Tired, poor huddled masses
A hard looking kid dressed in a new fancy-name jacket held up a corner of the building opposite from the one Jack crouched on. Five stories up, Jack could see his silhouette pretty well from the lone street light halfway down the block. The kid, and the four menacing figures ranged around him in doorways of rundown brick buildings, were ‘taking care of business‘. Even the cold couldn’t put a damper on the need to score that last hit. Cars made a slow but steady cash flow trickle as Jack watched them ease to a stop at the corner. A few seconds to exchange tiny baggies for folded paper, and then back to lean against something and wait for the next.

He scanned the gloomy black of the neighborhood. It was a narrow cut of a street through three blocks of extreme poverty. All late 1800s brownstones converted into tiny apartments in the Depression, and in such disrepair that it would take more to renovate than any developer would consider, especially in this area. It would be more profitable to tear down and rebuild. This had once been an exclusive enclave of the rich and snobbish. Now there were shattered columns and smoke stains. Boarded up windows. Rats running through the walls. Plumbing that was closer to outhouses than usable bathrooms. Inside were marble walls and floors, cracked and stained. Ceilings low from water bloat and mold. Maybe it was kinder to get the people out of here but first they needed some place to go.

A round of eviction notices were still tacked up on many of the doors, but Jack figured it wouldn’t be enough. He noticed them on his first visit, and out of curiosity tracked down the owners through public records. All three blocks were bought at HUD sales over the last five years by two development companies, despite the companies’ history of housing code violations.

And that was probably what had brought him back the last three nights. There was something in the air along with the human stench and damp. It made his skin itchy. There were more tough looking guys on the street this week. He’d heard about eviction gangs that cleared buildings. Not always legal, but the legal system moved so slowly and it took only one well placed wrecking ball to bring down a structure. People with nowhere to go were notoriously hard to get rid of by shady landlords.

As he crouched in the deeper shadow of the roof, he heard yelling from the floor below.

Michlos along with four local thugs that his employer had hired were heading to the building to stop the Kingpins men from kicking the residents out by whatever means necessary. The only conditions she had made were that the residents be hurt as little as possible and they could not be caught by heroes, police, Kingpin’s men or anyone else. Should be a simple enough job, especially since they had the element of surprise and he wouldn’t let himself be captured anyways with the warrants he had on him from his former job with the Russian mafia.

He and his men were just outside the doors of the building when a scream came from within it. At that moment he and his men rushed into action.

Shriek found that issuing telepathic commands to the thugs hired for the night easy. They were already primed to cause violence. A tiny little telepathic push was all that needed and then they were forcibly invading apartments in the most occupied building on the street. Maximum damage would send a message to the rest of the area.

The screams were almost as good as the ones she could cause with her psychic scream.

Until the do-gooders showed up. From above and below, there were suddenly people around that didn't belong and promised to ruin the party.

Jack swung himself down to the window sill and peered inside. He saw the apartment's residents, an old woman with two young children, try to push a shelf in front of the door. The door crashed in and Jack didn't pause to bother opening the window. He rammed it with his fist clutching the weighted billy club, and tumbled inside to land on his feet, ready to fight.

Leo got himself out of his car as fast as he could and rushed towards the nearest entrance. The screaming sounded bad as he entered the building, and taking the stairs he made his way towards the nearest source of screaming. He had his gun held in one hand as he ran.

Abigail was running toward the source of the screams as well, and managed to get in the building b the time Leo was up the first flight of stairs.

"Not good," she muttered to herself, a Colt at the ready.

Michlos and his men were already in the building before the others even had time to react. Michlos then split his men up into two teams of two to attempt to stop the various attacks while he attempted to help out as well by himself. They would probaly would reach the attacks before most of the others.

Shriek instructed most of her men to meet the others head on while she continued causing trouble. However this ended, it would make an impression on the rest of the street. If someone was killed, so much the better.

Jack tumbled in and launched himself at the men in the doorway. It didn't register at first that they were fighting each other.

When Leo finally reached the source of screaming he was chasing after he found a brawling going on. He couldn’t tell which side was which or what could have caused this.

Rather than get involved with the fight just yet Leo started looking for a fresh blood stain so that he might be able to find out the cause of this fight and take out whoever was the bad guys. Once he found a suitable blood stain he took off one of his gloves and started waiting for a go moment to run and read it.

Abigail made it moments later.

"...What in tarnation did I stumble onto?" she muttered. Who the heck were all these people and, more importantly, who did she shoot?

Michlos had almost finished taking down the men that he had gone after most thugs were unprepared to handle someone like him but the two other teams he had brought with him were having a bit more of a difficult considering that they were no where nearly as well trained as him.

The men fighting the Rose Red group were losing, but pushed on by Shriek's influence. The extras showing up were hardly noticed until they got involved. Then the fighting spread out to what appeared to be easier targets.

The untrained thugs were preoccupied with each other and easier targets for a trained fighter like Jack. He forced the fight out of the apartment and into the hall where more were joining the fray.

Sometimes targets presented themselves well. Abigail was just knowledgeable enough of the hero community to recognize a few parties here. Which meant the people fighting them were the bad guys.

She opened fire on some of the thugs.

Leo touched the blood spot with his ungloved hand and active his power. His eyes turned white while he did not see what happened before the fight he knew enough to tell which bad guys were the ones he was after.

When he left the vision his eyes turned back to normal. Using what he had seen he called out to Abigail telling her which targets to go for. Then he reached for a lifesaver to make sure his blood sugar stayed up for the fight.

Michlos noticed that he was having trouble focusing why he couldn’t tell but it was making it harder for him to fight and the goons he was facing had made some blows on him that they otherwise wouldn’t have. But even so Michlos was still winning even if it had now become tougher than he had expected it to be.

Michlos men however were not doing as well as he was. Shrieks inference was really affecting them and making it hard for them to fight like they normally would. While they had not lost yet they were most certainly losing.

With the additional people showing up, Shriek decided to get out now and bring in more thugs another time. The point was made. The area was too dangerous to live in.

She hoped the boss saw it that way after she related the other group that had the same interest in the area. Heroes were one thing, but who was leading the other gang in the building?

She slipped out during the melee and left her men to fend for themselves.

With gunfire filling the hall, Jack went to ground and used his billy club on knees around him. Pain screams echoed in the small area and some fighters became crawlers trying to get away.

After taking a moment to regain his composure, Leo joined Abigail in shooting and opening fire on targets he knew were the people attacking the residents.

Abigail had given Leo a brief tip of the hat to thank him for the tip, before returning to firing on the proper targets.

With Shriek leaving Michlos men were starting to gain the upper hand against the thugs with the help of the heroes. The thugs shouldn’t last much longer now and with that though Michlos as he took out the last of his opponents. Once he was sure they were out he quiet left the building to avoid being noticed and hoped his men would be able to do the same.

Jack frowned behind his mask as the crowd seemed to melt away. He stayed low with the gunfire still echoing and the smell of spent ammo in the air.

As it cleared along with the noise, he spoke up. "Don't shoot me, I'm a good guy?"
