The Arrival (Open to Avengers)

-One Minute Ago, Washington DC, Earth 1222-

Justin Rhodes swore he’d never leave his suit unattended again after today.

He lay on the floor of an abandoned house and struggled against his unresponsive armor as he looked up at his father, Iron Man, who was checking the windows for any sign that they were followed to this safehouse. Most of Washington DC was on fire tonight, courtesy of the Avengers, but James Rhodes was never one to give up a fight as long as he had back up

Today was different for both of them.

“Justin, I’m sorry it had to happen like this. I knew you wouldn’t do this if I asked you, so it came down to this. You’re going to live, whether you want to or not, Justin. Your mother made me promise that I’d find a way out for you if this war went south for us; it has, and I did. It was her condition for letting you put the armor on in the first place.” Jim said, a tear sliding down his cheek.

“Dad, we can still win this! Just turn my armor back on and I can help you! You can’t cut me out like this!” Justin yells. He can’t believe his father is doing this to him now, of all times. He thought they were friends, a team. He even thought they were equals, once upon a time.

“I’m your father, Justin; I brought you into this world and I can take you out of it, which I’m doing now. I’ve always been proud of you, son. No matter what happens after today, your mother and I will be always be proud of you. You’re getting a second chance…make something out of it.” Jim says, slipping the Iron Man helmet over his head.

Tony- Cooridinates E-616, Sector 1211. Self-destruct upon arrival.

At that moment, the NIMROD sentinel bursts through the wall of the house the pair have been hiding in over the last hour, and Iron Man turns to face it.

“Tony, get him out of here, now!” Jim barks, lunging at the first cyborg he can see.

The last thing Justin sees before the world folds in upon itself is his father tearing the head off of one Sentinel and blasting another with his repulsor rays.  He doesn’t need to see how this ends, because he and his father both knew what was happening the moment he’d called retreat in New York after Captain America went down. It was all over.

In a way, it was over for him as well.

-Now, Times Square, Earth 616-

A bright light flashed above the New York skyline, then quickly descended toward the Earth. Many of the onlookers were too transfixed to realize that the falling object was headed toward them. The ones who figured it out fast enough had a head start on the panic and running.

Justin was barely conscious as he went through a series of passcodes in his armor, bringing all the systems on line, and tried to ignore the fact that the ground was rushing up to meet him faster than he liked. By the time all of his systems were online, the readouts were all bad news. His heart monitor was in the red, he was at forty percent power, and he was currently about five-thousand feet above the ground. Time until impact: 30 seconds.

“Tony, divert all power to thrusters, get me out of this nosedive, now!” Justin commanded, trying to turn and right himself in mid-air so as not to become an Iron Pizza in the middle of…

Where was he?

The closer he got to the ground, the more he recognized this city, but something was wrong with it. The were undamaged buildings, lights and from the look of things…lots and lots of people.

Living people.

Where the hell am I?

-Thirty Seconds Later-

“When I get home,” Justin muttered, “Dad and I are going to have a long talk about mid-battle surprises.”

He climbed out of the wreckage of the Stark Enterprises truck (he’d find time for the irony later) and tried to right himself. His left arm was numb, and his chest hurt like hell, but he didn’t have time to worry about it. He had to get off the streets and get somewhere safe.

“Are you okay, War Machine?” a little boy asked, the first person of a crowd of people who’d found their way to his location. He held a War Machine plush doll under one arm.

“I’m…I’m good.” he panted. “Thanks. Hey, where did you get that?”

Before the little boy could answer, there was another flash of light, this time from ground level, and a metallic voice spoke into the night.

JUSTIN ANTHONY RHODES. You are hereby charged with one count of unlawful dimensional travel, 672 counts of fleeing from justice and 1,992 counts of aiding in a terrorist rebellion against the rightful government of the United States of America.”

Justin and the little boy both looked at the NIMROD Sentinel at the same time; the boy stood frozen in fear and Justin’s eyes narrowed underneath the helmet.

“Kid, go back to your mother. Right now. Tell her to tell everyone here to go home now.” Justin said.

