Between sisters
Aridis was thinking over all that had happened. There was much to think about. Fate had much in store for them and theirs and much of it was unexpected. She had always thought that it would be Svalin or Aslief that would end up in the position that the All-Father had said was to be hers if everything went the way Aridis expected it would.

She did not want it for a moment. She could not change fate though. To do so would to risk ruin.

Thinking all of this over she began to fix herself a mug of tea. She had grown fond of the way the mortals brewed it and found some of the more fragrant blends were most enjoyable.

Svalin was still in the process of meeting with and talking to the families of the people who had died because of her mistake. It was not an easy task, but she would do it. Reactions varied greatly. Some were hostile and belligerent while others were understanding and did not blame her.

Now she was taking a break to grab a bite to eat and a mug of something warm. She was pleased to see Aridis in there.

"Hail sister and well met."

She turns with the mug of steaming tea. She takes a long look at her sister and inclines her head.

"Hail and well met, my sister," Aridis greets. She looks more somber than one would expect from the Eagle of the quartet. She was aware of what had happened to some degree. Talk always flew about after a battle and this was no different. She would not demand answers for she did not think it her place.

"How fares thee?" Svalin looked at her twin and recalled the prophecy. Things had changed between them since Lord Odin had said the fateful words.

"I fair as well as can be expected," she says somewhat enigmatically. Then winces mentally. This was her twin. She should not hide what is in her heart.

"I do not want what fate chooses to give me. I wouldst rather serve you or Aslief. I wouldst not choose to become more than who I hath always been. I hath never truly desired power or glory for mine-self. Only glory for Asgard," Aridis says while setting the mug down and casting her arms apart widely.

Svalin nodded. "Aye, sister. Mine doth not sit with me well either." She looked away for a second. "I art truly sorry." It would be her fault that her sister would be forced to carry such a heavy burden and forced to do such a difficult duty.

Her eyes narrow just enough to let Svalin know that she is being glared at. "Say no such thing. You hath not yet put this on my shoulders my dear sister. You must not say you are sorry for things that hath not yet come to pass. If you were to do so you wouldst have to go out right now and say such to everyone you may burden in the future and you would hath no more time to take care of what ist truly important."

She glances away for a moment. ""Though this once I wilst accept it. I love thee dearly sister. I do not want this to stand between us. I wouldst follow thee anywhere if only you wouldst ask it of me."

"I doth not want to put this burden on you, Aridis. Duty ist not a thing we can see or lift, but it weighs more than a mountain. Thou shouldst not have to bear the burden of duty. Wert I to do mine duty and not betray Asgard, thou wouldst not have this burden."

"I love thee, sister. This wilt not stand between us."

Aridis looks puzzled and surprise colors her gaze. "You wouldst do no such thing. It ist not in your nature."

She does not believe that Svalin is capable of betraying Asgard. She just does not believe it nor does she desire to. Her faith in Svalin is unwavering. Aridis embraces her twin with a sudder. "I do not want to believe thee. I love thee too much to ever hold any anger against thee Svalin. Do not tell me you will fail. I wilst not hear it. Not now. It all happens for a reason. I must have faith in that and in our family."

Svalin hugged her sister. "Aye, sister. It wilt happen. I hath already betrayed Asgard once. To do so again ist not a stretch."

"Grandfather didst say it would be so when he giveth me mine prophecy."

Svalin went still as she began to recite the words her grandfather had spoken.

"And in the end times, when Odin All-Father see'st no more,
Consumed by the all-devouring hunger of Fenris,
And Mighty Thor hast departed to battle Jormungandr to the last,
The Eldest scion of Asgard remaining to it shalt quit the throne,
And in Asgard's blackest moment, she shalt fly to her brother's side
And there she shalt meet her first end, born under by the blackest tide
Defending her brother's back.
And then she shalt be the final chosen rider,
And Brunnhilde shalt surrender her leadership and post,
And Svalin shalt lead the final charge of the Valkyrie, choosers of the slain.
And whilst they will be slain to the last, ten spears shalt pierce the Fenris' heart.
Svalin's and Brunnhilde's shalt strike most true, and pierce the Wolf's heart through.
Odin shalt be avenged, and the last two of the Valkyrie shalt fight to the last,
With Brunnhilde as Svalin's shield-maiden, standing before the doors to the throne room."

"Oh Sister," Aridis says with sad eyes.

Are they doomed to be scattered to the winds? To at the end of things be separated? She had dreamed that they would be at each others sides for close to forever.

That was not to be.

"Then the rumors that fly like birds are true," Aridis murmurs sadly while pulling away from her sister to look at her. She seems distant right now as if looking at Svalin from miles away.

"I understand. He ist our brother. We couldst not stand to one side easily. Not any of us. I do not see it as you betraying us. Remain true to thineself sister and I wilst always sing of you. Didst thou know that you are my favorite? When I find it most difficult to stand firm in what must be done, I think of thee."

