something.” He was unsure of what to think when May had called him and MJ up asking to talk to them about something important.

"Hi Dad," she returned the hug, giving her father a peck on the cheek. "Yeah." She looked up at both of her parents. "You both may want to sit down."

“Ok sweetie,” he said a little bit concerned about what she was going to tell them. Peter returned to the chair he had been sitting at and turned it so that he could face May.

MJ took a seat at the kitchen table. "What's on you mind, honey?" She gave May a concerned glance. "Is everything at school going alright?"

"School's going great, Mom." May remained standing. There was a pause. She inhaled, clearing her head before she spoke again.

May took off her sweater, revealing the top of her Spider-Girl costume underneath.

"I've been lying to you both. I know, you said that you didn't want me using my powers and going out to fight crime, like Dad did. I know that you wanted me to focus on school. And I have been- my grades are just fine." She exhaled, then inhaled again. "I've been sneaking out after gymnastics practice to go on patrols in the areas around campus. Nothing too big...just muggings and stuff like that." Another pause. "But I want to help out more. I know the risks, but I still want to help."

“Absolutely not, May Katherine Parker. How could you do this when we specifically asked you not to do that,” Peter says ranting angrily, “I mean I understand why you want to do this but do you understand how dangerous that is, the risks you are taking. I’m very disappointed in you May.”

MJ put on hand on her husband's arm. "Peter," she said, giving him a stern look. "Your father is right May. You deliberately disobeyed us."

May sighed, not moving her eyes from her parents' stern faces. "I know I did. But I have this...this amazing gift that I've inherited," she said, "A gift that you used to help people, Dad. I'm just doing the exact same thing with mine. I know the risks. I'm not just doing this because I'm a glory-hound. I want to help people."

She paused.

"'With great power comes great responsibility'. You told me that, Dad. And that's what I intend to do."

With May’s words something happen that didn’t happen very often something that villains had been trying to find a way to do since Peter first started fighting crime to when he retired unsuccessfully. Peter Parker was struck speechless unable to say anything.

He just sat there staring at his daughter, he didn’t know what to say, she was right and he did not have any high ground to tell her otherwise.

MJ took a sip of the mug of coffee that she had in front of her.

While she had fully supported Peter as Spider-Man, there wasn't a day that she hadn't worried about him when he was out on a patrol, or away helping out another member of the hero community. A part of her had been glad when her husband retired when May was a baby. A small part of her had always hoped that May wouldn't inherit her father's abilities, so she wouldn't have to worry about her daughter going down the same path as Peter did.

Still, there is the hint of a smirk on her face at her husband speechless.

The silence was making May feel just the slightest bit uncomfortable.

"Well?" she said, smiling sheepishly at her parents, "Do you understand. I have to do this."

As he came back to his senses he had to admit she was good a real chip off the old block. While he knew he couldn’t stop her from doing this, at least he could try to make her as safe as possible.

“Well if you are really set on doing this May then I think we should set some ground rules ok,” Peter says calmly.

MJ nodded. "I agree. Though you may not be living under our roof, you're still a minor."

“Well for starters if you ever find yourself in over your head, call for help,” Peter says matter-of-factly before saying some more logical and commonsense rules.