“You can beat ‘im, War Machine.” the boy said before he ran off.

I’m glad one of us thinks so.

How do you plead?” the Sentinel asked.

“Guilty as charged. Get to the sentencing portion.” Justin said.

You are found guilty under United States Penal Code 21832.673. The punishment for your actions is death. Prepare for sentencing. You may speak your final words.” the robot said,

“Uni-Beam.” Justin said, diverting power to his chest plate. The beam lanced forth and slammed the Bio-Sentinel through the glass window of the Sach’s department store thirty-five yards behind him. Luckily, the place wasn’t opened yet, so it could be damaged without cost to innocent bystanders.

“EVERYONE GET OUT OF HERE NOW!” Justin yelled, waiting for the Bio-Sentinel to make its move.

Anya leaned against Steve as they walked through the crowds at Times Square. The place was a flurry of activity as always and the bright lights of the signs made it seem like noon instead of almost 9:30.

The shopping bag from Toys R Us bumped against her leg as she walked. She was babysitting Scotty tomorrow night and Anya never babysat without a gift for her favorite kid.

One of the few good things about not being in school was that Anya got to spend considerably more time with her boyfriend. During the day she worked and Stark Inc and at night providing Steve didn't have too much homework, they spent time together. It sure beat text messages, phone calls and emails.

"Ready to head back?" she asked right before the shattering of glass.

Steve was definitely not objecting to getting to spend more time with his awesome girlfriend. Even if between school and Avengers' responsibilities, it was sometimes hard to find the time.

And Toni was still missing.

But there were good moments.

He was about the answer in the affirmative, when they heard the shattering sound. "...Actually, should probably check that out."

Justin's legs felt like lead, and he felt like he was swimming through molasses, but he couldn't let the Sentinel hurt anyone.

He strode toward the Saks department store and readied the canon at his shoulder to fire. One good laser blast to the chest would take down its processing core and render it useless.

"Tony, lock target on the processing core for this Sentinel. We don't want to damage it too badly. I may need to use it to repair the armor so I can get back home." Justin says.

That Sentinel should have been up by now. Justin gets to the window of the Department store looks inside.

The pulse cannon blast blinds him and now it is his turn to go flying back toward the street, sailing over the hood of an oncoming car and crashing through some tables and chairs at an outdoor cafe across the street.

"This..is not my day." he says, trying to pull himself back to his feet as NIMROD walks out of the remains of the department store window and looks for where War Machine landed.

"Call me insane again, but doesn't that look like...." It couldn't be. Toni was gone and Uncle Rhodey had given up the suit.

Steve frowned. "That's definitely a War Machine suit," he said.

He hefted his satchel, which contained his gear. "Get the mansion on the horn. I'm gonna change and see what I can do."

Submit, War Machine, and your sentence will be executed without undue suffering on your part. Nimrod said.

Justin took a deep breath and pushed himself to his feet. He lifted his arm, and watched as the laser targeting sight lined up on the reddish-purple area on the Sentinel's chest.

There were still too many people around them, some screaming and running, others still gawking at the fight before them. What was wrong with these people? I

It's like they're used to seeing armored men and robots fighting in the middle of their city, or something.

Justin's AI gave him a green light to fire, and the miniature semi-automatic wrist gun fired at the Sentinel. The robotic behemoth rocked back for a moment, surprised, but then lifted an arm and the bullets ricocheted harmlessly, hitting car windows, building windows and grazing a woman a few yards away.

Justin cut off the firing and hit the thrusters on the suit, ignoring Tony's warning that the suit only had twenty-seven percent power left...and the painful twinge in his chest saying he'd been in armor too long.

Nimrod watched Justin come and simply batted him aside mid-flight, slamming Justin into a wall not five feet from where Anya and Steve were located.

Humans, move away from the fugitive. He is dangerous and will not hesitate to use lethal force against you. Nimorod warned.

He did not consider either human a danger at this point.

Justin looked up at Anya and Steve...or tried to. The world was still spinning. "Sir....take your friend...and go. You're both in danger." he panted.