"Thou words art of comfort, sister. Thou art mine twin and I love thee beyond words. I love all of mine siblings, but that love must not come before mine duty to Asgard. It hath once and hath cost many lives and nearly the life of our brother. I doth not have the option of putting mine family before Asgard."

"When I art weak in mine conviction and dedication, I think of thee and how thou art all that ist good and pure. This ist what must be preserved and protected. Thou art truly a bright spot of warmth and light in Asgard and in many lives. Thou giveth me strength and purpose and without thee I wouldst be lost and hath surely hath failed by now."

"Aye thou art right. But we art not perfect and we are capable of mistakes even when they art born on the wings of the best of intentions. You didst not mean to fail anyone," Aridis says simply knowing her twin all too well.

She was glad to know she gave comfort to her sister. She thought it was good that even when they were not together on a battlefield she could still lend her sister strength.

"I thank thee sister. I wish to be a warrior and not a maiden who needs to be guarded but it ist good to know that I can lend thee strength wher'er you are. I do not like it when I can't fight by your side but I am best put to use with the archers."

"The point remains. I didst not do mine duty and lives wert lost because of it."

Svalin gave her sister a small sad smile. "Thou art mine sister. It ist always mine duty and responsibility to protect thee and the others."

She nodded.

"Aye. We serve where we art best. Thee with the archers. Me commanding the troops. Asleif with the sorcerers and Halbjorn with the bear sarks. I wouldst much prefer to be at thine side and Hal's on the battlefield."

She looked away.

"Father hath suggested time away from thee, Asleif and Halbjorn when we return to Migard to clear mine thoughts and find mine way. He hath suggested I join the Avengers. I doth not like the idea of being away from thee and the others, but I doth believe Father ist correct."

She's going to let this go for now.

"It ist ours to help protect you too," Aridis echoes it is an age old argument. But it is one Aridis knows she will never truly win.

""Aye. I wouldst wish I were better with a sword but takes a keen eye and a steady hand to fire a bow like I do," Aridis says with a simple nod. She takes in what comes next and simply agrees.

"Aye. It sounds like a wise move. Sometimes it is best to go a different way for a time. When you come back your mind will be clear."

"Aye. Thou could," Aridis says with an amused smirk appearing on her face.

Then she nods in a very calm collected manner.

Svalin shook her head. "Thou shouldst fear his madness. When the madness doth grip him, he doth not know friend from foe, e'en a sister. Thou must always be prepared to defend thyself when talking to him when he ist in that state."

"There ist no helping him, Aridis. It ist who he ist. The best thou canst do is point him in the proper direction and hope he still draws breath at the end."

Svalin had spoken to Halbjorn and to Aridis. Now it was time to talk to her other sibling. The one she had the least in common with and the one that was the hardest to talk to.

She went looking for Asleif.

Asleif could be found on a balcony, looking out over the realm with quiet contemplation. Like Svalin and Ardis, she had much to think over these days. Her own part to play in the future was quite uncertain and circumspect. Savior or slayer? She liked to think she knew the answer to that, but...

"Hail sister and well met," Svalin said as she stepped out onto the balcony. One did not startle Asgardians if it could be prevented.

"Aye, that he ist."

Svalin nodded in understanding. "Aye. Grandfather's words doth weigh heavily on all of our minds. As doth events of the battle."

Svalin paused. Talking to Asleif was always difficult, but Svalin would make an effort. They were sisters after all.

"I know that we oft do not get along and art opposites, but thou art mine sister and I wilt listen if thou wouldst like to talk."

Asleif found Svalin equally difficult to talk to. They were simply too different to get along well.

She nodded and considered. "Mine own prophecy," she said, after a moment. "Suspicion. Always suspicion. Even in the grand prediction of the end times, it seems it be unknown whether or not I stand with Asgard or against it."

Asleif is not particularly big on being touched, but she makes no move to remove her sister's hand. Instead, she nods and perhaps smiles ever so slightly, the merest twitching of the lips.

"That means much to me, sister. I thank thee."

"There ist no need to thank me. We all should have been better at telling each other what we mean to each other."

Svalin removed her hand. There were limits to Asleif's patience and tolerance. "For mine actions in battle, Father hath suggested I spend time away from all of thee. I wilt make mine decision when we art to return to Migard, but if I opt to go to the Avengers, thou wilt be oldest. I trust thee and have faith in thee to look after Aridis, Halbjorn and the rest of the Defenders."

Asleif's eyes briefly widened in surprise. "Thou wouldst trust me with such? Perhaps I hath truly misjudged thee, Sister."

She frowned, however. "Thou didst not make the wrong decision," she told Svalin simply. "This, I know for a certainty."

She looked away. "Because it wert not the decision I wouldst have made."

Svalin bowed her head.
