Nervous Was Too Kind A Word
Nervous was too kind a word. Sydney had been on edge from the second she had woke up in the morning and had looked at the clock a million times during the day. She was meeting Avery tonight for dinner and she had a sinking feeling in her gut. Whatever was going to happen, she knew it couldn't be good.

The plans were for dinner at a restaurant she knew well. Syd had called Avery earlier in the week to make the arrangements. A place and a time had been arranged and until this morning Syd hadn't thought too much about it. She had enough distractions around the place to keep her mind occupied. This morning was a different story however.

During the week she did contact a lawyer and met with him to explain the situation. Avery wasn't stupid and Syd was going to have things ready if the subject of Zoey came up. She wasn't going to let anything happen to her daughter or her relationship with her daughter.

Zoey was dropped off at Bryn's (despite how much Ohu assured her it was okay to leave Zoey with him she was not going to leave him with Ohu) and Syd headed for the restaurant.

She arrived ten minutes early and was shown to a table.

Syd stood when he arrived and offered him a nervous smile. "Avery," she said and sat down with him. She may have blushed a little. "Thank you. Yes, we have. How did you week go?"

Avery smiled when she did, despite himself. He was supposed to be angry at her, but her smile made him forget that for just a moment.

"The week went well. My deal went through, I got nice bonus, and I got some other unexpected news that I wasn't prepared for. It's been good." he said, taking a look at the menu on the table, though he wasn't hungry at all.

"How about you and Zoey? Did you two have a good week?" he asked.

Syd smiled. "I'm glad to hear that. We did." There had been no disasters that needed the Defenders' attention. The Defenders didn't cause any disasters. Huh, it was a quiet week. Maybe they were saving it all up for next week. Though with the Quads gone for who knew how long, maybe things would remain quiet. There was still the matter of Ohu.

"Nothing major happened," she said. What an odd thing to be able to say.

Syd leaned forward a little and the butterflies fluttered in her stomach. "Look, Avery, I know you've probably been wondering because of the timing and Zoey's age and...." She looked him in the eye. "Yes, Zoey is yours."

Avery took a deep breath, and lowered his head. He did not speak right away, because he didn't trust himself not to make a scene. She confirmed what he wanted to know before the conversation got too far in, which did take some of the edge off his original anger.

But not much.

When he finally looked up at her, there was pain and anger in his eyes, but he kept it out of his voice to ask a simple (to his mind) question.

"Why didn't you tell me, Sydney? Six years and you never once made any attempt to find me, or just...let me know. Why?" he asked her.

Sydney had been expecting the question, but it didn't stop her from giving him an incredulous look. "I tried. It's very difficult to find someone in a city of 800,000 people when you only know their first name. We spent three days together in a hotel. I didn't know your last name, I didn't know where you lived and you expected me to be able to find you in a city?"

"I've been in the paper a few times, with photos, over the last couple of years. I found you through the paper in the picture with the Defenders and...here we are now." he says.

"We need to tell Zoey. As soon as possible." he says simply.

"Look, up until recently, I've been working two jobs and taking care of Zoey. Reading the paper was the last thing on my priority list and if you weren't on the front page, I didn't see it."

Syd leaned forward. "We will tell Zoey, but not right away. Not until we get things worked out. I know my daughter and she will have questions. It will be best that we can answer them before we tell her instead of telling her we're still figuring things out."

"All right, let's start off with an easy question, then? What exactly did you tell her about me the last few years? She's had to have asked at some point." Avery says, hoping to God his daughter was at least that curious.

"And if I'd known, Sydney, you wouldn't have had to work two jobs. You wouldn't have had to work at all, really." Avery says, working harder to keep the edge out of his voice. He would have understood if she found out he was some kind of horrible person, but he was still having a lot of trouble with her excuse of not being able to find him.

"And when you say 'getting things worked out' it makes me think you think I might try to take her from you." he says. He does not immediately try to dissuade her from that line of thinking.

"She has asked and I told her the truth. That I knew you, we spent a little time together and then we went our separate ways. I told her that I couldn't find you."

