Dinner
Natasha skipped reservations and went for a place that was more casual. One of their favorite places was Big Nick's and it was the perfect place for a casual dinner for mother and son. She sent him a text with the time and a message to meet a big Nick's. She was in the mood for a burger anyway and Big Nick's had great burgers.

She left a note for Tony and James to let them know where she was. Since telling Tony about her pregnancy, he had been overprotective and almost as bad as a mother hen.

She arrived early of course and grabbed a booth. Water was brought to the table and she passed the time by sipping it.

"Mom," he said gently, "it's enough you don't think of it like that. What everyone else thinks doesn't matter." He squeezed her hand again, then lifted it to kiss her knuckles. "I'm trying to reassure you and failing, huh? Dad'll have my hide nailed to the Danger Room wall for upsetting you. There have been plenty of times in the last two years that you could've lost me, and you didn't. Doesn't that tell you something?"

"You're not upsetting me, Mikhail. We're just talking."

She gave him a reassuring smile. "I'm fine. And let's get this straight right now, I'm pregnant, not sick or fragile. So you don't need to treat me as such. Okay?"

"'Fraid you don't get a say in it, darlin'," he said and winked. "If you want me to be fine with everything, you need to let me work through it my way. If that includes treating you like you're a little bit fragile, you'll just have to put up with it." Blackmail was a family tradition.

He kissed her knuckles again and set her hand back on the table. "I'll be there to take you to the ballet. I'll even shave."

"You're such a brat," she said and squeezed his hand. "I love you so much and I always will."

She smiled. "Do you need a new tux?"

"I love you, Mom. I'm doing my best to make you proud, but that doesn't include needing a new tux. You just went through my closet two months ago and sent the old stuff to Good Will and put more in it for Christmas. If there's no tux in there, I'll think you're slipping."

"You have always made proud, honey. Always. I know you'll always will."

She smiled. "Then you need a new one. I know it's been a year or two since I've bought you a tux."

"I think it has. Your brother needs a new one anyway. He grew a few inches in the last year so I might as well get you a new one too."

She dressed him well, he had to admit. When he had to be somewhere scrubbed and presentable, he made a good showing. Best of all, she somehow refrained from replacing his old jeans and tee shirts.

"Yes, ma'am." He saluted her again. "Does Dad know yet? About the pregnancy?"

"No, not yet. Right now you and Tony are the only ones who know. Tony is going to tell your sister and I'm going to tell James and Eliza."

He nodded. It was nice to be in on something at the beginning for a change instead of catching up after everyone else. "Okay. I wanted to make sure. It's your business, I'm not going to say anything."

"It's still your business." It was her news; he wasn't going to talk about it. It wasn't his place to say anything until she'd told everyone who needed to hear it. "You can tell him I'm sufficiently threatened so he doesn't feel the need to have one of talks."

Which wouldn't mean a whole lot if Dad decided he needed a reminder. Logan was adamant that Misha would treat his mother with the respect due to her. Respect had been the earliest lesson.

"The effort will be appreciated. You know how he is."

"Now I'll sound like I asked my mommy to get me out of trouble with my daddy." He laughed a little. "When he lectures me for my own good, it helps to remember this wasn't something that came natural to him either. If I can be half the man he is, I'll be happy."

Natasha nodded and picked at some french fries.

"Your father is a good man," she said. "He always has been."

He always thought there was a 'but' in there and he never pursued it. That was a can of childhood worms that didn't need to be opened.

"Anyway, I can tell you what he'll say. He'll say to leave me to him, he'll take care of things."

He'd been in the life long enough to know what could happen, but David hadn't and one of Misha's other standing Dad orders was to look after his brother in case the unthinkable happened. Misha had learned a lot from the old man, but until that time came he didn't know if he could best a fighter like Wolverine without actually killing him. There were orders on that as well. Not too many kids would have been drilled by their own parents on the best way to put them down if necessary. Misha didn't think Mom knew about that, but he never could tell.

"We have to joke about it. Otherwise we'd obsess about it and that's never good."

"I know," she said. Sometimes she wondered how people in the life stayed sane when they knew all the possible bad stuff that could happen. Then again, they all had to be a little insane to do what they did in the first place.

"What do you think about the registration bill noise running around?" he asked abruptly. The professor talked about it, but Misha only half listened in the past. He was paying more attention since their encounter the previous fall.
