Comes With the Membership Card
Being an Avenger had its upsides and downsides. One upside? Swanky membership card with built-in communications hardware. On the other hand, you have things like Kang. Ultron. Loki. Also, the swanky membership card comes with the expectation that when the call goes out, you answer.

Spider-Man's been called in by the one and only Captain America for a briefing on a high priority mission that requires his particular talents and knowledge - which feels a little like Eddie Van Halen asking you to sit in on guitar. After passing through the requisite battery of scans and security checks, he makes his way inside.

"Yoo hoo, door-to-door arachnid delivery service, anyone home?"

"Okay, that looked like a really large Zebra giving birth to a human baby. Ugh."

Spider-Man shudders at the mental image, then continues.

"America wants you, Eddie. Captain America, that is. He's got a new team in mind with a specific mission, and he'd like to recruit you to be on it."

Brock ignored Parker's pun. It was what he said afterward that got his attention.

"Captain America wants ME on a team?" Eddie had a lot of respect for the man. They had even worked together before during Carnage's killing spree years ago. "For what? And I say again, why me?"

"It's going to be a stealthy team, working from the shadows a lot of the time. Black Widow will be the field leader. I imagine that a guy with strength, agility, and enhanced mobility who doesn't wear a bright red and blue costume would be an asset to a team like that."

Eddie had to admit he would be good at something like that. He knew the Widow only br reputation, but it was a formidable one. Plus, Brock wasn't naive about what kept the word safe. A black ops team of costumed operatives made sense.

"I see," Brock said mulling it over. He imagined he could do more good on such a team. He had A LOT to make up for. Plus you knew with Captain America that you were on the right side. Still, he didn't like the idea of leaving the dealers to their devices. "If I do this, will you keep an eye on things around here?"

"Well, I don't think this is going to take up all of your time, Eddie - I'm an Avenger in good standing myself, and I find plenty of time to bust muggers, drug dealers, and the other street scum. But yeah, if you find yourself unable to fulfill your duties as Miss Universe, I'll play runner-up."

He smiles a little under the mask.

"I mean, New York's got about five superheroes per square mile these days anyway, am I right? This'll give you a shot at some big-scale good stuff."

"Always with the jokes." Brock shakes his head a bit. His tone then becomes serious. "I'll do it and not just for Captain America."

Eddie turns to SPider-Man.

"The fact of the matter is I owe you. I've done far too much to you and yours over the years to ever completely make up for. Whether it was the suit or my own warped mind doesn't really matter. I owe you penance, and I've been ignoring that fact. No more, whatever it takes, I will try and make things right between us. I promise."

Eddie extends his hand, as he does the suit reforms around his head, the mouth formed in a twisted smile. "Doesn't mean I like you, of course."

This still feels weird to Peter, but hell - cutting people second chances is the right thing to do. He takes the offered hand and gives it a firm shake.

"Well, that just means you're qualified to be editor of the Daily Bugle. Try not to let it go to your haircut."

"I'm in danger of a lot of things. That's not one of them. Lead the way, wall-crawler."
