Nearly done and we still haven't started...(Open to X-Men)
Scott Summers looked down at the stacks of paperwork and information on his desk with a critical eye. Trade agreements, delivery manifests and personnel reports were among the top things that he needed to find time to deal with. He also had to schedule time to talk to everyone in the various areas of Utopia on the progress of rebuilding from Bastion's attack. His people, both the X-Men and mutants in general, have been through so much recently that it was wonder they hadn't broken yet. Of course, there were many that did.

The Church of Purity denounced Utopia at every turn, along with media pundits and politicians from both political parties. For every person that stood up in defense of mutantkind, it seemed that five more were hell-bent on seeing them truly become extinct.

Luckily, the X-Men have hope...and Hope.

Scott believes the girl will save mutantkind, given the proper time and training. He doesn't know how or when it will happen, despite the number of possible futures he's aware of. Nathan taught her well, and it was up to Scott and the X-Men to continue that training. But above all, it was on them to keep her safe.

Leading back to the paperwork on his desk. Hungry people didn't fight well, nor did people didn't have enouh water for showering and drinking. They needed more resources to sustain themselves and Scott wasn't sure where they'd come from, he'd secure them however he had to.

His people expected and deserved nothing less.

One more step on the road of good intentions? Perhaps. With the future of mutantkind so endangered, did it call for the putting aside of old animosities in order to save them all?

Hank wondered...

Rogue hasn't come into the room but with Magneto here, well, she was bound to show up in the area, wasn't she? Things never get simpler, do they? It is always interesting, that much is true.

She'll wait and see about going in.

For now.

"Erik, Exodus, we'll have a few of the younger X-Men show give you a tour and escort you to your rooms. If either of you need to discuss anything with me, let me know." Cyclops says, considering this portion of the discussion finished.

He knew the real discussion was about to begin shortly.

"Of course." They would need to debate and argue over his being here but he knew Scott's stubborness would keep his decision as it was. He could give them the space without any grudge at the moment.

"And I know there are things we could help with here. When you are ready let us know so we can help." He stood up knowing Exodus would follow him and went to leave the room. He had no doubt they would arrange for someone to meet him before he got too far.

And he does, indeed, follow directly.

Hank counted to ten after Magneto and Exodus had left.

"...Well, Scott?"

Scott figured that the first question would be from Hank. Hank was drifting further and further away from the team on various issues. Scott hated it, but it was what it was.

"It was the best decision I could make at the present time, Hank, given everything we've all been through." Scott says, staring straight ahead.

"Nuclear terrorism, domestic terrorism, attempting to rewrite the Earth's magnetic field. Playing god with the Savage Land peoples. Nearly causing World War III with Russia. Having tried to kill us since we were sixteen."

Hank ticked off the points on his fingers. "Scott, you quit the X-Men because you didn't like Charles leaving him in charge of the Institute. Do I really need to go on here?"

"Hank, I haven't forgotten a single thing you ticked off. Not to mention a few others you left out. Would I /like/ to believe Magneto has changed? Yes. Do I? Not especially, especially with Exodus in tow." Scott says, taking a deep breath.

"However, the options before us are to turn away two of the most powerful mutants on the planet and leave them to their own devices somewhere we /can't/ see them. Then we'll be fighting a mutant Civil War that wipes us all out.

Or, we can have them here where we can see them and figure out if their motives are as pure as they claim. If so, then great.

If not, then we're in a good position to shut down whatever they're really planning, Hank." Scott says.

"And with mutantkind still facing extinction, we've got to pull together. Back then, I had the safety of youthful idealism to fall back on. Safe to say, we're all older and wiser to how the world works." Scott says.

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer," Emma spoke up, rising from her seat. "I believe that was the phrase some of you used when rationalizing why you kept me around initially--and if I'm not mistaken it's still a prevailing thought."

A wry smile crossed her lips as she looked at each person still in the room in turn.

"Scott's right. Keeping those two up close will at the very least buy us precious seconds in stopping them on one of their ridiculous quests for global domination, but even more so it is politically stupid for us to claim that we are for all mutants and turn two of the largest symbols away. And while I think Magneto would be mature enough to handle a 'we do not trust you' conversation, his bitchy little lapdog is another story entirely. We need them here. Both for safety and for the mission."

Hank pushed his own chair back, rising, and placing his furry paws on the table. "And when the rest of the world comes after us, for harboring known terrorists? The world still believes Magneto responsible for Xorn's atrocities in New York."

He let out a breath. "I don't like this. At all. I want that on the record. But I'm willing to abide by this, for now. I don't trust them. But if this is what is necessary..."

And I'm not sure how much I still trust you, Scott.

"The United States is going to have to think long and hard about that, considering that two different branches of their government have tried to wipe out mutantkind in recent times, with Osborn followed by Bastion." Scott says, thinking things over.

"Right now, we need to focus on survival and making sure we get through another day. If people want to make an issue over Magneto and Exodus later, then we'll deal with it then." Scott tells him.

He knows he's losing Hank on this, but damn it if he didn't see another way out of this that didn't result in something worse happening down the line.

Logan trusted no one...much...anymore. "He's plannin' somethin' that we're gonna be sorry about. He's never been straight an' he's playin' you like he did Xavier."

"The difference being that Magneto hasn't been my friend for years on end. Should it come down to it, we'll do what we have to to stop him." Scott says, rising from his chair.

The walls were starting to close in. He needed a little space.

"Any one needs me, I'll be out walking around." Scott says.

Would you like some company?

Emma looks at the others, but says nothing. There is nothing left to add.

No. I just need a few minutes to sort out my thoughts.

He leaves the room and goes to look out over the water.
