Tired, poor huddled masses
A hard looking kid dressed in a new fancy-name jacket held up a corner of the building opposite from the one Jack crouched on. Five stories up, Jack could see his silhouette pretty well from the lone street light halfway down the block. The kid, and the four menacing figures ranged around him in doorways of rundown brick buildings, were ‘taking care of business‘. Even the cold couldn’t put a damper on the need to score that last hit. Cars made a slow but steady cash flow trickle as Jack watched them ease to a stop at the corner. A few seconds to exchange tiny baggies for folded paper, and then back to lean against something and wait for the next.

He scanned the gloomy black of the neighborhood. It was a narrow cut of a street through three blocks of extreme poverty. All late 1800s brownstones converted into tiny apartments in the Depression, and in such disrepair that it would take more to renovate than any developer would consider, especially in this area. It would be more profitable to tear down and rebuild. This had once been an exclusive enclave of the rich and snobbish. Now there were shattered columns and smoke stains. Boarded up windows. Rats running through the walls. Plumbing that was closer to outhouses than usable bathrooms. Inside were marble walls and floors, cracked and stained. Ceilings low from water bloat and mold. Maybe it was kinder to get the people out of here but first they needed some place to go.

A round of eviction notices were still tacked up on many of the doors, but Jack figured it wouldn’t be enough. He noticed them on his first visit, and out of curiosity tracked down the owners through public records. All three blocks were bought at HUD sales over the last five years by two development companies, despite the companies’ history of housing code violations.

And that was probably what had brought him back the last three nights. There was something in the air along with the human stench and damp. It made his skin itchy. There were more tough looking guys on the street this week. He’d heard about eviction gangs that cleared buildings. Not always legal, but the legal system moved so slowly and it took only one well placed wrecking ball to bring down a structure. People with nowhere to go were notoriously hard to get rid of by shady landlords.

As he crouched in the deeper shadow of the roof, he heard yelling from the floor below.

One of Addy’s students didn’t have anyone picking her up from class at the Boys and Girls club. Not liking the idea of the seven year old walking home alone, Addy decided to walk with her.

The neighborhood didn’t seem right to Addy, though she stayed as calm as possible with her young student by her side. Dropping off the girl with her grandmother, Addy headed out but knew she was going to stick around. There was something in the air; her woman’s intuition was telling her so.

As she slowly walked down the streets with her gym bag on her shoulder she kept her ears and eyes open for anything that she was feeling.

Footsteps behind her were unhurried and soft.

Studying the other side of the street Addy stoped and pulled out her car keys. She didn't have any of her other little gadgets, so the keys were as good as it got. Placing one of the keys between her right index and middle fingers, she created a fist but continued to slowly walk.

More telepathically encouraged footsteps from ahead were heard. Their orders were to make life very scary for anybody on the street. No one said what not to do to make their point.

A menacing figure appeared from out of the dark and reached for Addy.

Keeping her breathing steady Addy had a feeling that she would have to use her keys. "Son of a bitch," she muttered to herself.

"That's no way to talk," a sulky voice said. "Jus' bein' friendly." The two closed in to sandwich her between them.

"Friendly my ass." she muttered. "What do you two want?" she asked trying to make her voice as calm as possible. She knew a fight was comming but wanted to keep herself in control.

They both laughed. "Two? Don't think she can count."

As if on cue, several more joined the party. The first man put his hand on her, grabbing for her hair.

Addy glared as more appeared, this was going to be difficult. But what good is anything fun if it isn't? With her keys held tightly in her right fist, one sticking out between her middle and index fingers, she swung at whoever was closest.

Laughter from the others rang out as the blow hit the closest man, ripping a blood trail across his face.

He made a grab for her hair.

Granted that hitting in the face was fun, Addy made the wise decision to aim for the groin. Her key still held tight between her fingers she punched.

He went down with a scream, curling into a ball around his injured parts. Lights turned on everywhere.

Those that could move scattered. Addy was pushed toward the street where there seemed to be more cars now, and people running. The whimpering man on the ground didn't try to move.
