Dinner
Natasha skipped reservations and went for a place that was more casual. One of their favorite places was Big Nick's and it was the perfect place for a casual dinner for mother and son. She sent him a text with the time and a message to meet a big Nick's. She was in the mood for a burger anyway and Big Nick's had great burgers.

She left a note for Tony and James to let them know where she was. Since telling Tony about her pregnancy, he had been overprotective and almost as bad as a mother hen.

She arrived early of course and grabbed a booth. Water was brought to the table and she passed the time by sipping it.

	Natasha shook her head. Her kid would never be the type to open up and why would he start now? "I'm not going to tell you how to feel, Misha. I want to know how you feel about this. His permanent orders were to do whatever she asked or answer to Dad. Upset Mom and he answered to Dad. It wasn't an argument he could win and he wanted to be a good son.

"I guess it's a good thing this one will start out legitimate. Does this mean your retirement is permanent now so you're here full time for this one?"

One year for him. Four for Anya. Third time's supposed to be the charm, right?

	She wasn't going to lie to him. She never had and she wouldn't start now. "I don't know. As it looks right now, yes I will be around. But we both know that could change." She was cute when she was trying to be fair across the board. Totally in denial about some things. He still loved her even when he had to be the reasonable one.

"Mom, you think of it that way, but this is the real world, and Stark is the name that counts. The rest of us are still baggage. Admittedly not your run-of-the-mill beat-up gym bags, but still not at Stark level. When the requests for interviews and pictures come in, it won't be for seven people. It'll be for the happy Stark family unit. That's how it works. Eliza's busy, James is oblivious, and I'm used to it. Don't worry. Enjoy this pregnancy. You have everything you want this time."

"You are not baggage and never will be," she said none too gently. "You, Eliza and James." She loved them all equally, even if two of them were technically not hers.

She sighed a little. She'd never change his mind about how he fit into her life or what he meant to her. It felt like she was fighting a losing battle half of the time. The only thing she ever wanted was for her kids to be happy. Everything after that was icing on the cake.

"There's a ballet next week and I remember someone offering to take me," she said.

"Mom," he said gently, "it's enough you don't think of it like that. What everyone else thinks doesn't matter." He squeezed her hand again, then lifted it to kiss her knuckles. "I'm trying to reassure you and failing, huh? Dad'll have my hide nailed to the Danger Room wall for upsetting you. There have been plenty of times in the last two years that you could've lost me, and you didn't. Doesn't that tell you something?"

"'Fraid you don't get a say in it, darlin'," he said and winked. "If you want me to be fine with everything, you need to let me work through it my way. If that includes treating you like you're a little bit fragile, you'll just have to put up with it." Blackmail was a family tradition.

He kissed her knuckles again and set her hand back on the table. "I'll be there to take you to the ballet. I'll even shave."

	She dressed him well, he had to admit. When he had to be somewhere scrubbed and presentable, he made a good showing. Best of all, she somehow refrained from replacing his old jeans and tee shirts.