Syd rubbed the bridge of her nose. "I don't know what your intentions are, Avery. I want to do this with as little disruption to Zoey's life as possible. She's a great kid and I don't want to do anything that will put her in therapy in ten years."

"I would like for us to be adults about this and work this out. That's all I am asking for."

"All right, we agree that Zoey's life shouldn't be disrupted. But...I have to say that I have some serious concerns about your friends, the Defenders. I've learned a bit about who they are and what they can do...and they seem to attract as much danger as they protect people from, Sydney. How much contact does Zoey have with them? What precautions are you taking to keep her and yourself safe?" he asks.

He takes a deep breath, trying to keep himself from coming across as a jerk, but a part of him feels like he's entitled. After all, Sydney didn't lose anything in this.

"We're both adults, and we're both parents. We want what's best for Zoey, so that should be our common ground." he says.

"Are you seeing anyone?" he asks her.

Syd's gut tightened up. He had just tipped his hand if he was going to try for custody of Zoey. She knew what he would use against her. "We live with the team," she said carefully. "My job is to help them adjust to life here on Migard...sorry, Earth. There are protocols in place if something happens at the compound for Zoey and me."

Syd nodded. "We do need to do what's best for Zoey. That should always be our first priority."

"No. Maybe. I'm not sure." Her personal life was...complicated to say the least. "I had one blind date with someone and we made plans to go to a museum. That's about it." She wasn't even going to touch the Simon issue. Not even with a forty foot pole.

Well, Zoey's speech patterns were starting to make sense. He wondered if those people actually spoke or dressed as they did or if it was just part of the "hero" motif.

Avery wasn't certain if confirming that some of the Norse Gods were really and living near his daughter was comforting or terrifying.

"You said 'compound'. The connotations of that word are interesting." he says simply. When she says that she's been on a blind date with someone, the image of the man with red eyes creeps back into his memory. He doesn't know who this man is, but he's seen him in relation to Sydney before.

"So, it's not serious, then? All right." he says with a shrug. "I'm not trying to inventory your personal life, but these are questions a man has when a child is involved." he says to her.

"Look, let's dial down the tension here. Will you tell me about Zoey, please? Everything and anything. What does she like? What doesn't she like? What's her favorite color? Does she snore?" he asks.

"I need to know more about her, Sydney. Please." he asks earnestly.

"I say compound, but basically it's a mansion with a few bungalows. It's the place the West Coast Avengers used when they were active," Syd explained. "It's a gorgeous place and we even have a private beach and Zoey has enough room to play and ride her horse."

"It's not serious. We've had one date." She glanced at his wedding ring. "What about your wife? Have you mentioned any of this to her? A child is a major disruption in a person's life and I need to know she will be fine with Zoey."

Syd smiled at the thought of her daughter. "She's a great kid. She's funny, smart as a whip, very well behaved," Syd started. She was not going to mention the fight in school on the first day. "She gets along with just about everyone and she has the wildest imagination. She loves people and animals and they love her. She has the entire team wrapped around a little finger."

"That place...is huge!" he says in shock. His daughter has a horse. Scratch that off the list of things to get her.

His look sours when she mentions the ring. "We're separated, actually. Going through divorce proceedings. She says I work too much, but I have to say it's difficult when you find out she's been unfaithful." Avery says, conversationally.

"I apologize. You didn't need the gory details. Look, I'm not here to steamroll in and try to take Zoey. My life is going through some changes, yes, but I'm willing and able to put Zoey first, if she'll have anything to do with me." he says.

He smiled brightly as Sydney described Zoey's qualities. He could only imagine were she got her gregariousness and charm from.

"Does she play any instruments? Is she musically inclined at all?" he asks.

"It's only fifteen acres," Syd said with a small smile. She had gotten used to living in such a large place. So much had happened in such a short time.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Avery. I am. I'm sure Zoey will want to be with you. She asked for a daddy for Christmas." Syd just didn't think she'd actually get one, let alone her biological father.