He tried to get back to his feet as Nimrod advanced on all three of them.

"On it," Anya said as she was already sending a signal to the mansion. In addition she activated her new suit and ordered it to lock on her signal.

"I've got a better idea," he told the downed armor-wearer.

Some of them still had a vague secret identity to protect, but it didn't take much for Steve to slip his mask, belt and gloves on, hurriedly throwing his quiver and scabbard over his shoulder.

He quickly selected his most powerful explosive arrow and let it fly at the robot.

Nimrod advanced to within ten yards of the group when Steve's arrow it. The arrow took the Bio-Sentinel's left arm off at the shoulder, and it sparked and popped as Nimrod re-evaluated the trio.

"Self-repair nanites engaged. Shields operative." the cyborg said, before looking directly at Steve.

"Aiding the fugitive is prohibited. Under U.S.Penal Code 21438.232, aiding a fugitive makes you an accomplice, to share in the fugitive's sentence."

Nimrod lifted his arm and fired three red-colored concussive blasts in Steve's direction. Steve would also see that the arm he'd severed was quickly being regrown by the Bio-Sentinel.

Justin was still trying to get to his feet, but he yelled to Steve.

"Aim for the chest! The reddish looking thing on his chest is the power core! Take it out, you take him out!" Justin said.

After everything that happened, Justin wasn't sure if he wanted to wake up. He came to, however, and realized that he didn't know where he was. This wasn't the infirmary at home; he was aware of that instantly.

This place was really bright...and organized.

Justin sat up quickly, too quickly, and winced, before settling back down. He sees Anya and offers her a pained smile.

"So Heaven still has cute angels. Rumors are true." he says.

"Flattery won't get you everywhere Mr. Rhodes." Totally weird there, but dimensionally challenged people showing up wasn't that weird anymore. "You're at the Avengers mansion and you're under doctor's orders not to get out of that bed." Anya smiled. "Anya Stark."

"Darn. Well, it was worth a try, right?" he said, sighing. He hated infirmaries and hospital beds. Mom used to make him stay in bed after an episode as well.

"Avengers Mansion? Really?" Justin asked, looking around again. He'd only ever heard stories from his parents about the mansions in New York and California. Those were a little before his time.

"Anya Stark, nice to meet you. I'm Justin Rhodes, but you probably learned that if you checked out my armor at all.

How do you know Un--Mister Stark? Family member?" he asks.

"It's always worth a try," she said with a smile. "Yes, really. I take it you've either never been there or it's been destroyed where you're from.'

She smiled. "I did check out the armor. I am a Stark after all. Nice suit and a very interesting AI." Though it sounded way too much like her father. "My AI's been chatting with it. He's happier than a Stark with a new toy."

"If you mean Mr. Stark by the one and only Tony Stark, he's my father. Natasha Romanova is my mother. I know who your dad is, do I dare ask who your mother is?"

"Yes, both. It was destroyed two years before I was born and then after the Sentinels came online, you couldn't get near New York without a suit or a ton of back-up." he says, nodding.

"Hey, what's today's date?" he asks. It's worth finding out if he's gone back in time or into an actual parallel dimension. Doc Richards would flip if Justin was in an alternate dimension. It would mean that a lot of the theories he, Dad and Uncle Tony worked on were successful.

"I hope Tony isn't too uppity with your AI. Someone programmed him to nag me up one side and down the other after I built him. My mother is highest on the list of suspects, followed by Uncle Tony and Dad." he says.

"Tony married Natasha? That's...that's great." Justin says, his tone happy and genuine. Back home, things didn't go so well for them, and it was one of the events that led to his passing.

The fact that Anya's talking about him in the present tense means he's still alive here.

"My mom? Her name is Virginia. Virginia Potts." Justin says. He may as well start getting familiar with all the players here if he's going to have any hope of getting back home.

Anya sputtered. "Pepper!? Pepper is your mom?" Oh this was just too good! Tomorrow morning at work was going to be interesting to say the least.

