Dawn of a New Defender
Dawn Roberts, librarian, had not been having a good week.  There had been the abduction, and then there had been the nightmares and freakout at work, along with a very perplexing change in her eye color.   And now, after a night of even stranger dreams, she'd discovered she'd sleep-walked all night and found herself in front of the Defenders' Compound, just as the sun was coming up.

She looked around nervously, feeling pain in her feet and calves from having walked so much without even knowing it.

Should she?  Something had brought her here.  But what on Earth would involve a nobody like her with a team of super-heroes and gods?  She was probably well beneath their notice.

She hesitated, then reached out and touched the buzzer on the gate.

Thor answers the call before too long, not getting the full information, but at least having clear that it involves his daughter. He soars over Asgard, descending on the trio and their escort from above.
"Two of thee I recognize. Who art thou?"

"M... My name is Dawn Roberts," Dawn began nervously. "Sir."

She gulped. "And... I think something happened to your daughter. Involving me."

Thor has somewhat more experience than most Asgardians with mortals, and senses her nervousness. So far, they haven't said anything truly tragic, so he can be sensitive to her fright.

"Come, the open streets art no place to discuss such matters. Wouldst thou care for something to eat? Or mead mayhap?"

"Something to calm the nerves may be wise," Syd said. "It's been stressful for all involved."

"We would be most honored," Ohu nods.

"That would be great, thank-you," Dawn said. No lightning bolt so far. She realized she was clutching the umbrella the staff had turned into. Why had she thought to bring that?

Thor nods. He makes sure the guards don't give the humans too much trouble, then takes them to his mead hall, making sure everyone is settled in and brought stew and mead before he begins again.

"Now, tell me what this ist about?"

"I have heard many stories of Thor," Ohu says, taking a bite from his stew. "This young mortal told me a story today which appears to lack a beginning and an ending... and it is one that I suspect you may be able to help provide one, if not both. For her story reminds me of one of the tales of Thor."

Nervously, Dawn outlined her experiences and dreams, up to the including suddenly turning into Asleif and turning back when she dropped the staff.

"...And then it turned into this umbrella," she finished.

Syd just kept quiet. She was just a mere mortal along for the ride.

Ohu, too, kept quiet, merely eating his stew. This was not his story to tell. He was merely its facilitator.

Plus, the stew was tasty!

Thor nods, considering. "Mine apologies, Miss Roberts. Thou hast been drawn into something beyond thy ken. For mine people, things doth not happen by accident, and it mayst be the Norns decided mine daughter had lessons to learn that she needed thine aid with. What the Norns hath wrought, e'en the gods cannot easily undo... but we canst train thee some bit in thine new abilities and responsibilities, if thou wilt accept it?"

Oh yes, he's quite familiar with this story, three times over.

Well, it didn't look like she was going to get struck by a lightning bolt and turned into a crispy critter. That was a good thing.

On the other hand... Powers? Responsibilities? She was a librarian for Pete's sake. She wasn't a hero.

"I... I don't know about any of this. This is all way beyond me."

She frowned, took a deep breath. "But I think if I don't do something, I might go nuts."

Another breath.

"I accept."

"Is there anything special I need to do?" Syd asked. Totally new territory for her.
