It takes a great deal of self-discipline to stop the wince.
And for the moment, he just doesn't address his little-brother-of-sorts as anything at all.

Not trying to salt the wounds isn't the same as not salting them.
"There is nothing for which to apologize. I could not legally accept if you did." His tone continues to be polite by sheer force of will, but he can't keep the pain out completely.
