A Fish out of Water
"Wow! Mommy can I talk to the horse-man?" The voice had come from a little girl, doubtless less than a decade old.

"I don't think so honey. I think he wants to be by himself."

The child's mother was wise. Bill practically radiated a sense of loneliness. Well that and anger, despair and a healthy dose of self-loathing. Bill was seated, barely as the small chair chair struggled to contain his bulk even in his "standard" form, at a local cafe. At first he had gotten quite a few looks, but he had been fortunate in that one of the waitresses recognized him as someone eho had helped Thor.

'This is not my planet. These are not my people. They're both gone.' This mantra had gone through his head constantly since he had returned to Earth.

Bill was currently nursing his fifth couple of coffee. The gold coin, he picked it up during one of his forays into Asgard, had bought him several cups of the brew. It wasn't bad really, but he imagined it wasn't strong enough to really effect him. He was currently expecting the arrival of a friend. Someone who was also leaving among a people not her own.

Sif had been surprised to receive the message. She didn't know many on Migard and the ones she did know, she now lived with most of them. Though this message had come from an old friend. One she was eager to see again.

Sif walked to the cafe since she didn't know how to drive and she really didn't care for the moving metal boxes people used for transportation. Sif got looks as she walked down the streets, but it was New York so there weren't that many stares. She was in her normal outfit with her sword strapped at her waist. New York had seen worse.

She reached the cafe and entered, looking around for the familiar face. Her mouth pulled into a smile when she saw Bill.

"Well met, mine friend," she said as she sat down in a chair across from him.

Sif's arrival brought an all too rare smile to Bill's face.

"Well met, Lady Sif. It is very good to see you. How fares Thor?"

"It ist a pleasure to see thee, Bill. My Lord Thor ist well and wouldst be pleased to see thee again."

Sif ordered a cup of coffee when the waitress came over to the table.

"I would like that as well. There is little left that is familiar to me." Bill considered his coffee, before speaking. "Not a bad beverage. In truth though I am only drinking this so that I don't wander to the nearest tavern. I wouldn't want to consider the results of such an excursion."

Sif nodded. "Aye it ist better to be prudent," Sif said. "Migard ist always strange no matter how many times I doth visit here. Thou shouldst come back with me. Thor wouldst be o'erjoyed to see thee."

Bill is silent, eerily so. When he speaks it is solemn.

"They're gone, Sif. My people are gone. I neglected my duty..and they paid the price."

"That..that is a kind offer, Lady. However, I fear it was my preoccupation with Asgard, Thor..you, that caused this travesty. My whole life I had but one purpose, to defend my species. When Surtur was bested, I felt perhaps..I could so something for myself."

Bill laid his cup down, lest he crush it to pieces.

"And I did, fighting at yours and Thor's side to defend Asgard were among the happiest of my life. For they were battles I could participate in without the expectations of my people constantly besetting me. They warned me you know. My people told me I spent too much time amongst the gods of Asgard. Yet I did not heed them."

"There hast to be survivors out there," Sif said. "Surely thou canst be the last of thine kind. We wilt help thee if thou wilt allow us. It ist the least we canst do for all thou hath done for Asgard."

For a moment Bill's coutenance changes, containing a flicker of hope. However, the spark dims as Bill answers. "I would not want to take you and Thor away from your duties here." It was a half truth. Bill didn't want to admit to himself the other reason.

Bill almost felt like weeping, an act that he had not comitted since the deswtruction of his home. He wasn't alone. He composed himself, it wouldn't do for a proud warrior to weep like a babe after all.

"Very well, Sif. I graciously accept your offer."

"The truth is..I fear one of two things. The first..that I truly am the last of my kind. The second," Bill really wishes he had some ale or even human beer at this point. "that they're are survivors. I fear looking them in the eye and trying to justify why I wasn't there."

Bill had taken to studying the tablecloth, not able to look Sif in the eye while admitting his shame.

Bill rises from his chair, which audibly creaks from the weight lifted off of it.

"I could use Stormbreker to get us there quickly, though that may cause a few bit of commotion. That and," Bill looked sheepish a moment. "I have nary an idea of where you reside."

"Thank you, my friend. You honor me greatly. I have not been back long, but from what little I have heard the Earth has experienced it's own brand of tragedies." Bill felt another pang of guilt. He had not been there for his people or during Earth's dark times.

"Is it true that Midgard's champions warred with on another? And that a madman usurped control of them?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]thundergod

"Aye... but they let the madman in the door. Allied with him, knowing his past. One mayst always trust a villain to be a villain... but most of those I thought I couldst trust to stand as heroes in mine absence... instead betrayed their legacy, and the trust of those they once guarded. Betrayed one another... and in the midst, allied themselves with a craven, false image of the God of Thunder."

"False image?" Bill thought a moment. While his people had a more, as humans would call it, "medieval mindset", his people had been more advanced technologically. It took him a moment to put two and two together. "They cloned you!?"

The tone in Bill's voice was one of rage. His people had once considered the practice as a means of bolstering their forces against Surtur's hordes, but in the end abandoned the idea when they felt it took too much away from the individual self. Bill was nearly pacing in agitation.

"Why do you continue to stay with them!?"

"Believe me, mine friend, Thine anger at such a travesty, not only the cloning... but then saying that its actions represented the will of Thor... mirrors mine own. But I hath doubted Steve Rogers once... and he proved worthy of mine deepest respect, e'en then.

This world needs its guardians, mayhap now more than e'er. And he yet believes the Avengers canst be those guardians. Tis no longer the august brotherhood it wast once... but still, with the right guidance, mayhap this company canst be Earth's Mightiest once more.

E'en so, the only ones I trust fully art the Captain and the son of Zeus."

Bill takes a deep breath before answering.

"I apologize, my friend. As I have said, my state of mind is..fragie as of late. I do not doubt your judgement. It's just..I've seen enough tragedies of late. So you mean to help the Avengers regain their soul?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Mine friend... thou hast naught to apologize for. Had it been any other man besides Steve Rogers who asked this of me, mine answer wouldst hath been no... and I wouldst hath departed their company to watch from on high. Just as thou hath faith in my judgement, I hath placed mine faith in his. If the soul of the Avengers ist to be saved, t'will be by his leadership, faith and guidance. I wilt but lend mine strength and mine eye to the service of mine truest friend amongst these mortals."

"I understand. This is an important duty you undertake." Bill couldn't in good conscious pull Thor from a debt owed to a friend he had known longer than himself. Bill briefly turned to Sif before looking back at Thor. "I cannot ask you to leave here when it is clear there will be much to do."

"Nay, my friend. If there ist aught we can help thee with, it shalt be thine. Whilst there ist much to do here, that mayst be done in time, and Rogers ist yet here. All of Asgard owes thee... and moreover, thou'rt one of the few Thor calls a true friend. What wouldst thou seek aid with?"

[info]iamnotahorse
2011-04-26 01:28 am UTC (link)
Bill let out a sigh. Even though Thor had given his assurances, Bill was still not completely comfortable asking this.

"In my melancholic state, the Lady Sif reminded me of the possibility that some of my people may have succeeded in fleeing the Devourer's destruction of my world. She suggested that the two of you could assist me in looking for survivors. A task I would do myself since it is my responsibility, but..I would value your aid."

And in a blink that hint of decisiveness fled Bill's spirit. The destruction of his world left a lot of emotional scars upon Bill. One of the aftereffects was his trust in his own judgement.

"I..whenever you would feel it best." Bill attempted to sound calm, though he doubted he'd surpressed all of his newfound insecurities. That was not a conversation he wanted to get into. Not just yet anyway.
