The Decisions We Make

Some decisions were just too hard to make.  Zachary stood in front of the man who committed the crime.  "They were just little kids!" he shouted at the man who cowered int he wake of the .357 Desert Eagle held at his forehead.  Zak was the one holding the gun.

"I-I'm sorry!"

"Sorry?!  Sorry doesn't bring them back, you son of a bitch!"

He pistol whipped the man to the ground, and then continued to point the gun at the man's face.  The bodies of the kids littered the ground, and blood make the concrete impossible to see.  All that Zak could see was red, death, and the man on the opposite end of his gun.

"What if he doesn't? What if he repents and finds religion, tries to become something better? Those happen too, and somehow no one ever takes credit for giving them a second chance. If he does it again, it will be his hand on the gun, not yours. But either way, are you also going to take the credit for every kid who guns someone down who might have seen what you did here? Are you going to take credit for it if you kill him, and his family or his gang comes after someone you care about?"

He was silent for a moment, trying to think of a response to justify his intentions. But he couldn't think of anything. So he fired off all eight rounds in the magazine of his gun, missing the cowering man below him with each shot.

"I can't find an answer to those questions."

He puts a hand on Zak's shoulder.
"Because there is no good answer. If it was that easy, the world wouldn't face such hard choices. The best thing you can do, at the end of the day, is be the best person you can and be someone you can live with. However, for the moment, I believe the words you're looking for for your terrified man there is, 'this is a citizen's arrest.' You can still see it through to the end for the moment and get some resolution, you know."

"You're right," he replied to Lucas. And Zak stepped forward and picked the guy up off the ground by his collar. "This is a citizen's arrest, you lucky son of a bitch."

Lucas steps back, beginning to fade from the dream. Zak still gets to be the hero, still gets some resolution - the energy drain is fading from the dream.
Its not over - this is always a hard question, but at least now there's another option. Hopefully it'll make it easier next time.