"Piano. She just started lessons. She takes ballet lessons and karate lessons as well."

"She...did?" he asks, hoping that Zoey will indeed accept him. He would love nothing more than to tell her who he is right now, but Sydney is holding all the cards at this point.

When Sydney mentions that she plays the piano, he smiles widely, despite himself. He started the piano at her age, and could play seven instruments. Years ago, before he became the suit-and-tie kind of guy he is now, he wanted to be a musician.

"Piano, ballet and karate? You keep her busy, which is good. If you don't mind...I'd like to come and watch a recital sometime. It doesn't have to be right away...just in the future." he says.

"Does she have any other talents?" he asks.

"She did. She does every year." Syd had thought it cute, but now...well it had happened.

"I try. She's an active kid and full of energy. This is my way of managing it I guess." Syd nodded. "Of course. I'll let you know when her next one is."

"Other talents...hrm. Let's see. There's getting five godlings to do what she wants."

"Thank you. I look forward to it." Avery says.

"There is a part of me that wants to know how she manages this impressive feat, but judging from what I saw of her, it's like you said; she's got them wrapped around her fingers." he says.

"How is she doing in school?" he asks.

"It's by being cute and adorable," Syd admitted with a proud smile. "She gives you this really big smile and it's really hard to say no."

"She's doing great in school. She's reading above her grade level, has easily picked up math concepts and gets along with her classmates." So not going to mention the incidents. Not going there at all.

"I bet." he says, smiling in return. "She's beautiful. Gets it from her mother."

"She's progressing well and she's friendly. That's good. Making friends is always important." he says. It's probably best he doesn't know about the incidents, as he'd likely blame them on the other kid.

"When is her birthday?"

"August 30th." So not going to mention anything about the last birthday party.

Avery nods, takes his Blackberry from his coat pocket, and enters August 30th into his calendar. He doesn't think he'll forget his little girl's birthday after this year, but one can never be too careful.

His initial anger had faded somewhat, though he was still a bit uneasy about some facets of Sydney's life regarding Zoey.

"Well, someday soon, I'd like to get her something that she doesn't already have. Maybe a doll, if she's into those. Or some kind of electronic gadget. I'm a bit of a technophile myself. The number of laptops I own might make the FBI nervous." he says.

"I think you may have to ask Zoey the Awesome on that one. Kids' tastes change on a daily basis." Though Zoey showed no signs of not wanting to be like Asleif and the rest of the Defenders. She insisted she be referred to as Zoey the Awesome.

"When do you think you'll be back in the LA area?"

He thought about it for a minute.

"Well, I go to New York on Monday morning to finalize a deal with a client there for one of our other branches. But I'll be back the following week, and as it happens, I've been asked to take up the Vice-President position in our LA office.

So, about three weeks from now, give or take. My parents bought Cecelia and I house in Beverly Hills. Turns out I'll be there alone, but if you and Zoey want to come by when I'm back, I'd be happy to cook you two dinner." he offers.

Syd thought about the offer and then thought how to phrase this so he wouldn't be offended. "Zoey gets along with everyone, but I think neutral ground may be better for a first meeting." She smiled a little. "Then we can do dinner."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]nextgen_citizen

"I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking. You're right, neutral ground would be a better place." he said. Of course, she wouldn't want to bring Zoey anywhere she didn't fully know about first. He figured he should have foreseen that, but he didn't.

There was a part of him that wanted to ask Sydney if Zoey had developed any other talents that weren't as mundane as musical talent or intelligence, but he didn't want the question to sound odd.

Sydney might not react favorably to the idea of her daughter possibly being a mutant. Or was he afraid that she might not react favorable to him being a mutant?

"Maybe lunch in the park, or pizza. She likes pizza, even if I can't eat it." he chuckles. "She can have some for me."

"I'm still new to this whole business world stuff. Thankfully Simon and Mr. Stark have been very patient with me."

She smiled a little.

"That sounds like a good idea." Now that some of the nervousness was gone, she realized she was hungry.
