Honoring the Heroes
The Great Hall of Odin is awash with people and noise. The fallen heroes have been honored and it was now time to celebrate their victory. It was also time to celebrate the acts of courage and bravery in the heat of battle. Mead flowed freely and the tables were pregnant with food of all kinds.

Stories about the recent battle were exchanged as well as stories of previous battles. Songs passed down through time were sung as well as new ones.

The air was light and merry and it was a festive time in Asgard.

As much as Douglas adores and idolizes his father's dear friend Hogun the Grim, he is particularly terrible at emulating his hero once the songs and stories start. After the end of one in which he had enthusiastically participated, he catches his breath quickly and raises his voice again.

"Methinks much needeth saying about a certain person's excessive competence atop the wall."

A big smile. "But thou wast the one who did it." He fills another glass and raises it. "To Hjordis!" He near-howls it, despite being entirely human-shaped at the moment.

Hjordis turned a few shades of red but took a long drink from her cup of mead. "Thank thee, Douglas."

She raised her cup. "To Douglas of the wolves!"

Vincent is more than ready to raise a glass to his friend.

"To Lady Asleif, who ripped control of a spell that could have lead to our doom away from it's caster and emerged from the conflict unscathed!" He grins at her.

Svalin wasn't in a celebratory mood. Recent events and the battle had been trying and she wanted to be anywhere else but here.

She sipped mead and kept to the edges of the crowd.

He's still much too injured to celebrate the way he'd like to. He's waved off the wenches for the moment, and sticks to only one tankard of mead at a time, but at least he has a drink and a feast. When he sees his sister, he waves her over.

"Svalin, join me."

"Thou'rt a leader, thy people look to thee for guidance. Brood on thine own time. Aye, thou hath failed once... but this ist NOT thy party. Tis Asgard's. A victory was won, people hath lost loved ones, boon companions... they need something to celebrate. There wilt be many days for Svalin Sifsdottir to think of Svalin Sifsdotir... there art but few days we art all Asgardians united in victory. Thou hast health, thou hast a blooded blade, thou hast most of those close to thee to drink with thee. Be a leader in peace as well as war, and raise a cup to yesterday, for there mayst be no tomorrow. Thou'rt a princess and a commander... Asgard's victories shouldst be thine as well."

"I art not brooding," she said. "I hath raised cups to celebrate and honor Asgard's heroes. Mayhap I art not loud or boisterous enow for thee, but 'tis my nature to be reserved." One of them had to be the responsible one.

"Thou hast not yet raised a toast, and thou'rt avoiding thy reserved place near the center. I doth not ask that thou be as I wouldst, but if the people art to follow thee in war, they shouldst know thou'rt proud of their service, proud to be among them. E'en Aslief looks to be in finer spirits than thee."

He sighs. "Tis not simply that, sister. These people look up to thee. And they shouldst. We hath much to face, dark times layeth ahead. Enjoy this night, if not for thineself, that so many hath more days ahead to enjoy. If thou shouldst allow thyself, I am sure there ist yet a smile in thee, or thou wilt find one in the bottom of thy cup, when it hast been emptied a time or two more."

He nods. "Aye, I hath the easy job. I told thee, mine job ist to die in thy service. None expect me to do more than roar and look fierce before I find myself with one too many holes in mine chest to keep breathing." he responds with good cheer.
"Tis to thee to lead... but that ist as much in peace and celebration as war. Truth, I am in no mood to party either, the smell of so much blood drives me nigh to madness yet. If I couldst move so quickly, and father wouldst forgive me, I wouldst be on the hunt for two-legged, armed prey tonight. But I must needs be here, so I make the best of't. Thou shouldst as well."

"Aye, thou canst, we shalt share in a cup of mead, and toast to one another and a chance to return to our passions in other times. And then thou wilt leave thy ailing brother to whate'er comely nursemaids wish to offer him sympathies whilst thou go and find thy peers and share a few more drinks and tales and jokes of the blackest nature and whate'er else the night hast in store for thee."

She didn't expect less of her brother. He loved mead and women almost as much as battle. She was surprised he wasn't trying to push warriors at her to share her bed. "I wilt return with mean anon."

He darkens some when she moves on. He loves his mead and wenches, but they're crutches, like a lot of things. Something to use his energy on. Right now, the recent battle, and the fact he can still smell it, almost taste it, combined with barely even being able to move is driving him to distraction. But for Svalin, he'll put a good face on it and pretend he's enjoying this, or that he could even do anything with a wench if he had one without a few more days of recovery.

He just wishes she could find some joy in all of this.

When the mighty Thor enters, much of the place goes silent. Even in jubilation, he makes an entrance.

"Mine friends, we hath won a great victory this day. Many deserve commendation, and in the many salutes and toasts and tales, they shalt hath their say. But tis a rare occasion that I hath the honor to bestow a truly weighty honor 'pon one of our number for gallantry above and beyond the call of station. We art a people of order, or duty, of discipline... expectations art high. So tis with no small pride that as Lord of Asgard whilst mine father sleeps, I hath the privilege of offering promotion to Hjordis - if she agrees to accept... a mystical shield hath been prepared for her, that she mayst stand proud and true as shieldmaiden to Prince Skari of the royal family of the realm."

While never one to turn away from praise, Vincent is stunned. No mention of being of Midgard or the Fantastic Four, or being a half-blood. Simply his name. His new name.

He stands, offering his hand to Asleif, feeling more confident with her accompaniment, before approaching Lord Thor. He smiles to her and nods.

Asleif accepted the hand, suddenly and briefly uncomfortable with the attention and adoration. Odd. She had always assumed she would be quite comfortable with glory.

All this passed through her mind as she, alongside Vincent, approached her father.

Releasing her hand as they approach her father, Vincent kneels before Thor.

"Your praise humbles me, Lord Thor. I am only too happy to serve the realm of my birth,--" a pause "--and death."

There was an eerie sensation of knowing where your death would come, if not when. Like the sparse comfort of pulling a moth-eaten blanket over oneself.

Aridis had been cheering and clapping with the others. She had been proud of everyone. When there had been dancing she had danced with anyone who had wanted to.

Most of the time she hung onto the tales of the others while sipping down cups of mead. Her head feels light after a few hours of this and she backs up to get a breath of air. She does not normally feel like this.

It takes Aridis a short moment to think of how to put it.
