After the Storm
The Marauders are gone. At least for now. They still haven't determined what that was all about, and right now, Lucas doesn't care. He's been hard at work ever since the attack, despite his own psychological scars, healing who he can. When the medical labs, Hank McCoy, and the other healer assured him they had things under control, he went to talk to Scott, and got permission to do the hardest task yet.
He sighs, setting down the pencil and reviewing the letter.

Moira, after helping out for some time with claenup, found him.

"Is that for Laurie's mother?"

Dear Ms. Jenkins,

There is no easy way to deliver tragic news, so I'll be direct. Your daughter, Laurie Jenkins, was tragically killed in a horrific terrorist attack upon Xavier's School for the Gifted. As some of the victims are still comatose and unstable, we do not know what the final toll from the attack will be, but the loss of even a single life is far more than any of us, and especially the families should have to bear. With so much of the faculty and others injured or worse, I have volunteered to take on the sad duty of passing on the news.
I know in the near future there will be a lot of questions. Was there anything any of us could have done to prevent this tragedy from happening? Why Laurie? Who could have been so callous as to have killed a child? I do not have all the answers, but will do my very best to answer some of the questions that follow a tragedy. There were security measures. The terrorists who did this were sophisticated and their actions pre-meditated. They removed all security measures and disabled the people best suited to protecting others or stopping their actions. In the wake of these times, I wish we could have done more for the security of everyone harmed, but as a school first, I still question what we might have done that would not have compromised the attempts at openness to people who have nowhere else to go, like Laurie, upon discovering her mutant gifts. We do not know if she was intentionally targeted, or in the wrong place. The breadth of the attacks ensured there was nowhere safe, however. And I promise you, we are doing everything in our abilities to bring the attackers to justice, though I know all such efforts come too late to be any comfort.
Your daughter was shy, but in recent times I believe she had begun to find a home at Xavier's, and some happiness. She and her roommate had become quite close, only recently, she had come out of her shell enough to volunteer for the welcoming committee for new prospective students. She was learning to accept her gifts, and her recent efforts in classes and commentary to friends suggested she was considering trying to eventually join the X-Men, and dedicate herself to helping children like her who were lost and confused, with few options, in a world where sometimes just being a teen is hard enough, and being a mutant teen adds an impossible layer of difficulty.
In a way, hard as it is to see or accept now, she succeeded. As impossible as it must be to be "the" parent who has to hear the news no parent should ever have to face, I hope it may be some comfort, eventually, that had it not been your daughter who faced down one of the terrorists, it would have been another child. There is no question in my mind that she saved at least one life, and we cannot be certain how many others. There is no fairness in a child dying before her time, but in my mind, and others, she died bravely, and a hero, and among friends who loved her.
Ms. Jenkins, my name is Lucas Moonstar. I am a student at Xavier's school. I asked the remaining faculty for permission to be the one to deliver the news, in the wake of a tragedy we are all still reeling from. I have also asked for permission to fly to your hometown to deliver your daughter's effects, and spend a few days there helping you in any way I can to understand what has happened, answer any questions I possibly can, and to assist with putting things in order, as well as bringing your daughter's personal effects home. I wanted to make sure this was acceptable to you before taking the trip, and wanted to know if her roommate might be permitted to join me. No other student here was as close to your daughter as Lilly Daniels, your daughter's roommate, and I'm certain she would wish to help out, and get to know the woman who gave her the gift of getting to know your daughter.
Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss, on behalf of myself and everyone at Xavier's. Nothing can possibly approach the loss you must feel, but know that she was loved dearly here, and everyone is feeling the loss of one of our own. Please let me know if myself, and possibly Lilly would be able to visit to help in any way we can, and tell me if there is anything I can possibly do for you.

With sadness,
Lucas Moonstar

Moira read carefully. " 'Tis...thorough." Because 'good' couldn't possibly apply to anything in this situation.

