Valentine's Day Massac...er...Dinner!
Everything Sammy knew about Valentine’s Day romance she learned from Nick. Flowers and candy. A really nice piece of jewelry. Reservations to Mom’s favorite restaurant. A late night slow dance on the terrace under the stars. Sneaking upstairs past the kid’s room and closing the door to the parents’ room. If she’d been dating a girl, she would’ve known exactly what to do, minus the kid part.

That Valentine’s Day was just around the corner didn’t really register with her. It wasn’t a holiday that she’d ever been involved with other than grade school card exchanges and ‘helping’ Dad pick out a gift for Mom. Also, she was distracted by a second request from Brendon Hill and this time he had a carrot to dangling in front of her. He would help her track down the escaped Zodiac members. Clearly she needed to talk to someone. This was what boyfriends were for, right?

"That can wait for a bit. Have a seat." She looked around her room to find something to put roses in and settled on the empty water carafe. Her voice floated in from the bathroom over running water. "Tell me what you've been up to."

He moves her school bag out of the corner chair and sits gingerly. "Besides school and being a superhero?" He shrugs. "I don't think I've had a chance to tell you how Haiti was. It was pretty horrible. By day, I was a part of search parties, or helping administrate relief efforts, and by night, I was going around and stopping any gangs." He shakes his head. "It astounded me, really."

He pauses, for a moment second-guessing himself as to whether or not the topic is an appropriate one, then realizing that Sammy carries guns with her to class and this conversation would be akin to dinner conversation when Sammy was growing up. By then, his pause had grown too long to continue the topic, so he forges ahead. "...and you?"

She returned with the roses and set them on her bureau where she could enjoy them without danger of knocking them over. "I read the reports that came through Mom's office. It wasn't hard keeping up with what you were doing when I knew what to look for between the lines."

She sat down on bed corner and crossed her legs. "When you're in the mood for a good laugh, I'll show you the slide show of Toni and Charlie trying to stop a wedding in Las Vegas."

"That's the funny part. Charlie overheard Anya and Steve talking about going to Las Vegas for a weekend and immediately thought they were eloping. He convinced Toni that he was right so we piled in the quinjet and went to save them." She laughed. "Charlie and Toni went to save them. Vernique, Ryan and I went to keep them from tearing the Strip apart. They crashed three Elvis weddings looking for them. I have pictures."

"Well, we assume the weddings were able to get back to business when we left, but who knows?" She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Then we had the Empress episode, so there hasn't been much of a chance to talk to you about the messages I'm getting."

She nodded. "He's in SHIELD custody along with Mikel and a few others. I ignored the first one, but there was another waiting when we got back."

"I don't know, but this time the message said he'd help hunt down the rest of the Zodiac if I meet with him. I want them, and not just because I can't shoot Mikel yet." She studied her hands. "Dad said whatever I did to Mikel he'd have done to me."

"He can keep as long as he's in custody." Sammy put her hand over his and squeezed. "This other thing is bothering me. I want the rest of them, but from all reports they've pretty much disappeared. If Hill can really give me some leads it might be worth listening to what he has to say."

"It could," she had to admit. "The question is, is it worth the risk of listening to what he has to say? Also, why deal with me? I have no authority and I'm pretty much out for revenge." She said the last with a half smile.

He shakes his head. "You have authority. It's just not on paper. Think about it, Sammy. You're the child of two of the most important SHIELD agents out there. You may not have a lot of rank, but many people in SHIELD will think twice before refusing one of your requests. And any power you might have in that area is entirely off the books." He shrugs. "And someone out for revenge can be easier to manipulate, because you can predict what they want."

"I think it's better to ignore it. If he wants to help SHIELD capture people, he can do so through any agent, not just through you." He scratches his chin. "I think that if he's asking for you, he wants something from you, not that he wants to offer something."

He shrugs. "I've managed to score tickets to the ballet, if you want to go," he offers. "And I've freed my schedule so I'm available for the rest of the day." He smiles. "We are totally on your timetable."