"Welcome to this world," she said with a smirk. "You're not our first dimensionally challenged person to drop in and thankfully you're not related to me." She smiled. "If he is, Goddard will give it right back. He's a snarky bastard."

"They just got married a year ago. They were together for a bit when they had me, split up and got back together."

"Your armor told me what happened. I want to hear your version."

[info]iron_hide

Justin blinked when he heard Anya refer to his mother by her nickname.

"Wait...you guys still call her Pepper here? Wow. Dad doesn't even call her Pepper back home, not even as a joke. He's ended up on the couch each time he's made the mistake." Justin laughs.

"So...both of them are here? Jim and...Pepper?" he said, trying the nickname out. That was going to take some getting used to.

"I'm happy for you and your parents. Uncle Tony and Natasha...they loved each other, but they were both pretty entrenched in their own lives. Neither of them knew how to make it work, and they parted ways. Tony didn't do so well after that." he says.

"Really, whatever my armor told you, there isn't much to elaborate on. Norman Osborn was appointed Secretary of Defense shortly after the passage of the Superhuman Registration Act. It started out as 'Register or never use your powers or tech again'. After the president and his most of his Cabinet were assassinated, Osborn became President.

No one could stop him, but the Avengers tried. They've all been my family since the day I was born. None of the rest of them had children, so they all pretty much spoiled me, which Mom loved and hated at the same time. I've spent a lot of my life dodging things like that Nimrod Bio-Sentinel you and your friend saved me from. Thank you both, by the way." he says.

"Anyway, Osborn had the tech, the numbers advantage, and little by little, he started taking us down. Uncle Clint and Aunt Bobbie were first. Vision and Quicksilver soon after. Uncle Tony saved my parents when no one else could and he paid for it.

Dad apparently rigged my suit to send me away if things got too bleak, and here I am now. I don't plan on imposing on you guys too long. As soon as I can stand, I'll start looking for ways to get back home." he says.

Dad had to be lying to him. He wouldn't really stick him here for the rest of his life while the rest of the Avengers died in battle. This had to be temporary. Reversible.

It had to.

Anya put a hand over her mouth. "Oh my God," she gasped. "That's...wow. I'm so sorry." She couldn't imagine such a world. No matter what happened, they always managed to prevent something like that from happening. It was unimaginable.

"She's Pepper here. She works for Stark Inc. She's always been my other mom while I was growing up. She's married to Happy and has been for a long time. As for Uncle Rhodey, well he's been married to Aunt Monica for about as long and they have a daughter named Toni."

"As for my parents, they didn't work the first time around. This time seems to be working. They're married and expecting another child in November."

James Rhodes was not a happy camper right now. His daughter was missing and thus far, he hadn't been able to do a thing to find her. He couldn't remember when he'd slept last, him or Monica.

And his last words with Tony had been rather... harsh, to say the least. He'd spoken somewhat unfavorably of Anya, claiming that if she hadn't dragged Toni into the Young Avengers... He'd also punched a wall and gotten a still-smarting hand for his trouble.

And now this. This was the kind of thing that happened to big damn important heroes like Tony or Steve, not him. He stepped inside the mansion, scowling.

Justin was having a bit of difficulty sleeping due to the pain, so he sat in his bed and stared up at the ceiling.

What if Anya was right? What if he was just the latest in a group of dimensionally-displaced visitors that was permanently marooned in this dimension?

How could his father do this to him?

He stared up at the ceiling and tried not to think about being alone in this dimension for the rest of his life, but positive thinking wasn't helping just now.

He sighed and tried to get comfortable, hoping sleep might take him soon.

Make that two men with the last name of Rhodes with no words for each other. One part of Justin is unreasonably angry at his father, even though he knows this is not his father...even though, technically, he is.

In any event, Justin sits up straighter immediately, and looks him in the eye.

"Um...hello, Mr. Rhodes. I was really hoping we didn't have to meet like this. Or at all, really. The last thing I want to do is make waves for you in any way." Justin says.

Why does he feel like he's six and just got caught trying on Uncle Tony's repulsor glove again?
