Between sisters
Aridis was thinking over all that had happened. There was much to think about. Fate had much in store for them and theirs and much of it was unexpected. She had always thought that it would be Svalin or Aslief that would end up in the position that the All-Father had said was to be hers if everything went the way Aridis expected it would.

She did not want it for a moment. She could not change fate though. To do so would to risk ruin.

Thinking all of this over she began to fix herself a mug of tea. She had grown fond of the way the mortals brewed it and found some of the more fragrant blends were most enjoyable.

"Hail and well met to thee as well," Asleif returned, with a slightly bowed head. "How fares our brother?"

"He ist not good, but he wilt live. He ist already asking for mead and cannot be that bad. How fares thee?"

"He hath ever been resilient," she said.

She shook her head. "Not as well as I wouldst prefer, I admit," Asleif went on, after a moment. "Recent events doth hang heavily upon me."

"Aye, that he ist."

Svalin nodded in understanding. "Aye. Grandfather's words doth weigh heavily on all of our minds. As doth events of the battle."

Svalin paused. Talking to Asleif was always difficult, but Svalin would make an effort. They were sisters after all.

"I know that we oft do not get along and art opposites, but thou art mine sister and I wilt listen if thou wouldst like to talk."

Asleif found Svalin equally difficult to talk to. They were simply too different to get along well.

She nodded and considered. "Mine own prophecy," she said, after a moment. "Suspicion. Always suspicion. Even in the grand prediction of the end times, it seems it be unknown whether or not I stand with Asgard or against it."

Svalin put a hand on her sister's shoulder. "Thou wilt do what thou thinks the right thing and what thine heart tells thee to do. We have faith in thee and we believe in thee. Thou art our sister, our blood, and we love thee."

Asleif is not particularly big on being touched, but she makes no move to remove her sister's hand. Instead, she nods and perhaps smiles ever so slightly, the merest twitching of the lips.

"That means much to me, sister. I thank thee."

"There ist no need to thank me. We all should have been better at telling each other what we mean to each other."

Svalin removed her hand. There were limits to Asleif's patience and tolerance. "For mine actions in battle, Father hath suggested I spend time away from all of thee. I wilt make mine decision when we art to return to Migard, but if I opt to go to the Avengers, thou wilt be oldest. I trust thee and have faith in thee to look after Aridis, Halbjorn and the rest of the Defenders."

Asleif's eyes briefly widened in surprise. "Thou wouldst trust me with such? Perhaps I hath truly misjudged thee, Sister."

She frowned, however. "Thou didst not make the wrong decision," she told Svalin simply. "This, I know for a certainty."

She looked away. "Because it wert not the decision I wouldst have made."

"I hath always trusted thee, sister, with mine life and the lives of our family. Thou art responsible and I know thou loves each of us. Aridis and Halbjorn couldst not have better looking out for them."

Svalin bowed her head.

"I didst not do mine duty. I hath failed Asgard and many now sit in Valhalla because of mine actions."

"I wouldst slay any who doth dare say that thou doth not have a heart."

"Thou put our brother first," Asleif told her. "I fault thee not for that and call it not failure. I wouldst place thine life, and his, and Ardis too, before all others, no matter how much we mayest disagree."

"Thou be mine sister, and I wish thee well wherever fate doth take thee."

Svalin smiled. "It doth fill mine heart with happiness and faith to hear thee say those words. I art proud of thee and what thou didst during the battle. Asgard ist most lucky to have a sorceress such as thee. Fare thee well, Asleif."

Svalin turned to go.

Asleif allowed herself the luxury of a small smile.

"Fare thee well, Svalin."