He knows he's normally not the most welcome person around here, but right now, they all need information, they need extra hands, and they need to pull together.
Andrew sticks around the school, helping as long as there's something he can do, then heading for the library to wait til someone has time to talk, so he might be able to learn more, and see if there's anything else they can do.

Bedside vigil

Cait was in the medlab in a chair next to Rufus' bed. She should be a bed herself, but she had to sit with Rufus. He was in a coma because he had tried to come to her rescue. A vigil by his bedside was the least she could do.

Her injured hand was wrapped in a bandage. She still had to have her toes and chest looked at, but for now she could wait until after the more critically wounded could be seen to. Frostbite wasn't life threatening.

She had already called her parents to let them know what had happened and about Rufus. They had run out the door before they had gotten off the phone with Cait.

She held one of Rufus' hands with her good hand and she prayed to the gods that he would wake up.

"Cait!" The chain of events from picking up the phone to screaming for Lyta to screaming for Irina to running into the...heavily ransacked-looking medlab was exceptionally short.

"Gods, Cait, I ... I..."

Cait was out of the chair and had her arms around Corey in a tight hug. "I know, Twerp," she said. She was careful not to let him see her bandaged hand. The chest and toes she didn't have to worry about him seeing.

"How... I mean, is he.... What do they say?"

It's going to take him a while to realize that she's keeping one hand out of sight.

It wasn't until after putting out the fire and once people were finally talking about the fight that Sylvie thought to ask about Vicki.

And found that she'd been last seen heading for her room.

"Oh, god"

Yes, she'd been distracted by the fire, but if Sylvie had failed to stop that girl and she'd killed Vicki... how could she not have? Vicki was no fighter....

Sylvie made her way upstairs as quickly as possible.

Viki's room is smeared with blood and less identifiable stains. All the cages are open. A couple of mice cower at the back of their cages, the metal rattling a little with their shaking, the noise adding an additional eerie tone to the dark room. At least three cages are empty. One looks like it held some kind of bird, from the mess of feathers left. Two were with the rodents, rats or guinea pigs or something.
The puppy is completely frantic, unhurt, but barking up a storm at anything that moves, definitely more on edge and hostile than usual. Before anything can be done in further examination, it has to be forcibly removed from the room. There's no calming it at the moment.
The bloody trail from there, almost like tracks as if Talitha was walking on hands and feet by that point, leads to the closet, where a dark smear marks the doorknob. Its slightly ajar.

Inside, at first, it appears to be the worst. Viki is inside, there's blood and other stains on her clothing and a terrible smell. She's very, very still, huddled in a corner.

Whenever Sylvie can bring herself to check any closer, she's not only alive, but entirely unhurt. But she's totally non-responsive, aside from twitching whenever she's touched, and staring blankly if her eyes are opened.

Sylvie, once she has eventually ascertained this, will crawl to the window and shout for somebody to come who can carry her.

She looks around at the blood, the feathers. Sylvie figures Vicki must have talked to her, somehow, instinctively. Because what had come through here was definitely an animal.

He recognized the voice and then looked to see Lyta. Unfortunately, she had to see him. His wings were held out away from the rest of his body, which was heavily bandaged due to the burns and stab wound, and the cuts. His wings were recovering, but they looked a huge mess - most of the feathers were gone, and the rest were molting so new ones could grow in.

"Come on in, Lyta."

"Hey, Shrimp," she said, quietly.

But Molly can help with the clean-up all the same. She's solemn, as she went about picking up debris in the living room.

Ezekiel had cried for a while over the students who got hurt and who died. Then he began to get food set up for the students who where still alive. He knew that they would get hungry so he took charge and started cooking.

His leg kept bothering him from the stress of knowing people were hurt or dead. But this is his way of helping. He will be making rounds with food to make sure everyone is taking care of themselves.

When Aaron finally woke up he found himself in the medlab. He had a massive headache, a sore side and felt like he had been hit in the head multiple times. The last thing Aaron remembered was being in his room reading so needless to say he was very confused as to what happened to him and how he got there.
