Nearly done and we still haven't started...(Open to X-Men)
Scott Summers looked down at the stacks of paperwork and information on his desk with a critical eye. Trade agreements, delivery manifests and personnel reports were among the top things that he needed to find time to deal with. He also had to schedule time to talk to everyone in the various areas of Utopia on the progress of rebuilding from Bastion's attack. His people, both the X-Men and mutants in general, have been through so much recently that it was wonder they hadn't broken yet. Of course, there were many that did.

The Church of Purity denounced Utopia at every turn, along with media pundits and politicians from both political parties. For every person that stood up in defense of mutantkind, it seemed that five more were hell-bent on seeing them truly become extinct.

Luckily, the X-Men have hope...and Hope.

Scott believes the girl will save mutantkind, given the proper time and training. He doesn't know how or when it will happen, despite the number of possible futures he's aware of. Nathan taught her well, and it was up to Scott and the X-Men to continue that training. But above all, it was on them to keep her safe.

Leading back to the paperwork on his desk. Hungry people didn't fight well, nor did people didn't have enouh water for showering and drinking. They needed more resources to sustain themselves and Scott wasn't sure where they'd come from, he'd secure them however he had to.

His people expected and deserved nothing less.

Then we'll watch and wait. If it has to be addressed...then we'll do it. Scott says, looking out into the distance.

After everything Nathan did to protect Hope, to keep her alive, Scott hoped that he hadn't been wrong about it. That he hadn't been wrong about sending his son to his death.

Nathan's death was so frequent a thought that Emma no longer had to even listen much to what Scott was thinking to know.

You need to stop blaming yourself, Scott.

I can't. I sent him to die and Hope is right to hate me for it. /I/ hate me for it. There are a lot of things I didn't say to him that I should have said.

Scott runs those last days and moments over in his head, ordering Nathan and X-Force to go to the future and shut down Bastion's link to the Sentinels. Scott had known what it would take to end the battle, the number of lives that it would cost. He'd known that his son wouldn't come back as he had so many times in the past from his sojourns to the future.

And he'd ordered him to go anyway, knowing that none of them would come back.

And then they /did/ come back, but Nathan sacrificed himself to make it happen.

Have you stopped blaming yourself for the Hellions, Emma? Scott asks sadly.

The hand that held Scott's suddenly gripped tighter and felt colder. It had started to switch to diamond, though it was fleeting and went right back to flesh.

You didn't send him to die. You sent him to save countless lives and I believe he was well aware of that. There is an idea that heroes are heroes because they put the greater good before their own. If Nathan hadn't felt the mission was what had to be done he simply wouldn't have gone.

There was a cold silence for a few moments.

Truth is, Scott, sometimes I can't even recall their faces anymore. It's progressed beyond guilt and blame for me to someplace far darker and it's a place I'd like to spare you from.

In his mind, Scott knows Emma is right. In his heart, however, the words don't change a thing.

When can we get started on bringing the supplies here? he asks, slipping the mantle of command into place like its own set of armor.

Thank you, Emma. he says, keeping hold of her hand.

Their own personal armors sliding into place, blocking each other out as much as they pull together this was something Emma was used to. It was familiar and in that there was comfort and certainly no secrets.

The first shipment will arrive later this afternoon. I went ahead and made arrangements. We needed things. Needs cannot wait.

I love you.

I love you, too.

He doesn't need to say much else, because she /knows/. He can't vocalize it, and it would cost him a bit more than he can afford to do so now. He can't show weakness among the others, not even the ones who are his friends.

We're going to win this.

This...Utopia. The life. It was no longer the dream. It was a struggle, a battle, a war. She squeezed his hand.

We will.

Because they didn't have any other choice.

Winding into his consciousness, Emma kissed him softly even as she physically simply stood beside him.

"Come. You need to get back to the business of things and I need to go keep Pixie from prodding too much at a madman."

With a slight smile she let go of his hand and took a few steps from him.

"If you aren't home tonight, I will come after you. Consider yourself warned."

"Duly noted, Emma." Scott says, offering her his first smile of the day.

"I'll try to make it home on time." he says.
